Thanks for the advice y'all! I'm sorry I've been MIA for so long. My computer got robbed  :( and I just got a new one. Hope this one sticks!

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome!  :D

I just got a prong collar. I did some research online before going to the Petco, and it seemed like it was worth a try. The only thing is... it's pouring outside and I can't check if it works!  >:(

Meet & Greet BPOers / Any Big Paws in the New York City area?
« on: October 11, 2006, 03:28:13 am »
Just wondering.. Persephone likes playing with dogs of all sizes, especially small ones, for some reason. But I'm always scared that she'll squash one cuz she's a puppy and still very bouncy. And now that she's bigger, dogs seem to react different to her and seem scared to play with her, or even become defensive. So... anyone up for a playgroup?

I've been trying to put off getting a corrective collar, but I've tried everything else to no avail so I guess I should give it a chance. She knows her stuff, but can be defiant at times.. especially now that she's a teenager!

Thanks for all the suggestions! All of you said the same thing about the prong collar, so I'll go with that.

Thanks for all the info! I think I saw that Urban Dog book somewhere around here.. There's so many books on training dogs that it's hard to decide what to get! But if you say that worked for your Gweck, thenI'll give it a try.  :D

By the way, Gweck is such a looker too! I love his shiny shiny coat, and his goofy pictures. Aren't Great Danes grand?

That's the harness that we use. We had the sensi-ble one when she was younger, and it didn't make much of a difference. Now we have the gentle leader, but since we have to hook it up to her collar (cuz the front is a bit too big still, even when making it as tight as it goes), I don't think it works the same. I know that it will help once she gets big enough, but I don't think waiting is a good idea since she the point of her learning now is being able to control her before she becomes HUGE. Now I wish I had gotten a smaller harness, but it didn't make sense at the time, knowing that she would outgrow it.  :-\

Thanks for the reply, and of course, thanks for the compliments. :D I'll try to post some more pictures of her later.

Great Dane Discussions / HELP!How can I train my Dane to walk beside me??
« on: October 10, 2006, 11:01:26 am »
I've tried everything! Persephone is usually very responsive to treats and petting, but when we are outside the house she is only focused on the wonderful smells and sights of the streets. You can forget about regaining her attention if she sees another dog, and once we are in the vecinity of the dog run... Well, let's just say that it takes a lot to hold an 80 lbs. dog back, and she's not even full grown yet!

I've tried positive reinforcement, carrying food in my hand next to me (but she loses interest pretty fast.. there's so many distractions in a city!), and even stopping completely until she gets closer and the leash is slack (but she just goes back to pulling as soon as we start walking again). The only thing that she actually obeys me on outside is when I tell her to sit at the street corners before crossing. She's relatively good with her "come" inside the dog run (and I'm amazed at even just that because there's other dogs to pay attention to). I don't know what else to try. Any suggestions?

I might just get that t-shirt for my bf's birthday or something. I've gotten used to all the comments on the street, but he still gets annoyed sometimes. And it IS always the same questions.

When Persephone was smaller, we always used to get asked if she was a dalmatian. Yeah. Sure, a grey dalmatian with ragged black patches. The other one we got was catahoula. The coats do look similar, but other than that they look nothing alike! I guess people have great imaginations!

I have to say though.. this once, Persephone was playing at the dog run with this huge harlequin (Talek) and a lady came up to us and asked us, in all seriousness, if it was a "horse-dog." Talek's owner had to explain to her that horses and dogs can't breed. Isn't that crazy?
