Great Pyrenees Discussions / From livejournal

Just saw this and thought I would pass it along...

Puppy:Great Pyrenees
Sprakers, NY 518-234-7777
Leslie- captcrooks@hotmail.com
Name: Fred
Age:6 months
Sex:M
Size:XL
Fred came to our farm with his brother Barney to protect our over 150 goats. Barney is content living with the goats but Fred is not. He kept escaping to come and play with our young child and other farm dog. He is not cut out to be a goat protection dog but he is cut out to be a great pet! He is now living in the house and doing great. House training is going great with no accidents so far. He is also working on leash manners and is doing well. He is cautious at times and I have to pull him! (For example he stops walking as we get near the road and will not go any farther) He does however seem to get over his apprehensions after he experiences something once or twice. He is happy and playful and good with other dogs. We have a few cats around and he is ok with them too. We would be thrilled to see him find a loving home. We did trade some expensive goats for him and his brother so will ask for $100.00. He is mostly white with a subtle balack mask around the eyes.

Charlotte has really warmed up...  here she is with Freddie!  Also in case you were wondering -- she eats like a champ now.   :D  We switched to Performatrin Ultra -- huuuuge hit with both dogs AND the cats.

Great Pyrenees Discussions / pictures!
« on: June 02, 2006, 04:43:40 pm »
charlotte still isn't eating dog food  ???, but other than that, she has pretty much adjusted.  much less cowering and jumpiness.  still loves the bed tho!  here she is with freddie, playing in the yard.    :D ;D  and there she is with her best friend simon.   ;D  if anyone has any suggestions about getting her to eat, that would be great.  i've cut out most of the treats, but i'm scared to totally stop bc she literally hasn't eaten any dog food.  *sigh*

Great Pyrenees Discussions / advice, please!
« on: May 30, 2006, 08:21:13 pm »
just adopted a second pyr - a sweet, shy two year old girl.  we think she was abused in her last home - she is very timid and cowers at any noise or sudden movements.  i am looking for some advice about eating and drinking.  we've had her since sunday, and she has probably only eaten a half a cup of food since then, a few pieces of cheese, and (ew) cat food.  she's not malnuerished - the vet says maybe 8-10 lbs underweight, and he's sure she'll come around.  in the meantime, we've tried everything we can think of - she has no interest in chicken or steak (or regular dog food).  it also takes a lot of coaxing to get her to drink anything.  we've tried staying with her, leaving her alone, etc.  the only time she will eat is on the bed, with the cats around her having treats of their own, and our other pyr munching on treats sitting next to the bed.  it all seems very strange.  she drinks the most when simon, our oldest cat, is curled up next to her.  any ideas/suggestions?  we're so worried.  she is just the sweetest thing, she loves to come over, put her paws in our lap, and snuggle her head into our arms/shoulders.  we just want her to know she is home for good, and we won't let anyone hurt her.  help!

Great Pyrenees Discussions / Freddie & his kittens
« on: December 07, 2005, 09:13:44 pm »
We adopted two little black kittens in August and then a few weeks later, a stray followed me home.  (Actually, he followed me into a parking garage, into the elevator, to my car, and then hopped in when I opened the door...)  Freddie is in heaven.  I can't believe how sweet he is with them.  Oh, and with the stray, Simon... the food always looks better in the other bowl, ey?   :D ;)

Great Pyrenees Discussions / Summer heat - Cut back his fur?
« on: July 04, 2005, 02:09:58 pm »
I've read in Pyr books not to shave Pyrs in the summer b/c the hair protects them from the beating sun...  but does anyone know about having them trimmed?  I was at PetSmart and talked to a woman who was having her St. Bernard cut back - he looked adorable - and she said she does it every summer.  I figure it's probably fine or PetSmart wouldn't do it, but I'd rather hear from other Pyr owners!  Any advice?   ??? :D

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Fear of stairs
« on: May 11, 2005, 12:17:37 pm »
In the last couple of weeks, my 10 month old Pyr has developed a strange fear of inside stairs.  He didn't fall or stumble on any steps, as far as I know.  When we go upstairs at night with our other dog, he stands at the bottom and whimpers.  He'll only come up if we go down and push him from behind - if we try to pull him with a leash he just puts the breaks on or runs to another room.  It's really strange - once he gets going he bounds up exitedly and runs into the bedroom where he knows he'll get a treat.  Anyone have any idea what's going on?  We're at the shore this week and he will come right up the outside stairs with no problem, but the inside stairs it's the same thing - whimpers or barks and refuses to come up with us or after we go up.  I've got no ideas here - anyone out there have any?

He also will jump up on couches by himself with no problems, but he has always asked to get up on the bed by putting his front feet up and waiting for us to give him a boost with his back legs - I think he learned this because it's how our 12 year old Shepherd gets into the car.  I wonder if it's related to the stairs thing, since he'll put his front feet on the first step - but it's a new development.  Hmm.
