General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Lucy waiting for tow truck
« on: July 03, 2009, 12:29:03 pm »

Here is Lucy while we waited 2 hours for the tow truck in Drain Oregon. The clutch went out on my 95 saab and thankfully we were able to get to Drain.  And thank goodness there is a best western!! love love love best western.  We got to ride in the car on the tow truck.  There was nothing open and lucy hadn't had dinner, but there was still someone at the closed convenience store who took pity on her and gave her the left over hot dogs. This morning she dinned on pita and turkey sandwich.
I gotta say being stuck in the side of the road in the dark it sure was nice to have my big girl with me. :)
Anyone got any travel or stranded with dog stories?

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / anatolians
« on: June 27, 2009, 03:16:28 pm »
I was just wondering if anyone knows much about anatolian shepherds. Lucy has some of the physical attributes of the anatolian, longer body and narrower muzzle.  When she goes to Africa I am trying to figure out if I shouldn't look into the anatolian. My family has had pyrs for 30 years, but I don't know much about the anatolians.  I would appreciate any info.

I am turning 50 today and am now a Northwest stereotype. A slightly older  ;) woman driving around in a slightly dinged up saab convertible with a big dogs head hanging out the window.

I am almost sure that Lucy would not bite anyone, but I still don't feel comfortable letting some people pet her. You just never know what they are going to do. We have an airbrush business at a mall in a kiosk and I see really crazy stuff all day. One lady was walking her sweet little long haired chihuahua puppy and a mother asked if her little girl could pet the puppy, the woman with the pup said yes and the girl went up to the pup and slapped it with all her might. The mother started to laugh - I sort of let the mother know what I thought.  But you never know what people are going to do, or really know what your dog might do. Heck, I got my nose rearranged by the grandson of Lasie when I was ten.  Lucy hates the guy that mows the lawn and he loves dogs. Even when the the two terriers were falling all over themselves to get him to pet them, Lucy was trotting around him in a wide circle growling. I was so shocked. He is the only person I have ever seen her not like, she isn't even bothered by the people mumbling to themselves on street corners. I feel mean when I don't let people pet her. I'm just curious what others think or do.

I didn't mean to make my post sound so negative!

Positives:

Lucy is kind and gentle and just stands over the little dogs stomping her feet, when they get any chance to gobble down her food. She loves other dogs, children and adults. Is a wonderful guard dog without making me feel like she might kill someone. She is calm and a delight to take downtown to the bakery and helps me carry the bread home. And unlike tia (my jack russell rescue) she has never bit the anus of our neighbors sweet chow mix, causing horrible pain and a very large vet bill. I can once again take long walks at night and feel safe. We do tend to get lost and with my total lack of a since of direction and Lucy being a wondering breed, it is amazing we ever make it home. She is a lovely girl and a joy to come home to and along with the Tia, is always there for a hug if you had a bad day.
There, that was better.

Hi, I'm not sure this is going to work neither of my computers are letting me post.

This is just great to find some folks who are also in love with their big dogs! I live in Oregon and have a jack russell (tia), rat terrier
(jax)), and a 10 month old Pyr named Lucy. The pyr is my daughter and her fiance, but living with me because my daughter is having some health issues....noth ing she wont get better from. I will be taking the big girl back to her mama after my daughter is married and moved overseas.  In the mean time I am putting Lucy through obedience ...hahahaha. I laugh, not because she can't learn, but sometimes she cooperates and other times she just looks bored and I could swear she is rolling her eyes at me, as if to communicate - surely you jest? She is wonderful on the lead, it's the other commands that are on and off. Will not sit on command while wearing her backpack, but will plop down on her butt or lie down with no problem when we are at an outdoor cafe. She thinks it's funny to run from me when I need her to come in from the yard - so she now drags around a 20' lead. I won't even go into the barking, mainly because my daughter is going to be living in a dangerous area and we need the bark. It is going to take a lot of time to get her to stop on command.... again ....hahahaha!
I thought I wouldn't have another large dog, but I am hooked again and will be getting another pyr when Lucy leaves.
I would love to add some pics but the page wont load, so I'm trying it without pics.
Did I mention digging?
