Medical Conditions & Diseases / Happy New Year!
« on: January 01, 2007, 02:22:17 pm »
Happy New Year from Georgi and my dog Joey, who has been seizure free since Dec. 22nd after going on Phenobarb for his newly diagnosed epilepsy. He seems a little bit drowsy sometimes on the Phenobarb but on the whole, still my same, goofy Joey. Blessings to everyone and thank you for your continued friendship and support!

I am so sorry you have to deal with all of this at Christmas time...even if you don't celebrate. It must be so hard on all of you. My husband and I just placed his Mom with dimentia in a Nursing Home in Nov. We go up and visit her tomorrow. I know the stress of illness in extended family. My thoughts and good wishes go out to you and yours.

I cannot say thank you enough for your support. I just need to feel sad for a while. I will get past it...I just never imagined or wanted this for my beautiful Joey.

I rescued him from a foster home when he was five months old. He was a goofy looking puppy with a nose that seemed too big for his face. I fell in love with him right away. He was a little brat and still is but his cleverness just endears him to me and my family because he is full of fun. Here is the cutest pic of him when I brought him home. Enoy!

I gave Joey his first dose of Phenobarbital this morning. He has to take it twice a day. I should start seeing a reduction of seizures in two weeks. He didn't have any seizures last night...I'm relieved!  :)...I'm just going to take it one day at a time for now and sleep on the couch so I can be near to him. I hope this treatment works and that I don't have to add another drug.

Happy Birthday from K-9 "Joey" and Georgi. Joey turned two this year as well, in October. I don't think I will ever stop calling him "puppy" or "puppy wuppy"! Happy Birthday Sasha, you're beautiful!

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Re: Thomas, my cat, is dying (long)
« on: December 21, 2006, 04:52:29 am »
I'm so sorry about your Thomas, it must be very difficult to see him suffering. It is agonizing how pets most often will come to you to "make it better". However, I'm sure he feels the energy of ALL your love. I will send a prayer up for you and Thomas.

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Re: Joey has epilepsy...2nd update...long.
« on: December 21, 2006, 01:17:41 am »
Thank-you Cindy for sharing your post and to everyone else as well for your kind support. As I mentioned, I have just been waiting on pins and needles for another seizure since Monday when I took Joey to the Vet. He checked out okay physically but his blood/urine work came back elevated lypase which can indicate pancreatis but we already know Joey is prone to a sensitive stomach and I already have him on low fat, high quality kibble. So nothing came up that would indicate seizures.

Anyway, last night I was sitting up late and I heard a loud bang and I ran to find Joey in a writhing convulsion, emitting an erie sound from his throat, foaming at the mouth. It feels like a tradgedy to me. I see it with my son, 17 now, 10 yrs with complex partial seizures, and now my big furry lovely puppy, who I waited so long to get, the "big guy", who helps me cope, lifts my spirits, keeps me exercised and who loves to be adored,... and adores me...wow :',( this is hard. )

The long and short of it is that I called the vet this morning and I have to start him on phenobarbital and rectal valium if neccessary for longer seizures. In two to three weeks I get his blood levels checked and we go from there. She said some dogs need to take more than one drug and his seizures should start responding to the drug therapy in a couple of weeks.

Please send your good thoughts Joey's way and to anyone that is suffering with sick pets, my thoughts are with you too.

Sincerely, Georgi

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Update on Joey
« on: December 19, 2006, 01:30:56 am »
:)Thank you everybody for ALL your support. It means so very much to me and my spirit feels lifted. The Vet called my this morning with some test results. Joey's lipase enzyme is elevated but thats about all they can see. This can mean a predipostion to pancreatis but I am already aware that Joey has a sensitive stomach...he burps all the time and I always have to make sure he has some food in his dish so his stomach doesn't get too empty. She said we will just wait to see if he has more seizures as they don't like to medicate until it is absolutely neccessary. Excluding the two seizures he had yesterday, two seizures in a 4-6 week period would mean medication for Joey, so it is a "wait and see kind of a thing", to see if he has any more. The vet also told me that seizures are more likely in BIG DOGS. So...I'll wait and watch. Thanks again everyone! You really are the best,
Georgi

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Joey has epilepsy
« on: December 18, 2006, 11:12:02 pm »
:( I just found out that Joey has epilepsy. We were awoken yesterday morning (5 am ), by a loud thumping on the deck by my 2 year old Pyr/Kuvasz cross. We found him frothed at the mouth, having lost bodily functions and just coming out of a seizure dazed and confused. 2 hours later he had another...I saw him go down. It was agonizing. I took Joey to the vet at 9 am. They have ordered blood work and examined him. The vet can't see anything physically wrong so it may be idiopathic, (no known reason). We will see if blood and urine tests pick up anything today. Apparently, if a dog has 4 or so seizures a year, they are not medicated, but if they have them monthly, they do medicate. I have realized since he had his two seizures yesterday, that there have been two others in the last month, ( I witnessed and was confused by a couple of accidents he had, and the fishy way he smelled especially around his furry mane, (gastric juices and saliva). Now I know. It also explains some dazed behavior. This is so very sad...and also bizarre, as I have a son with epilepsy that I have to have a "hawk-eye" for. Heartbreaking for me and my big Joey. I just wanted to share, and is there any one out there who has a dog with epilepsy?

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Hello after a long absense!
« on: November 16, 2006, 12:16:12 am »
Hello everybody!

Joey and I have been away since the summer. Too much to get into but two personal tragedies, way too busy and too much stress taking care of one of my husbands aging parents due to dimentia, not to mention rowing our own boat. Wow, it's been quite a ride these past few months. At times I didn't know if I would survive it. I'm still nursing my ulcer!

Anyway, here I am, smelling the roses. Through it all, I walked my big Joey, sometimes with my MP3 player, sometimes without...thro ugh the lovely forest park. Joey licks my face when I cry and helps keeps me sane and laughing with his goofy nature. He keeps a close eye on me my big furry buddy. I feel lucky to have him.

Joey turned two while I've been away-Oct 22. Happy birthday to Joey! I had him proffessionall y groomed for the first time last weekend. I could'nt believe how soft he felt, the white on his fur was whiter, his feet looked so pretty, and best of all, the knots I had been trying to get out of his tail were gone! Now I have to keep them out! My country dog cleaned up really nice...what a beauty! :o

A couple days later, while I had Joey in the car with me on a visit to the pet store, a woman who had been following behind me, also on her way to the pet store, remarked when she got out of her vehicle, " that is the cutest most fluffiest dog I have ever seen!" ;D . I just laughed and said that he had just been groomed! ;D

There you go. I hope my story made somebody giggle...and I'll stop boasting now ;)
