Newfoundland Discussions / SoCal Newfs In Need Of A New Home?
« on: February 25, 2010, 05:28:41 pm »
Hey Everyone,

We are looking for a Newfoundland and we we live in SoCal (near the SouthBay of L.A.).  Does anyone know of a Newf who might be in need of a new home?  I have no problem contacting the Newf Club here in the area and I've heard good things about them, but I thought I'd put out feelers here first.

I've been here on BPO for awhile (not a frequent poster, but I am a frequent lurker) and we had to let our beloved Ebony last Oct.  Gut wrenching.  Both of our kids have special needs and she was AMAZING with both of them (even our Cairn terrier misses her!!).  Our daughter is on the autism spectrum and continues to struggle everyday w/out her precious Ebony by her side.  Any help or ideas (that don't cost $2000) would be GREATLY appreciated!

Newfoundland Discussions / My Ebony Is Losing Her Backside-SO Sad
« on: October 17, 2009, 04:10:59 pm »
Hi All......

Very sad today because our Newf, Ebony, is losing the use of her back legs.  Her left leg is the worst but her right leg isn't doing very well either.  She's pretty much having to pull her body up to stand from her shoulders and sometimes she can get her back legs to to cooperate and many times her legs drag behind her.  It's heartbreaking.

We LOVE our Ebony.  She's basically a therapy dog for our nine year old daughter who has autism and she's brilliant w/ our son who has T21.

I don't know what to do from here.  I took her to a vet about a month ago when she started limping and after $375, which included remadyl and a doggie "narcotic" for the pain, we didn't see much of a difference.  The vet wanted to do a sedated x-ray on her hips but we can't afford another $400 just to see what may or may not be happening.

Knew you guys here would understand.... .

Sad in SoCal,

Gigi

Newfoundland Discussions / Inside vs. Outside Sleepers: An Informal Poll
« on: August 04, 2008, 09:52:53 pm »
Do most of the Newfs here sleep inside or outside?  Just curious.....I'm the kind of person who loves the company of my Newf so having her in our bedroom at night is not an intrusion from my point of view.  (course I'm the kind of person who also had two Westies & a Cairn sleep on the bed with us and I thought that was just fine).

Just wondered what other folks do......

Newfoundland Discussions / Any L.A. Newfs Here??
« on: August 02, 2008, 11:13:44 pm »
Hi Everyone.....w e're moving to L.A. in the next couple of weeks and were wondering if there are any Newfs in the Redondo Beach/Torrance area??  If so, we'd love to meet you and your humans!

Ebony is about 6 years old (we rescued her so we're not exactly sure how old she is) and she's a petite Newf-only 107lbs.  She's super friendly and is a mama's girl.

We're looking forward to our big move and hope to meet some fellow Newfs on the beach sometime soon!!

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Doggies In Tacoma--Clean Up!!
« on: February 11, 2008, 12:24:48 pm »
I just took our Newf to a "do it yourself" doggie bathing place last week in Tacoma, WA and I thought I'd let everyone here know about it. It's called "Shampooch" on 6th Avenue...just west of downtown Tacoma and it's very reasonable:  Only $20 for a Newf!!  (compared to over $80 at a national pet retailer/grooming shop), with the prices going down from there.....

Anyway, they provide the blowers, the towels, the shampoo and grooming supplies. I think it's a great deal!

Treatment & Preventative Meds / ??How Do I Know WHAT It Is??
« on: September 01, 2007, 08:18:04 am »
Since yesterday afternoon (Fri. 8/31), our Newf, Ebony, has lost CHUNKS of fur off her backside because she has been chewing herself RAW.  Last night there was one "hot spot" on her rump, now tonight we can see another couple developing.  We're really worried.

Question:  how do I know IF it's fleas? I'm assuming it is and that she's digging at the bites.  How do I know if it's worms??

After a too-long hiatus from using Frontline, we did apply it last night, but after reading a bunch of posts here I'm reminded that it's not an "instant cure".

We need some help and insight!  Thanks!

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Natural Way To Deal With Worms?
« on: February 25, 2006, 02:24:16 am »
Came home this evening and found that Ebony had made a "mistake" in the house.  Turns out her poo was rife with little white worms...about the size of a grain of rice.  So I'm glad I saw it..now we know what we're dealing with.

I searched the archives here but couldn't find anything on dealing with homeopathicall y or naturally, with herbs, vitamins or naturally occuring antiobitics.

Any ideas?  Taking her to the vet is not a problem, I just don't want to strip her body of her natural immunities while getting rid of the parasite.

Definitely want to get this solved quickly so she can be healthy and also....so we can find her a foster family for her.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Anyone Seen My Post?
« on: February 24, 2006, 02:04:29 am »
About finding Ebony, our Newf, a foster home?  I can't seem to find that post anywhere around here (it's probably rght where it belongs and that's why I can't find it) and I was wondering if anyone had replied recently.

If you look under Newf photos, I finally got around to adding some new ones of Ebony....who has great bedside manner/drool when you're on the couch for three days with the flu!

Take Care,  Gigi

Newfoundland Pictures / Photos Of Ebony
« on: February 24, 2006, 01:33:37 am »
As promised earlier in the week, and before I came down with the flu for the past three days, here are some photos of Ebony.

I'm kind of known as a Techno-Schlub so let's see if I can do this without breaking anything.....

Helpful Groups & Dogs in Need / Help! My Newf Needs A New Home
« on: February 18, 2006, 03:07:14 am »
 :(

I've been a member here for a few months and have really enjoyed the boards here.  I haven't contributed a whole lot but I really need everyone's help today.  Our situation is that we relocated to the Tacoma, WA area last summer and brought our dogs with us.  Unfortunately we coulodn't have our dogs with us where we're staying so our Newf, Ebony, and our two terriers (Angus & Allie) have been staying with my cousin nearby for the past few months.

Without getting into the sordid details (all human in nature), my cousin's husband informed me yesterday morning that he wants all the dogs gone immediately.  We are currently living in a situation where dogs are not allowed, and that's why my cousin has been housing them (my cousin loves the dogs and does NOT want them gone out of her house but, unfortunately her husband does want them gone and he pays 1/2 the mortgage).  He told me yesterday morning we have until 2/26/06 (a week from tomorrow) to have our dogs out of his house.

The best case scenario is that in one week my whole familyl, plus our fabulous dogs will have a new place to live (I'm a personal chef and would gladly cook for the family who's willing to house us and my husband restores old houses and does general handyman/contracting stuff).  But barring that amazing miracle, we need to find a new home for Ebony, Allie & Angus immediately.

I would like to find someone in the Tacoma, WA area.  The dogs do not have to be placed together and we can totally understand why someone wouldn't want a Newf + two terriers (it's a crazy/fun combination!).

We need a miracle.  This whole situation is beyond surreal to me and cannot even believe that I am sitting here typing this request.  Letting my dogs go anywhere but with me is THE LAST thing I want to do but we're not sure what else we can do.

Maybe there are some friends here we haven't met yet.  Please speak up with any ideas or suggestions.  We had dogs long, long before we ever considered having children with skin. They are our babies and we have been through SO much together.  Any and all ideas are welcome.  Thanks for reading this.

Meet & Greet BPOers / Newfs & Other Big Paws In Tacoma?
« on: September 06, 2005, 11:15:28 pm »
Any Newfs in the Tacoma, WA area?  Love to meet some other Newfs....and anyone else for that matter!  Also want to know if there are any Newf clubs in the south Puget Sound area where Newfs can learn how to do what Newfs do best....water and rescue work.

I knew the day was coming when this would happen.  And I know that a Cairn isn't exactly a "Big Paw" dog by anyone's standards (!!) but the story does include a BigPaw and I just had to share this latest drama in the lives of our furry children.

Some background:  we are currently relocating to another state and can not have our four four-leggeds with us at the house we are staying (anyone know a great deal on a house in Pierce County, WA??).  Fortunately through the generosity of one of my cousin's who LOVES dogs, our four loves have a great temporary home.  My cousin and her husband have a rottie/pitbull mix who is a total love and they have a rottie/lab mix who is equally wonderful.  We have a Newf (Ebony), two Westies and Angus, the Evil Cairn.

Yestereay afternoon after my cousin got home from work she sat down at the table to eat and Angus took what has become his "usual" position when she eats:  under her chair to ward off all intruders and interlopers.  Well apparently he was being himself when Zeke, the rottie/lab mix had just had enough of Angus' bravado and machismo and went for Angus' throat to settle the issue.

My cousin was able to pull off her dog from on top of Angus and Angus is now missing a three inch area of fur from the front part of his leg, near his shoulder.  He's bleeding a bit but as of last night there was no swelling or discoloration.  His attitude was definetely subdued.  We'll see if that lasts (hah, like that would ever be long-term in a terrier!!).

Introduce Yourself to the Forum / New Member Introduction
« on: August 08, 2005, 10:50:59 pm »
Hi...So glad I found this place!!  Someone had the foresight to put this website on craigslist and there I was the other night seeing what was going on on the pet pages of craigslist and "Big Paws Only" sounded so intriguing.... .

So here I am....I am Gigi, a mom of two terrific kiddos and I'm a HUGE dog lover.  We are owned by three terriers (two Westies and an evil Cairn) and a beautiful Newfoundland named Ebony.  They bring us much joy and happiness and laughter.  But I'm walking around with a huge hole in my heart as our Great Pyrennes died about a month ago.  She was the best girl in the world and the source of tremendous joy.  Sadie will always live in our hearts.  More on her at another time when I'm more composed to talk about her.

But it's great to be here, with other like-minded and like-hearted dog lovers.  We are in the process of moving back "home" for me, to the Tacoma, WA area.  If there are any Newf owners around here, I'd love to meet you!  What am I saying??  If there are any big dog lovers around here, I'd love to meet you!

Hope you enjoy the photos!!
