Saint Bernard General Discussions / We got our second Saint
« on: February 27, 2007, 12:33:36 am »
We just got Pete a couple of weeks ago.  He is an 18 mo. old male that we got from a rescue organization.  He had been starved, left out in a small pen with no shelter and apparently physically abused (we have found 3 sets of scars under his fur).  He was also losing his fur due to the stress.

Since we got him his fur is recovering nicely although he doesn't have the thick winter coat our other Saint has, he is putting on weight and his real personality is now coming out (he was quite fearful before). He is a lover and has one of the sweetest personalities I've ever seen. He doesn't have an aggressive bone in his body and loves to play with Josh, our other Saint.

I am always baffled that anyone could abuse such sweet dogs.

I'll post some pictures when I have time to take them.

Saint Bernard General Discussions / How much do you feed your adult Saint?
« on: February 27, 2007, 12:17:15 am »
We have a problem with our 3 year old Josh putting on too much weight.  We feed him 1 cup of Eukanuba Lamb & Rice Large Breed for breakfast and 3 cups for supper. This is a reduction from his puppy diet of 3 cups and 3 cups. He is pushing 200 lbs.
I asked the breeder how much he fed his dogs and he said 5 cups for breakfast and 5 for supper.  I couldn't believe it.

Josh is naturally a big boy.  He has a huge head and  paws (much bigger than our other Saint) which has nothing to do with fat so I expect him to weigh more.  But the vet thinks he needs to lose about 20 lbs.  Any suggestions?

Saint Bernard General Discussions / Josh has hip dysplasia
« on: December 06, 2005, 09:01:21 pm »
We just got back from the vet where Josh was x-rayed because I thought that when he walked, his gait was a bit strange.  He has dysplasia in both hips and his left front elbow.  We are a bit beside ourselves at the moment.

Has anyone here gone through this and what did you do about it?  Is there any truly effective treatment?  the vet has prescribed anti-inflamatories and mentioned the the vet college at the state university does hip replacements but had little more than that to offer. We have no intention of putting him down unless it ends up being the very last humane thing to do.

Josh can walk and hopefully will continue to be able to do so.  Anyone's experiences with this would be very helpful.

We love Josh and he loves us and we want to do whatever is possible for him.

Thanks

We currently have Josh, a 1 year old Saint Bernard.  We are considering getting a second dog but are not sure what would be a good companion to Josh.  Obviously another Saint would be a good choice but we would like to consider other breeds too.  My primary concern is that Josh is so big (150 lbs. and still growing) that he could easily injure a smaller dog just playing.  Josh is very friendly and loves to play with other dogs.

Does anyone have experience with multiple dogs where one is a giant breed? Am I being too conservative here?
