Saint Bernard Pictures / Re: Teddy @ 18 months
« on: June 29, 2007, 02:34:32 am »
WOW! What a looker! He has really grown. Bella turns a year old next month and I'll have to post some pics. I haven't been very good about taking pictures OR posting. Teddy is a doll. I think he's gorgeous. :D

Lyn, I can relate to your frustrations with Lola. Somehow in the first 10 weeks of Bella's life at the Breeders, she was restricted access to food and treats. Luckily she seems ok with water. I wish I knew what went on; if it was the breeder or the other pups. I sadly suspect it had something to do with the breeder allowing her young boys to manage the feeding times for the litter. Bella never seems worried about other animals around food, but TERRIFIED and THREATENED around people (especially around my young boys OF COURSE!). I don't know if they teased them, moving the bowl around, or had favorite puppies who got more food, better food, or what. Anyway, she is improving but I know things will never be perfect. I will always have to give her treats like bones when I know tat no one else is going to be around that day or evening (including my boys).

Anyway, good luck at the vet. I sympathize with you! I know how frustrating it can be dealing with an aggression issue that came from the past. Hope it goes well. I sure wish Bella was as good on the leader as Lola! ;)

Bella has this same problem. She gets sooooo excited when she sees kids, but sadly the parents interpret her excitement as strange for an "adult dog" and literally will turn and walk the other way. If they knew she was still young, then maybe her behavior would seem more normal. I too, find myself saying over and over and over again, "She's still a puppy. She's very friendly but gets excited to meet people". Even with that disclaimer many people walk around us and give Bella huge space. They're not really interested in trying. I suppose it's just part of the Big Paw experience.

I bottle fed both my boys. My first would never latch on (they say it's common with C-section babies) and my second I managed to BF for about a month. It's not for me either. I am too modest I guess, so the idea that if I left the house and the little one suddenly got hungry... IN PUBLIC made me reluctant to ever leave the house. As convenient as it seems to be for most women, it made my life less convenient. Both my boys have always been super healthy and happy so I never have regretted my choice. I too was pressured; especially with my second. He didn't want to latch on either and the nurse went so far as to suggest that I should "let him starve" until he figures it out because good Mom's BF. I was in tears at the hospital (hubby wasn't all that supportive either). I think that's why I did eventually BF with him for a little while.

Ya know, this might sound yucky... especially when you're nauseous, but when I was in my "morning sickness" phases (which were actually 24-hour sickness stages) I tried everything and nothing worked until this nurse told me to try a hard boiled egg. Worked like a charm. It's this nice dense protein, yet fairly bland and unfancy so it sticks around and keeps things settled. It really worked for me when nothing else would. Hope you feel better soon.

Hi Lyn. Bella wears a gentle leader for the same reasons! Great and calm on the leash 95% of the time, but then we'll encounter something unexpected and in her excitement she's off and I go for a ride. It had to stop!!! Bella hates her gentle leader too. She spends the first 15-20 minutes of our walks each day trying to rub it off in the grass, or on passer-bys.   I have considered trying a harness of some kind, but haven't yet. One thing I will say is that gentle leaders come in two types. The nose band can be thin or thick. I was told by my behaviorist that because Bella's muzzle is so short and so... thick that the thick band is the only way to go. I am not sure if you have the same one or the thin one, but apparently the thinner band is far more irritating and rough on their nose and they tend to notice it more. Bella is getting better and better with it, but she still doesn't like it. My trainer suggested I make Bella wear it in the house with nothing pulling on it every day for a little bit before trying to use it on a walk. That might be a little tougher for you with Lola around. Good luck!

So sorry to hear about Tisha. You made her life wonderful, though! Remember that. I'm sure Tisha is waiting for you.

Wow, what a hunk he was.  :D I love the pics, and for some odd reason I got the shivers on the back of my neck when I scanned through them. That's was very... I don't know but I guess I think Zeus MUST be watching over you.

Wow. First, I am sorry that this is happening to you. I know where you are at; I've been there. What got me through it was telling myself over and over again that someday in the near future I'll look at my situation and be thankful that it happened. That some morning, I'll wake up and realize that the door that was slammed in my face opened up 6 others and all the great things about my life are there because that door was slammed. I would tell myself that every day and one day it was finally true. I know it hurts now, and feels like nothing's ever going to be ok or be the way it's supposed to be. I understand you're feeling of being lost. Your husband is not the man who was meant for you. Someone better, more devoted, more loving and more wonderful was and so this is just part of your journey.

When things finally got better for me, I realized how many things were truly wrong with the way he treated me. I just loved him too much at the time to see it. I think as time moves on you'll find your own strength- in places you didn't even know about- and you'll find reasons for why this was a good thing in the end. I realize this is all down the road, and I am not trying to trivialize how you're feeling now. I just wanted to let you know that you'll survive... you'll THRIVE!!!!! I know it. If you need anything, we are all here for you Blair.

Anything Non-Dog Related / Re: Need Kitty advice...
« on: June 13, 2007, 02:58:33 am »
I suppose I have been SUPER fortunate, as I have had two cats that are sticklers about the box (except for one short period of time). They'll tell me when it's dirty and wait in line when I'm cleaning it. LOL  The one time that I had issues, my little tortoise shell Jupiter kept using my plant pot/soil. I bought some double sided sticky bars that I put in the pot and she stopped using it. Everyone here's given great advice. Best of luck. I have had friends with cats that were so bad they just plain STOPPED using the box altogether and I saw how frustrating it was.

I'm happy to hear that Rogue is doing so well. She has grown into quite a beauty! You are really good at picking out the lookers!  I am sure it must feel good to know that you found her the right home.  SHe looks very happy and healthy.

Congrats Gracie! You should come over and work with Bella! ;) Bella and I need to go to Obedience 2, and someday I would love to get her CGC... although for the moment, just getting her into the second level obedience would be great.

Enjoy Rally! you'll have to tell us all about it. I know nothing... but it sounds cool! :D

WOW! Nice kitchen! I love, love, love fixing up my house. I have to do it all myself of course since there isn't a man around. I don't know if it takes longer because it's just me, or goes faster because there's no male involvement... :D Anyway, my next project is wood flooring. I hope that my next project will look as good quality as your kitchen!

Oh, and dinner sounds yummy. ;)

Labrador Retriever Discussions / Re: Puppy Control

I have also had good luck with Gentle Leader.  There are many options. Welcome to BPO, I am Angeleen and I own a 10 month old Saint.  I have trained Bella to heal and not to pull, but when we see another dog coming (especially if it's one of her park friends) all training usually goes right out the door.  ;) Do some research on all the options out there (harnesses, different collars, etc) and find one that will work for you. You'll be amazed at the difference. Also, once the dog gets used to it, I think it makes them realize that you are in control not them and that seems to help in other areas as well.

Good luck! And do post some pics!!! :D
