General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Small dog frustration
« on: August 21, 2005, 05:41:25 pm »
Yesterday we went to our nieces 5th birthday pool party with our gang - always an event.  Before we walked in the door we noticed several people rolling their eyes and said, "Oh no" as soon as they set eyes on our gang.  Rocco and Bella are very well trained, have excellent manners, do not beg for food and are just pleasant to be around. They just want to love and kiss you. So, as soon as we walk in, our brother-in-law's father's dog, Molly (Beagle) barked and challenged our gang.  Our gang hung back, didnt bark or challenge back just looked at her like "Hey, what's your problem? We just came  to swim in the pool."  Well Molly charges up to Rocco and bit his face.  Rocco was stunned but wasnt  hurt, wasnt phased, showed no aggression at all.  Over the course of several hours, Molly harassed our gang, barked and challenged and of course the owner did not correct her, just said, "Oh Molly." Molly did also tried to nip Bella.  Later on I overheard the owner saying to Molly, "You have to protect us from this big mean dogs." ::)

During dinner, Molly was jumping up on chairs, stole someone's hamburger, and later stole a whole hot dog bun with hot dog in it and chowed it down.  She constantly barked, begged for food, jumped on chairs to steal others food and the owners thought this was so cute >:(

Meanwhile, our gang played in the pool, sat in the shade next to us, showed their manners, and never barked or challenged Molly.  Sad to say there were others at the party that shared this sentiment that we have big, uncontrollable dogs.  It was disappointing how big dogs get branded as  the bad guuys and smaller ones, are able to get away with murder.

As always the Newf temperment and personality shined through ;)

Newfoundland Discussions / The poop saga continues!
« on: August 21, 2005, 05:26:40 pm »
Well Rocco was at it again.  The town we live in had their annual "Mellon Fest" to celebrate the summer harvest of mellons.  So we were walking around with our gang on Main St. minding our own business taking in the sites when out of the blue Rocco decides to drop and squat on the middle of the sidewalk :o.  Yes another goey, running one :'(.  The boy has no hangups about where or when he goes.  Bella would never think of doing something as nasty as that - she is too much of a lady.  Who knows where Rocco will strike next...

Newfoundland Discussions / I can't believe it, I'm so embarassed!
« on: August 21, 2005, 05:16:58 pm »
Last week we took the gang to the lake right by our house to swim.  Every Newfie just loves to swim :D.  They were having a great time retrieving the balls we through out for them.  Our big boy, Rocco starts to causally swim around and all of sudden without any warning we see a blob of diaheria floating from his rear end :o.  We are talking the runny, goey, totally nasty kind.  There was even peas, carrots and other vegetables (ingredients in the dog food he eats) floating towards us - disgusting!  Rocco just had a look on his face like "I don't know what your problem is, it's just a little bit of poop - no big deal ;D"  Thank God no one was around or we would be banned for life.  What a character.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / What is your AKC name?
« on: August 06, 2005, 07:03:57 am »
Gina and I were watching a dog show on Animal Planet this am and were laughing at the funny or serious registered names of the dogs.  So we were wondering what is your dog's "official" registered AKC name.  Bella's is pretty boring - Bella Rose but we got a little more creative with Rocco's - B&K's Hey! How you doin? Rocco.  What is yours??

Mike (Gina's husband)

Newfoundland Pictures / A ha! Rocco caught in the act!
« on: August 04, 2005, 05:42:01 am »
Rocco was a busy little puppy yesterday. His new thing is to sort through the kitchen thrash, and he has been knocking the thrash can over to see if there is anything that just might be a good treat in there.  Last night I was upstairs and knew he was downstairs, and it was just too quiet down there, so I know that means he is getting into something. I went downstairs and when I saw him I laughed so hard I cried!!  As you can see from the picture below, he put his head in the thrash bin and his big head got stuck!!!  He was wearing the top of the can around like it was no big deal.

He also loves to pull toilet paper off the roll. I usually keep the bathroom doors closed but forgot one yesterday.  I found him lying in the hallway, and he had pulled the roll off all the way into the hallway and was happily chewing away.

Then......I found him chewing a box that my cologne came in that he got out of my garbage in the bedroom.  That's my boy ::)

As you can see Rocco was a busy little guy, who knows what antics he'll be up to today. Never a dull moment around here :)

Hi Everyone. I am posting this on behalf of my friend, Michelle, who is also on this site, known as Mitchie. Michelle has 2 big paws, Daisy (6 yr old Rottie) and Phoebe (1 yr old yellow lab).

Michelle posted last week that she had found a swollen lymph node on Daisy's back leg.  Daisy had it removed and biopsied last week. Today Michelle learned that Daisy has Immunoblastic lymphoma.
Her vet said Daisy  now needs to be seen by an oncologist to determine next course of action re:treatment. Daisy and Michelle have an appt tommorrow to see a well renowned vet in the Detroit area, who specializes in holisitc medicine as well as oncology.  The vet said that Daisy's has an aggresive form of this disease :'(

Does anyone have any experience with this diagnosis? any info/insights/ideas would be greatly appreciated. Whatever feedback you have I will pass on to Michelle. My heart goes out to her. Daisy is her life and I know she's hurting right now.

Thanks for listening!

Newfoundland Discussions / Our big boy!
« on: July 16, 2005, 01:50:04 pm »
We took Rocco in to the vet to weigh him today. He is 17 weeks and weighs 65.5 pounds! We're just amazed at how quickly he is growing. He's growing so much faster than Bella did. Matter of fact, she now weighs 92 pounds and is 1 yr. We hope he isnt growing too fast. Last visit to the vet 2 weeks ago he  didnt make any comments about his weight. We are measuring his food, and he is solid. If he keeps growing at this rate, maybe we'll buy him a saddle ;D

Newfoundland Discussions / Where to find dog bibs?
« on: July 16, 2005, 01:44:00 pm »
Hello!  I need to get some bibs for my boy Rocco. He's really drooling and his chest hair is getting so matted! He's such a dirty boy. Does anyone know where I can order one online? Any good websites? I'd love to get him one that says "Mama's big boy"! I think that would be so cute. I'm curious to see what's out there. Thanks for your suggestions ;D

Newfoundland Discussions / Bella's b-day party
« on: June 28, 2005, 02:29:12 pm »
Hello!  Monday is Bella's 1st birtday! Woohoo ;D  We are going to celebrate by having a doggie party at our friend's home who is also on this site, she has a Rottie and a yellow lab.  We're even getting little party hats for the gang to wear, will be fun to see how long those last! All the dogs get along so well together and are the best of pals.  Our friend has a pond so our babies will spend the afternoon swimming and lounging around. Any one have any recipes for a dog friendly "cake" or dessert?  We'll post some pictures to share.

Transporting & Traveling With Dogs / Planning a Trip with your Pet
« on: June 26, 2005, 06:04:20 pm »
Hello!
We are planning a trip to NC  (Charlotte and Raleigh) in October.  We're planning on relocating there in the next year or two and want to scope it out. We want to take the dogs instead of leaving them in a kennel or have a pet sitter come daily. We did some research and found that Residence Inn's allow large breeds. By chance, does any one know of any other hotel chains that accomodate big paws?? Or any on the NC area specifically? This is good info to know for any future trips as well.
