Yes, we heard it often when he was a puppy and all fluffy.  Bryce is a Newfoundland, but a woman with a group of tourists walking through the park (tours) stopped to let everyone know that I had a Chow.

When I politely corrected her she then told me my breeder was wrong and had accidently sold me a chow.  She knows what chows are because...of course ::) she used to show them and had champions.

Now most folks know what he is but I do get the occasional That is the most beautiful black pyrenese, was he specially bred? :-X

Hey I just caught this...Sorry if I'm too late...
Demoditic is not contagious.
You can actually assist by boosting the immune system.  When a Dog's immune system is down and out...other situations take place.

You may want to just look into some good supplements like Vitamin E and such to help the immune sytem.  Some good herbal doggy products exist for immune system too.  It may help clear it up faster.

Sorry to hear of the woes.  We deal with this quite often with our rescued fellow.  His immune system is not always in balance and it always show up throug his skin.  He's very sensitive, so when he is stressed, it shows up through his skin because the stress (this mean a simple change in our habits, like I said, he's very sensitive) can cause the immune system to straggle.

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Re: is humping bad for the hip?
« on: December 05, 2005, 06:06:34 am »
 :D :o

Well, definately had to stop at this post!!  What an intriguing title!!

Humping pressure on hips...not sure...

BUT, you do realize that humping can have other implications!!

Humping can be due to excitability.  It could be due to a dominance issue.  It could be due to a female in heat.

Personally, we do not allow humping with our dogs and yes, two boys will do the same because it is a dominance issue.   We don't allow it because, a dog is a dog and will do it to small humans if they are led to believe this behavior is alright.  Small humans to dogs are meerly another pup to be dominated.

So rather than hip issues...think about what is causing it!!!  Trust me, we have had our days with our own Newfs, and you don't want a big dog thinking it can hump on a whim!!!

Hi Winslow!  Wow don't you have a sweetie pie there!!!

We were fortunate because our breeder did not limit us on the amount of steps our Newfie pup should do rather she encouraged us to get him used to the steps and to support him while he was doing so!!  But I notice some have mentioned about breeders not allowing too many, so you should ask your breeder.  We did and were delighted with the answer and the advice in how to support him, what was dangerous and not.

Slamming down steps are hard on the front shoulders and elbows.  So we were very watchful as he went down.  We kept a harness (a good solid inch wide tracking harness) and when he went down, we had our hand on the harness and in front of him to ensure he didn't "Barrel" down the steps!!  Nor crash at the bottom.

First we used the treats like others have mentioned, and only encouraged going up.  Up is easier and less frightening.

Hope this helps.

I'm so sorry to hear about Cowboy.  Good Grief.  You must be completely a total emotional wreck by now.  How scary.
I'm thinking you, Cowboy and Chester.  Hope they find out what is happening soon.

Wow.  Don't think I have an actual favorite!  But for fun I've been reading the Harry Potter books, only backwards.  Starting from the recent to the first.

Then I just like to read things in different areas.

Oh, now I guess one of my favorites would be by a Canadian author named Pauline Gedge!  She writes some "history" type novels that are absolutely wonderful and full of detail!!  She has quite a few and so far I've found them all wonderful.  They are mainly "female" focused on important female personalities which are often overlooked in history.  Like "The Eagle and The Raven" is about a Celtic female leader.  It was pretty intense!!

It's funny how newfies develop such interesting personalities!!

THis made me laugh.  We try to keep the landminds cleaned daily, but ya know, a pile usually escapes us.
And most inevitiably, our stinky monty man will step in it to remind us.  ::)

The kid has the worse stinking feet on this side of the globe 3 times if not more out of the month.  Special foot soaks to dislodge the smell.  He always finds the over looked pile. >:(

Newfs are so easy to please when it comes to food!   ;D

We used hot dogs, but the very best treat we have ever used was chewy/moist yummie chummies.  You can tear them for just a little piece, and just the scent drives them to do what you want!!
