Saint Bernard General Discussions / Re: Wow, Time Flies!

Awe, Happy belated Birthday Lola! We don't come around much anymore, sorry! Adi just turned one himself (he's still hovering around 100lbs - has been for the last few months). He still have a crush on Lola, but is so afraid of Bubba!

Food Discussion & Information / Re: is it ok to bribe your dog when...
« on: February 06, 2007, 03:40:02 pm »
Adicus seems to be having fits of this himself. It makes jme feel guilty... My thinking is that he must not be working hard enough for his food. I've been trying to tire him out each morning, as he seems to eat better when he's "worked" for it, but that's not always the case... Today we threw the stick until he no longer wanted to run and then just drank water, didn't look at his Innova. And now he's been whining to me, either to go out or cause he's hungry. I don't know. Yesterday he couldn't eat enough...

Boys will be boys... Best of luck to you guys. I am going to keep on the tough love thing and not resort to bribing, just yet.

Saint Bernard Pictures / Mr. Obnoxious
« on: February 02, 2007, 03:31:57 pm »
It's been a while since I've had a chance to visit the board. Adicus, the cats and I moved to Austin (from Milwaukee) the first week of January and I've been working non-stop ever sense. I try to take Adi to the parks whenever I have the time to do it, but he is so full of energy and believe-it-or-not, it's cold here in Texas and I don't have the energy to stay outside for the long walks. He makes me feel like a bad mommy.

Here's a picture of him after an attempt at a long walk - one where he seemingly forgot all his manners, which resulted in having to stop every five feet and make him sit or lay down to calm himself.

Mr. Obnoxious, looking quite keen:

He's 9.5 months now, and I'm guessing just around the 100 mark.

Thanks for the support. I need to get better at ignoring him. I will attribute my short temper to the current circumstances (changing job, moving, la la la). But you both are right... MUST. IGNORE. WHINING.

Adicus does the paw thing too. It hurts people. I can't get him to stop. Every time he does it... I grab his paw and say no. I might have to try the dremel... It sounds like an interested approach!

Thanks.

Found this guy just posted on the Austin Craig's List:

Free to good home! He is a very loving and sweet dog. He needs more attention than we are able to give him. He really needs to be an only dog. He is VERY cuddly, loves hugs, and the closer he is with his people the happier he is! While he needs to be inside to be close with his family, he also likes to have some room to run. He's very good with kids and comes in around 110 lbs. He makes a great bio-blanket to keep you warm during the cold months! He really is a sweet guy and it breaks our hearts to have to let him go. He is fully house broken - no potty accidents, and he NEVER tears anything up.

I look at Adicus and I think he's huge. Others mistake him for a grown adult (though not a Saint Bernard, derrr).... But he's 8 months now and barely 85 lbs!

MACK IS A BEAST! You should be PROUD!

Have you posted/looked on Craig's List? Scanned Copper for a chip? (I didn't see the original posting)

Try not to get too attached for the time being. I would *hate* for the owner to pop up a few weeks from now and break your heart.

HOWEVER - It's awesome that you're able to take in this guy and not shuffle him off to a shelter. If he's found a forever home with your pack, he's a special pup.

Congrats! Every time someone posts something like this, it gets me thinking about just how far or (short) down the line it will be till I have a similar announcement.

I'm sorry to read about Thomas, but glad he's hung on to celebrate the holidays with you. The picture of him sitting is  so cute. Neither of my kits do that!

Stay strong.

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / New, annoying behavior: WHINING.
« on: December 26, 2006, 01:03:11 am »
Adicus (8mo.s now) has started a new, annoying behavior that drives me up the wall. He whines, incessantly. Sometimes its a whimper to let me know he's bored. Other times, if he is trying to get to the cats. Sometimes, to say, hey, I need to go potty. I try not to acknowledge it (unless it's obvious he needs to go potty)... but most of the time, he does get a response out of me. "Stop it, Adi." or "No" or "SHUT UP". While I know these responses aren't necessarily the best ways to curb the behavior, I can't stop it because he is so annoying!

Anyone have any advice?

I'm hoping that our move after the first of January to a much warmer climate will help - in that, I will be more willing to take him on longer walks each morning again. He'll be a more fulfilled dog then...

Don't let him fool you. He loves it... Just not the part where mom pulls out the camera and keep yelling his name to get his attention!

Saint Bernard Pictures / Our first & only winter...
« on: December 10, 2006, 12:49:20 am »
Below are pictures of Adicus in the snow, here in Milwaukee. It's my first winter ever (h*ll, it's not even officially winter yet), and it will be my last for a while. We're moving to Austin the first week of January! I'm a Florida girl (as much as I hate to admit it) and wasn't looking forward to four more months of freezing temps! I would have stayed if they offered me a permanent job, though...

Anyway, I'm getting off topic...

I thought we should do a photoshoot to remember our short stint in the cold. Today was a really warm one (37, feels like 28!), and the sun was shining very nicely. I've learned how to fully appreciate that!

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Re: Tell me about dog parks!
« on: November 22, 2006, 09:42:30 am »
Although I take Adi to a non-affiliated dog park, you should check out milwaukeedogpa rks.org - It's run by the Residents for Off-leash Milwaukee Parks. Supposedly a group from the East Side came together to form the group and they've had success so far. I am sure if you emailed them, they'd let you pick their brains and point you in the right direction on where to start.

The dog park I take Adi to here is in Mequon, a suburb of Mke and a 10 minute car ride. The first time I went, I was totally amazed. Having been only familiar with South Florida dog parks (which are completely fenced in fields, with agility equipment, fountains, and a smaller fenced off area for small ankle-biters), my jaw dropped when I realized that a real nature park had been devoted to the dogs. Katherine Kerney Dog Park is completely fence-free, with a clearing at the  entrance for the dogs to run and play in. It then has a huge trail that goes through the woods, by a stream where all the doggies swim, and many cut-through paths/trails. When it's dry out, the dogs love to take us through the woods off the paths, creating our own. I'll tell you, it was an amazing way to see the fall colors (for the first time - ever! florida=no season but summer!).

Good luck and I hope all of our responses help. Dog parks are great for the pups and for us.

I attached a pic of one of the smaller cut-through paths at our dog park, from when adi was tiny! Summer was in full-bloom.

vaseline under the door handles is the worst. i know because some of my friends pranked me and that was the one part that put me over the edge... so maybe after you transfer apartments!

i would have transferred too, honestly.
