Great Dane Discussions / MUD, POOP, AND MUDDY POOP!!!!!
« on: March 12, 2008, 03:22:42 pm »
OK BPO'ers what do you do with all the POOP! Now I knew Ellie would have large piles so I am not surprised with the amount. But I live on many acres and have about a quarter of an acre fenced in for Jack and Ellie and I shovel a lot an it gets put out in the "pasture". What do you all do with the stuff? I figure it's biodegradable but for those in town, if it is put in a plastic bag then it becomes not-biodegradable? When you clean your yards where do you put it? Just curious as I had to think about something while doing the chore.
To make matters worse now that the big Ohio snow storm is melting we have TONS of standing water. And what is the water mixing with in my backyard....? YES! POOP! UGH! We are wiping feet when the dogs come in but you can't get it all and I know there is more than mud on those paws......EEWW WW!! Mop must Mop...

BTW Ellie is 10mo and 32" at the shoulders. We need to get an updated weight. She was around 100 back in December!!!

Great Dane Discussions / Elli May update and another question
« on: February 29, 2008, 03:23:50 pm »
Hello everyone. Well Elli May's eating problem disappeared the day after my posting about her not eating well. I guess it was a phase as now she is ravenously consuming all she can get. We upped her meals by about a half a cup as we figure she is going through another growth spurt. She will be 10 months in two days. Wow! She is growing up fast.
I do however have a question regarding her coat. She is a mantle great dane but right now she looks like she is "rusting". There looks to be a brownish tint to her coat. It is also a bit dry looking. Is this just a winter coat thing? It looks like she is black with deep brown "highlights" does that make sense? Someone else wouldn't even notice but as her momma of course I do. Any ideas? Appreciate it!

Food Discussion & Information / Eagle Pak users how are your dogs stools?
« on: February 20, 2008, 04:08:34 am »
We have used Eagle Pak always for our Dane and we've always had soft stools. I was wondering if this is what other EP users experience. Our Dane gets the EP however our mixed breed Jack has always eaten Natural Choice Lamb and Rice and has always had nice firm stools even when he gets lots of treats. So I wondered if I should be giving my dane something to help firm her stools?..

Thanks

Great Dane Discussions / Why isn''t she eating????
« on: February 20, 2008, 03:59:02 am »
My almost 10 mo old Great Dane Ellie May has not been eating well for the last three or four days. She is leaving quite a bit of food in her bowl. I feed two times a day and she has been getting about 4cups of dry with a couple tbsp of canned per feeding . Thanks

Introduce Yourself to the Forum / Re: NEWBIE!!!!

Hi Hunter! I'm fairly new to posting here as well. Are you from the Michigan City in Indiana? If so we are almost (by a few hours)neighbors! Can't wait to see your pups. We have a lab/shepherd/beagle mix named Jack and a new girl Ellie May the Great Dane pup 9weeks old. I am still learning the pic posting as well. Have a great time here as I think these are the only "sane" dog lovers I know  ;).

Oh I am so sorry. I have been honored to get to know your baby while lurking here. No matter how long you have them it is just never enough. It is a testament to you and your vet that you were able to hold him in your arms at home while he crossed. May peace rain down on your house.

Great Dane Discussions / Re: Help I am blowing it big time with Ellie
« on: July 03, 2007, 08:05:35 pm »
I haven't been giving treats at potty time because I've been too afraid of screwing up her health. Honestly, I am paranoid about doing the wrong thing as far as her eating because it seems like now is such a sensitive time. However, I do believe I will try it. I also think we are getting somewhere with the crate training. She was not too bad yesterday and last night my son wanted to sleep downstairs with her ( I have been doing this). I was so tired I didn't hear her at all. As a matter of fact my dh woke me up at 4:00 am. and asked if I checked on her. We went down and peeked in and she was sleeping. This morning however, her crate was a mess. She peed in several spots on her blanket. I asked ds how many times she went out and he said 1 time around 4:30. NO WONDER!!! I know it will take time. Patience is so not my strong point. Thanks for all the wisdom I am definitely putting it to good use.

We have tried the loud noise but haven't tried the leash, but I will definitely think about that. I don't want her to associate the leash with something negative as we haven't yet gotten her used to it. It is mostly me I am sure. I've been a little (okay a lot) frustrated because everything I've read makes it sound like she should be able to go for at least and hour or so before she decides to pee. I timed her this afternoon and it is so random. She peed 3 more times on the floor and tried two more times on the deck. It was anywhere from 10min to 30 min after we took her out to go. AHHH. I'm also frustrated by our vet visit and am pretty sure I'll have to find a new one. He is less than supportive of any information from the internet as apparently I'm too stupid to discern factual information from false.UGGHH! Also, I'm a little concerned with her weight. She is very "ribby". I know danes should be lean but she is THIN. The breeder said 1 1/2 cups two times a day and we've upped it a little to  1 1/4 cups three times a day. I've looked at several pics of danes around her age and they all seem to at least be filled out in the rib area. Could anyone tell me what they are (or were) feeding at around 9 weeks of age? I've looked at the Great Dane Ladies site and she reccommends 2-4 cups at this age starting at the low end. Help  :'(

Thanks everyone..... I still need a nap. ::)
On a more pleasant note Ellie is doing very well with basic obedience and is doing pretty well with "Sit"

Still can't get my pics up. Almost everything on this site has boxes with red X's in it. :(

Great Dane Discussions / Help I am blowing it big time with Ellie
« on: July 03, 2007, 03:16:56 am »
Okay, after 3 very sleepless nights my patience is wearing thin. Ellie is a huge howler not just in the night but even in the day. I tried starting over with introducing the crate so she wouldn't hate it so much. I don't even know how it's going! She is now refusing to come to the potty spot. Today she has peed in the house twice and on the back deck once. I have carried her out to the spot over and over but she runs back up to the deck and sits by the door. So I have been putting her back in her crate when we go in because I know she is waiting to do it on the floor. Of course this brings on the howling. I have given her chews and toys in her crate with her. I don't even remember anymore if I should ignore her or tell her "Quiet!" when she howls. She is starting to hate me I just know it. Please point me in the right direction. I am honestly taking her out about every 45 min. because if I don't she will mess on the floor. Up until this point we've had her out of her crate most of the day but today she has become horrid to deal with. I need a nap a long, long nap.

Does anyone else hear the WAAAMMMMMBULAN CE!! :-[

Thanks and sorry, but Jack was soooooo easy to train.

Thanks so much to all of you who helped me with my questions regarding breeders. You really can't know much about someone until you look them in the eye. Well, we went to meet the breeder and the pup she had available. We asked questions, toured the facilities which she was more than happy to have us do. We even got to meet the pup's father who is from another breeder. They were there! That was a treat for sure. We met mom who was just wonderful and the other Danes were as well. We received some great "lean time" and of course met the puppy. Some other new moms and dads were there to pick up there pups so it was great to get there opinions and perspective. One family was there to pick up their third dane! It was a great experience for our whole family and of course, we brought her home. So please give a big Dane Welcome to our new baby....Ellie May.
Sorry I can't seem to get the pics thing working so I have to postpone the actual unveiling.  :-[ We have lots of questions but right now she is sleeping so I am going to sneak in a nap.

Thanks All of You

Hello everyone I wanted to update you all on our search. Things have gotten better. I have talked at length with the breeder and am feeling better. They have been showing over the weekends and this is the biggest reason for the lack of contact. I will be meeting her soon as one of the pups from another dam has come available. The family that had her on hold are relocating and so we are going to take a look. The sire is from another breeder and I have been doing lots of research on him and his breeder as well. Health certs are all available for them, parents, full siblings and half-siblings which I have been checking all that are registered. The pups have a health guarantee and are to be taken back to the breeder if we can no longer take care of her. They are raised in house so they are being exposed to knew things everyday. Wish me luck on this as I am still nervous however, I still want your voices of reason. We won't be going for several days so let me hear your advice.
Thanks

BTW I haven't given up on possibly getting a rescue.

Thanks you guys. You can imagine how much we are agonizing over this. We have been re-discussing the rescue route as I am just honestly, almost to the point of paralyzation as to finding a good breeder. I am second guessing myself already in light of the responses here. I haven't been asked by this breeder any questions other than if we wanted put on the list. Granted, the litter isn't due till fall but I would feel so much better if she gave us the third degree. I hate using any breeder that I have found on the internet but how in the world do you find a great breeder? :o The newspaper adds are definitely out. Classified internet adds are out. I stumbled on the breeders site that I have contacted but am still feeling uneasy. Maybe I have a problem. "Bad-breeder Frightenosis" ;D
Keep directing me please. One more thing on rescue... we have a "submissive" 12yr old who is more than a bit uneasy about the size of a large dane. Hence the puppy avenue as well. Would I need to worry about this with a rescue Dane...you know possibly dominating this child?

Thanks everyone.
