Medical Conditions & Diseases / Re: Anyone any experience of this please.

My basset had a fatty tumor, it would go up and down.Sometimes soft, sometimes hard.  We could not remove it because she had a blood clotting disorder and surgery was out of the question. Fatty tumors are completely harmless. My vet aspirated hers with a needle and could tell by what he extracted that it was a harmless fatty tumor so we just left it. I am sure your vet can diagnosis it with the same simple unintrusive procedure. Dont' worry until you have cause to.

Great job!

Love and Patience, that's all it takes. Our puppers really do want to be good puppers we just need to show them how. Pat yourself on the back for a job well done and a much happier Dane baby.

First of all, I cannot imagine going to a vet I didn't trust or "click" with. You need to find the right vet for other reasons besides diet. Then address the food thing. Hubby may open his mind if food advice comes from a new vet or someone he considers an "expert" on it.

Second of all, I think a lot of vets advise against raw and home cooked diets because most don't think most pet owners are knowledgable enough or educated enough to do it the right way. It is easier if good nutrition comes "prepackaged". My vet knows me well enough to know that what "people" food I treat my pups to is safe and preportioned. Tink was on a rice and boiled chicken diet after getting ill from a "bad bag of cheap dog food" when she was a pup. He acknowledges the benefits but knows it can be more complicated and time consuming for most pet owners to keep up with and be disciplined enough to proportion control.

That being said, he supports my feeding Innova although he does not sell it. MOst of his clients cannot afford it. He is a wealth of knowledge on nutrition but understands most clients cannot afford or are not consciencious enough to invest in the best.

What kind of dogs do you have and how old are they? This may help determine your best fencing.

I have an underground invisible fence and have had it over ten years with various breeds and love it. However, it is best to start them out on it as pups. It is not impossible to train an older dog, just easier to teach boundries to puppies. The key is training either way. You can't just put it in and let them loose and expect them to figure it out.

They also make a "radius" invisible fence, one you don't have to bury but the transmitter must be in the center of the fenced area and will transmit a signal in a specified radius around the transmitter.

If you are going to leave them outside unattended for any length of time, a physical fence would be a better bet and would keep people and other animals out as well as keep your dogs in.

I don't use my invisible fence when I am not at home to contain my dogs. They are still vulnerable to intruders, theft, etc. They may stay in but you need to be able to keep people/critters out as well.

My mom has a golden retriever and Harley is "built" alot like her. However, I did see picts of her mother and she was definately a St Bernard mix, however she was small for her breed too given she was 8 mos old when she had her litter and not under the best conditions. Harley's brothers looked the most like Newfs (which is what they say her father was)they were 15 lbs heavier at 14 weeks and much broader built. Who knows ... I am taking her to the vet today for a weigh in and we will see how she is doing. She was the runt and with the parvo thing she may just be fated to be my mini big paw.

Here are some of big sister too.

OK.... what did I miss ????????????

I have been away for about a month due to some personal issues and I am a little lost????????????

Anyway, I have gotten several PM requests for news on Harley. Sorry it has taken so long but here are some picts from today. They aren't great but you know how it is trying to get them to sit still and pose.

She is doing well health wise but much smaller than I expected her to be at this age. She is about 7 1/2 months and about 70lbs. She eats like a horse but she doesn't seem to be gaining  much. She is on Innova large breed puppy still, two feedings a day, total 6 cups.

What do you all think? Granted she is not a pure breed and then there was the parvo thing. Do you think the parvo thing would still be impairing her ability to absorb nutrition? Her stool tested clean in April and May. What do you think?

I would also check with your apartment complex you are planning to rent. My company buys and sells apartment complexes and they ususally have a weight limit and may also discriminate against certain breeds.

For apartment life, I would go with a medium sized young adult dog. If your puppy has many accidents or decides to chew the base boards, it may be costly to you when you decide to move out. Also, you would be able to anlayze its temperment and energy level from the start and make a more educated decision about which dog is right for you and your lifestyle.

Good Luck in whatever you decide and post picks when the time comes.

Mixed Breed Discussion / Re: What Newf mixes would you like to see?
« on: April 02, 2009, 05:41:28 am »
This was Tink's 8 week old photo at 25lbs the first day I brought her home, she has definately changed colors. She is 14 months now and around 120lbs. There is one by the gate where she is starting to metamorphasize . She looks like a silver back gorilla.

As for Harley, I do see the Saint and the newf, but she was the runt and did not receive adequate food her first 14 weeks, had parvo, and her mother was a saint mix less than one year old when she gave birth. She spent her entire first three months locked in a shed with her mom and 4 siblings, never let out, no light, etc. Her brothers were all about 15lbs larger than her too. She definately had some strikes against her but according to what I have read at 4 months and 45lbs, she is not that far off on the newf chart. My vet agrees with her age range. She had all her puppy teeth when I got her and almost has all her adult teeth now. I think she got off to a bad start but she'll get there. I think this pict (see below) definately looks saint.

Newfoundland Discussions / Re: Can't resist newfs

Barking is a natural response for all dogs. However, this can also be a training issue. Consult a dog trainer if necessary but if you give your dog the attention it wants because it is baking... it will always bark. If it doesn't get a result from barking it wont' do it or do it as much. This is a patience game.

Rewarding your dog for correct behavior is just as important if not more than correcting him/her for unwanted behavior. You have to find an effective way to communicat with your particular dog, then you can let him/her know what is expected of him. It is very time consuming and requires a lot of patience but in the end you get out of it what you put into it.

My big girl is a very obedient, happy companion but I spent the last year in weekly obedience classes, field trips and outings to get her effectively socialized so when she is in a new enviornment she looks to me as how to behave. I can take her anywhere and not worry about how she will react to strangers or strange places. Give that she is 120lbs at 13 months and still growing this is extremly important.

Those in our christmas card exchange last year all got a very cool homemade CD with dog songs in it.

Tink when running through the house trying to find all the dogs when "Who let the dogs out, Whooff, Whooff, Whooff" came on. It was hysterical.

"Which way did dthey go???" it was like something out of a looney tunes cartoon.

I bet no one every dreamed of a Komondor Black Lab cross but that is just what I got and I love how unique she is. She has the best of both personality traits and really cool fur. (She just had her hair done!)I call her my pretty bear, not horse though.

Then there is my recent rescue Harley who is a newf/saint mix. She is only 4 months old so no telling how she will turn out yet.

I like the crosses you get with mixes sometimes. I wouldn't trade mine for the world. Unfortunately these "accidents" or "curious breedings" too often end up in shelters, like mine.
