Because it's such an early Easter it's also my husband's Birthday so we'll celebrate tomorrow afternoon with a big BBQ and friends.  Easter Sunday (his real B'day) will be also be a "getting over it day".

My husband and I just laughed and laughed over those pics .. we guess you'll just have to sell your house and get a bigger shower/bed.

Having just gone thru this in the past two weeks with horrible consequences let me add - do something NOW about this.  When I bought Sadie home it was tense with a couple of fights and I have never fed them in the same room, treats I always made them sit and fed them around each other because Sadie and Copper get their's and take it to the carpet and lay down and eat them.  Emmitt does grab all the toys and lays in the middle of them sometimes but I always go get them and either put them up and give one to Emmitt and one to Sadie, in front of Emmitt so he can see she gets them too.  When Sadie and Emmitt got into it two weeks ago there was no warning .. their trigger is ME not food. I was drying Em and Sadie off from being outdoors when I guess they decided one was getting more attention than the other or Emmitt thought Sadie was coming after me while trying to play with the drying towel. I can't be glad to see them or break out into song and dance (they love that) I can't be sweet with them they have to work for everything .. I hate it and it's the hardest thing I've ever done.  The other night I took Copper, my old clueless one, into the walk in closet and shut the door just to cuddle with her, she doesn't see too well and I can't talk sweet to her without the other two getting excited and thinking we can all play again. I just keep thinking .. in the long run we're all going to be happier and even weathier without the med / vet bills that could and have occurred.  OUCH

When I went to pick up Sadie at the groomers the other day she'd taken a pic on her cell phone of Sadie lounging in the bath .. she actually had to wait for her brother to get there to have help to move Sadie out of it.  Of course Sadie lays in mud puddles, drinks from the running creek from the bottom up .. she stays wet.

Thank you so very much for remembering me, my pups, and my husband.  We're all doing better, I spoke with a couple of trainers and will be practicing NILIF religiously.  Steve's hand is mending nicely and is still immobilized right now, he'll have the external stitches removed next week and is already dreading that part. I'm a strong believer in thoughts coming to you and helping you when you need them and opening your card just brought a tear to my eye .. it just helps to know people think of you even when you don't know it.  You're amazing people !!  Gaye

Hello from a fellow Kentuckian.  Welcome to the best most informative doggie forum on the net.  Mom / slave / amazed and lately stunned by Copper, the cocker, Emmitt, the springer, and Sadie the newf.

Thank you for your responses everyone.  I'm in a small town but will start searching for a behaviorist ASAP, if anyone has used one would you direct me on questions to ask to be sure I'm getting what I need, costs kinda things, I know I'll have to pay mileage and if nothing else if I have to separate them I hope to get pointers on how to go about this by them visiting my home.  Steve's right hand is in a splint and he was directed to leave it on except when showering to keep it imobilized I guess .. I make an appt with the surgeon on Monday for Wednesday when I guess he'll tell us about PT.  Steve is a smoker but maybe this will help him decide to try to quit.  What a mess this is but as always .. this too shall pass.

HUGS to all of us that have been thru the cancer scare and healing thoughts to all that it wasn't just a scare.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Dog fight - Human Surgery
« on: March 07, 2008, 04:02:44 pm »
This week has been beyond up and down .. I found a mass in my breast .. got into surgery last Wednesday, found it was non malignant WONDERFUL news but you can imagine I've been on pins and needles for almost 3 wks .. dogs know these things I know that.  Anyway, I'm at home since Wednesday and just running a bit slow, I've not had the dogs out exercising and snow started in last night about 4 pm.  Emmitt, the springer, has been just horrible all day, growling, grabbing all the toys, won't leave my side hardly, Cop, the cocker on pain meds is snoozing more, I guess because of the low pressure and the gas logs are cozy for her.  Sadie just seem restless and keeps wanting in and out the door.  Snow starts and it's Sadie's probably 10th trip in and Em had gone out also so I'm toweling them off everytime they come in and out .. needless to say I'm getting tired and sore so no doubt I'm cranky.  Sadie starts playing fighting with the towel I'm using to dry her off after I've finished drying off Em, and the absolute WORST fight between Emmitt and Sadie begins, I'm yelling and trying to drop the towel between them and Sadie (for the first time ever is not making her point and backing away)keeps lunging at Emmitt, Emmitt is going down.  Steve, my husband reacts (just as they say you shouldn't)  Results: .. his hands are mangled, literally mangled.  (I don't drive on snow - this is the worst snowfall we've had since the early 90's)  I called 911 and they sent an ambulance - I stayed home (we live way out in the country) because with the weather I knew I wouldn't be able to get anyone out to care for our animals .. Steve was in ER / surgery from about 6:30 pm until 1 am .. and just got home today at noon .. over 100 stitches in one hand and the surgeon doesn't think he'll regain sensation in his thumb.  I'm so upset - how many times have you heard and read if "I'd only read the signs", "I knew something was going to happen.",  Steve knew he did wrong by entering into the fray like he did but I've got to find a way to not allow this to happen again, these two dogs have to co exist or it's going to break my heart ..I am sick to my stomach - I thought they'd finally gotten their "order" right but I guess not and I need help quick - please, any suggestions?  Gaye

Newfoundland Discussions / Re: Are newfs big Face lickers or kissers.

Sadie isn't a big kisser either.  She'll lick SteveO's foot (that he keeps out from the covers when he sleeps) to wake him to go outside but as far as coming up to us and kissing,  no.  She does love a good nose to nose if you fall asleep on the couch and I have learned to sleep in the middle of the bed if I want to sleep in.

Newfoundland Discussions / Re: Adopted 1.5 yr old Newfie
« on: February 28, 2008, 08:38:52 am »
We've had Sadie since last July and adopted her at 2 yrs.  She still barks when she hears a dog on TV (this can drive you crazy if you leave the TV on when you fall asleep and the "box dog" barks at 3 am)  The paw thing kinda drives me nuts too because normally it's when I finally settled down to watch TV.  I  find that if I splay my hand out on her chest and push back as she lifts her paw she puts it back down .. I just push and say no (calmly) and after a few trys she finds something more fun.

I got the Dyson Animal after having my rainbow for gosh I'm guessing 15 yrs.  I love the fact that the dirt and grit didn't fly back into the air with the rainbow but it wasn't doing a thing since moving to this house between the white cat the black Newf and my two spaniels and thickest carpet ever covering the majority of the house.  Let me say the very best thing about the Dyson is ... it works so well that my husband runs probably more than I do !!  I will say this I'm not impressed with it's results on hardwood or tile so if I didn't have carpet I'd still be using the Rainbow.

Hello and congrats on your new pup.  I rescued a 2 yr old Newf last July and these wonderful people at BPO told me about the lunge line and it worked out quite a few issues with Sadie.  To include wandering off to play with the new calves to learning what is potty time and what is exercise time, coming when called.  I got Sadie's lunge lead at tractor supply in the horse dept.  It's a 30 foot one and to calm her down to do some training I would take her up and down the driveway on the lead while I was in the golf cart - poor Sadie had been crated about 18 hrs a day for I don't know how long until we "got" her. If you exercise her pretty good and she's needs to "go"  that'll do it I found.  Also after about 2 wks .. Sadie learned the long lead was for exercise and play/training/maybe in your case potty and the short lead was for trips in the car and walks in town - but it wasn't an overnight thing.

Whew, they are so sweet I want to hold and play and breathe in puppy breath .. and beautiful sweet Mom, I wonder if Sadie would have been so attentive.  Just the Newfie temperment would make you think they would be the best Mom's and Pop's.
