Old English Mastiff Discussions / Shedding Supplements?
« on: March 18, 2006, 07:47:46 am »
Does anyone know of any supplement I can give my dog to help with the shedding. She is a 1 1/2 year old mastiff. She sheds more than my g.pyrenees. I feed her Nutro food. She has plenty of fur so it is not a mange problem but she really sheds bad. If she lays on the couch and gets up, there is an awful lot of hair. Maybe this is just normal. Thanks!

Great Pyrenees Discussions / Need Great Pyr help
« on: February 04, 2006, 10:59:01 pm »
I have a 2 year old gr. pyr. I have had him since he was 8 wks old. He started having agression issues when he was about 6 months old. I had him neutered he seemed to be much better. The agression I should mention is only when he gets a bone, something real good ut of the trash or there was atime when my husband whacked him on the snout for getting up on the table. He backed into a corner and growled and showed teeth. This was at 6 months old. Now he ate my daughters food she left on the counter and my husband tried to get it and yelled at him at the same time and he bit his arm no blood. He bit my foot the other day when I tried to push him away from the table after he was already chewing the food he grabbed off of it. I tried for the last time today to give him a rawhide. He seems to go into wild animal mode. He was growling at anyone who came near him and of course I was afraid to take it away. Finally I fake dhim out like I was feeding him and he dropped and I grabbed it. After that he searched the house for 20 minutes before he layed down and relaxed. It really scared me. We love him to pieces and am wondering what to do to stop this.

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / poopy problem
« on: February 04, 2006, 12:19:06 pm »
My sister just got a choc. newfie puppy about a week ago. She already has an adult bullmastiff. Anyway, the puppy has been eating his own poop. If he goes somewhere she does not see right away, he will eat it. Is there a reason for this? Is there a way to get him to stop? He is 11 weeks old. Thanks!

Old English Mastiff Discussions / Spayed today
« on: February 02, 2006, 08:46:22 pm »
Maci my 15 month old mastiff got spayed today. The vet said everything went well. I dropped her off at 8 a.m. and picked her up at 5 p.m. She is still very groggy with very droopy eyes. She has been laying down since we got home. She won't drink any water. I am giving her time but I feel so bad. My male pyr did'nt act that way when he was neutered.  She has been shaking a tiny bit like she has the chills. I have her covered with a blanket. I hope she is ok in the morning.

Old English Mastiff Discussions / Leash training?
« on: January 09, 2006, 07:15:48 pm »
I just adopted a 15 month old mastiff 2 weeks ago. She is wonderful. She is not great on a leash. Her previous owners just let her out w/o a leash in the yard. When I take the dogs for a walk she pulls w/o realizing it, she just walks along like normal put she is pulling. I also have a pyr I take on the walk too and he walks in slow motion. He is great on lead and my kids can walk him(with me). I want to be able to enjoy taking them for walks. Whats the best way to train them on a leash? She is good off leash and will stay right with you but I believe your dog should always be on a leash except in a fenced yard.

Old English Mastiff Discussions / Mastiff w/ docked Tail?
« on: January 06, 2006, 09:47:50 pm »
My sister in law has been talking with a man who has an english mastiff puppy (11 weeks) that is an apricot color with a docked tail. Is this a normal thing? I have never heard of a mastiff w/ a docked tail. She said she read up on it and if you were to show, you could still show with a docked tail. She will not be showing the dog. Just curious. Does anyone have a picture of an apricot mastiff. I have only seen apricot brindle. Thanks!

I am posting this for my sister. SHe has a 4 year old Bullmastiff. She has had him since he was a young puppy. He is a very sweet boy. Not neutered. Her problem is that he poops and pees everynight right next to his food bowl. He has always gone to the bathroom on the floor since he was young. The can't break him of this. There have been long periods (6 months) when he has not gone but then he starts again. It has been in the kitchen, the baby's room and in their bathroom. They let the dog sleep in the room with them. Once they get over it, the tie him up to the bed at night and he can't go anywhere. Any suggestions. He is healthy with no problems.

Old English Mastiff Pictures / Adopting an EM
« on: December 11, 2005, 06:24:57 pm »
I have a few questions. I am adopting (I think) a 13 month old female EM. I have a almost 2y/o g.pyrenees.  I really want my dog to have another dog around. I met this dog. She is not spayed. She will be soon after I get her. My dog is neutered. She is very skinny. They said she had an ear infection and did not eat for a few days. She probably weighs 100 lbs.  I brought her to my house to meet my dog. She was very scared. They played for a few minutes but she was scared. At her house she was very comfortable. They said she has been around other dogs before. She is about 1 inch taller than my pyr but he is 130 pounds.  There was absolutly no signs of agression out of either one of them. My questions are:
Is it normal for them to be so thin at that age. I know she will grow more.

Will she get more comfortable in my house and around my dog?

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Great Pyrenees Discussions / Just found out about bad hips
« on: November 12, 2005, 08:03:25 pm »
I just took Busa to the vet for a yeast infection in his ear. He will be 2 in December.  I told her I thought he had bad hips because he has always been pretty inactive, he has never jumped up, he won't go upstairs without almost falling etc... she did a test by sitting behind him and kind of supporting him and moved his leg a certain way. He immediatly turned his head very fast towards her. She did both sides and he acted the same way. She said he acts as if his hip area is very sore. She said she can see by the way he stands. His back legs are very straight and his toes are splayed. Anyway, he weighs 131 lbs. She said he needs to lose some weight. She said I would actually like to see him a little too thin. She told me to mix 1 cup of safflower oil and 1/4 cup flaxseed oil and add 5 tsp to his food a day. I was feeding him 4 cups of Nutro weight mgmt. a day. I am now feeding him 3 cups of Nutro weight mgmt a day and the oils. Anybody else heard of this therapy? Any other ideas? Thanks!

I have a 1 and 1/2 year old great pyr and a (?)2 year old benji type dog. My sister has a 5 year old Bullmastiff that she can't keep any more.  They have had him his whole life. I have 2 children who have always been around him (8 & 12) and she has a 3 year old and a 5 month old baby. The dog just does not realize his size and will knock her daughter over or almost trample the baby. He is an absolute sweetheart. He does not have an agressive or alpha bone in his body. He is not neutered. Both of my dogs are neutered. My pyr has shown some alpha type things only with us, not other dogs. We quickly correct him when he acts that way. He is also young. When we got the Benji dog, he just accepted him right away and we have never had a problem. I don't really know how the Bullmastiff is around other dogs. Honestly he does not get the attention he deserves from my sister. No walks or exercise and they expect him to be a perfect gentleman in the house all day. My question is: If I were to decide to take him, how would I introduce the dogs? The pyr is 130 pounds and the mastiff is 165 and all muscle. The are both very sweet but I don't know what I would do if anything happened. Any advise would be appreciated.
