Leonberger Discussions / Re: Accident - Feeling Guilty

*****Update********

Brought Maggie to the Vet and after some very expensive tests determined that the eye was ok, just a "black eye" sort of speak. He gave us some drops for the pain and now a few days later, her eye looks almost back to normal - whew!

Unfortunately the BILL from the vet was shocking. Anyone use pet insurance? How has it worked for you?

Thanks everyone

Bernard

Leonberger Discussions / Accident - Feeling Guilty

Tonight I was playing with Maggie and threw a bone just left of her, she had been chasing a toy and started trying to chew an inappropriate object so I tossed the bone to get her attention. When I did it her back was towards me but foolishly I said her name, so as the bone hit the ground, Maggie turned her head towards is and one bounce later the bone pokes her hard right in the eye. Immediately she started wailing this horrible cry and started dancing around. The bone got her good and now her eye is all swollen and puffy. Talk about a horrible feeling.

Tomorrow we will evaluate the eye and bring her to the vet, I couldn't feel worse  :'(

Leonberger Discussions / Re: Thoughts on prong collars? Need HELP!
« on: July 30, 2008, 06:31:32 pm »
We have gone through lots of training with all of our dogs, and we truly believe that the pronged collar is actually better than the zip collar. I didn't read all the posts yet and I probably should but the benefit of the pronged collar is equal pressure all around the neck instead of a pinching that the slide collar produces.

People have this misconception that the "choke" is what gets the dogs attention but in fact it was supposed to be the sliding of the collar making the grating noise that gets the desired result, same holds true for the pronged collar. Just make sure it is the right size and only using it during training, it should not be on the dog all day.

Just my 2 cents

Let's see. I have washed Maggie about six times since I got her. A few times for explosions in her crate when I was out, but mostly due to her friend Shockey (the Bull Mastiff) slobbering all over her coat (not to mention the rolling around together in the dirt).

I am finding that a clean Maggie is nearly impossible.

It is funny how you never notice it until you see the before and after pictures. To me, she is still the tiny little dog I first saw at 8 weeks. Now she looks like a monster sized dog and I have to realize that she is going to gain another 80-100 pounds. Mind numbing.

Geez...amazing . I have had Maggie for 5 weeks, in that time she has quadrupled her weight and look how big she is.

Crazy

Thanks everyone for their response. This is my first Bernese and I can already tell that I am hooked. I am sure I will have  a million questions and appreciate the fact that I know I can come here for help, advice and friendship.

Thanks

Thanks! You have a great looking group there also. Unfortunately the Bull Mastiff is not mine, just a friend of Maggie who loves to take pictures :)

Maggie is 13 weeks old, pure BMD and an awesome dog. Recently we have noticed that her coat is changing. Can anyone let me know what to expect? It started with her tail (a ring of hair started forming and it is spreading toward her butt, as well as her undercoat seems to be thickening up. I am brushing her often and bathing her as necessary....c an someone give some timelines and advice on what we should be seeing with the coat change?

Thanks

Bernard
