Great Pyrenees Discussions / Sadie's 1st Birthday!!!
« on: March 31, 2006, 09:11:34 am »
Hi guys, I haven't been on much lately, but I wanted to let everyone know that my baby is one year old today.  :)
AND, my dear husband and I have found out we are expecting our first child in November. No wonder I've been so stinking tired lately...LOL
So anyway, my mother is scared out of her mind that Sadie is going to maul our new baby over because she's such a beast!! I need some ammo to hit her back with, so all of you Pyr owners, tell me how great they are with kids  :P

Great Pyrenees Discussions / Questions!!
« on: March 06, 2006, 01:39:07 pm »
Ok, Sadie will be 1 year on the 31st...I've noticed that she doesn't want to eat as much as she used to lately. She only wants to eat about once a day now whereas when she was younger she'd eat twice a day. Is this normal? We just switched her over from puppy food to dog food a few weeks ago. I don't want to panic if it's normal for her appetite to change from age and not something else.
Also, her ears seem to have been bothering her the last week. She's constantly shaking her head, and they smell pretty bad!!  I've got the ear cleaner stuff from Petsmart, but the vet told me when she was younger that she'd be prone to yeast infections because most floppy earred dogs are...so is it most likely a yeast infection? I cleaned her ears out with the cleaner, which she absolutely detests, and for a day or so it got better but now it's back. Oh yeah, and her eyes are leaking this yellowish guck. Maybe the ears and eyes are related? Short of an intestinal bug, this is the only thing that's been wrong with her since we got her. I need advice :-)

So I thought I'd give Sadie something to make her a little more comfortable while she had to spend a few hours in her cage........

I had no idea she'd commit murder.   :o

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Sick puppy, need advice
« on: January 04, 2006, 12:01:00 pm »
I know I should be calling my vet right now, but you guys are just as good as they are in my opinion. Here's the story:  Sadie was boarded over Christmas weekend, came home Monday after x-mas and began vomitting/diahrrea.  48 hours later we took her to the vet, she had lost 5 lbs but she was acting pretty normal. He listened to her bowels and said she had an intestinal virus or something like that.  He prescribed Metro-something pills, told us to fast her for 24 hours, then strictly rice/chicken/ground turkey for a week. Ok, that's all done, but she has barely eaten for a week which means she has barely pooped too, and this morning after she did eat her normal food again, she vomitted. I assume it's time for another vet visit? I can't have her not eating/drinking and when she does, vomitting!! Any other ideas? Do you think she just needs another round of meds?

Great Pyrenees Discussions / Advice on Border Collies?
« on: December 05, 2005, 09:47:18 am »
We are interested in looking for our next dog soon.  Sadie is 8 months and is starting to act less puppy-like and more dog-like (thank goodness).  We want her to have someone to play with, so we were thinking of a border collie.  I am asking for advice from anyone who knows these breeds.  Can Pyrs and Borders work and play well together?  We'd be willing to take either a puppy or a rescue.  I know they are extremely intelligent and trainable.  If anyone has recommendation s for another good match for a Pyr we're open to suggestions too.  I already tried for another Pyr, but hubby put the ax to that plan.  :-(
Thanks!!

Great Pyrenees Discussions / My proudest dog-mom day
« on: November 12, 2005, 09:48:04 am »
There is a 2-acre off leash dog park here in Cincy, and I've been dying to take Sadie while it's still warm out.  So I convinced hubby to go with me yesterday, and it was the greatest time we've both had with Sadie since we got her.  At first, I was leary to let her off the leash, just because I worried that she'd run off (even though it's completely fenced in) and never come back to us!!  Everyone at the park kept telling us to just let her off so she could play with the others and roam free, so after about half an hour, we did.  She did so well, I am still in shock.  She exceeded any expectations I had of her by far.  Of course, I followed her around like a puppy for a while, but then we just had fun playing with the other dogs, watching her out of the corner of our eyes.  She played and romped and rolled in the only muddy area there and got totally filthy, but by the time we left, she was white again, go figure!!  I just had to share, it almost brings a tear to my eye, after all of the struggling we've gone through over the last few months with her behavior, I finally saw a glimpse of what she will become.
And the best part of all, she was as pooped as a toddler would have been in a romper room when we got home!!! LOL
Thanks for listening guys :-)

Great Pyrenees Discussions / I got snapped at this morning
« on: October 20, 2005, 09:15:39 pm »
Lately bedtime is becoming a difficult time for Sadie.  She does not want to go in her cage in the morning when I need to leave for work.  She runs away from me, tries to hide, etc.  I always say, "Sadie, go to bed", and as soon as she hears that she acts like a different dog.  And it's just been recently she started doing this.  So, a few weeks ago was the first time she snapped at me when I grabbed for her collar, to lead her downstairs.  It really shocked me and I immediately smacked her mouth and said "no bite".  I couldn't tell if she really had intentions of biting me, or, well, I don't know what I thought.  So this morning, here we go again, I told her to go to bed, she ran away from me, I said it louder several more times, and she rolled over on her back!! Cute, but not what I was going for.  So, I grabbed her collar to try and lead her, and she beared her teeth and went right for my hand.  Instinctively, I smacked her mouth and yelled "no bite" again, but I had to walk away because I was so in shock.  I really believe she would have bitten me if I hadn't jerked my hand away.  I am so upset over this, she never shows signs of aggression toward anything else.  I know it's a bad thing when a Pyr is aggressive.  I'm not sure if this is true aggression or just her way of telling me she doesn't want to go to bed.  I'm counting on my Pyr people (and anyone else!!!) to give me some advice here!!

Great Pyrenees Discussions / Sadie ate a Nylabone and ....
« on: September 26, 2005, 05:00:23 am »
She puked it up, I think, in her cage while we were at work.  She got the bone last night and befofe I knew it, she had eaten the whole thing.  We gave her a puppy one, and I didn't think she'd be able to actually eat it, but alas.  HELP!  Was she supposed to actually digest it?  I feel so stupid that she puked.

Great Pyrenees Discussions / Are we too late?
« on: September 08, 2005, 06:30:16 am »
First time poster here!  We have a Pyr named Sadie, she's 5 1/2 months old, and honestly she is hard to handle for both my husband and I.  We brought her home at 8 weeks from the breeder, and I think we were expecting her to be different than she is.  I take full responsibility for not knowing everything about how to raise any dog, let alone a Pyr.  But that doesn't mean I haven't tried!  She is constantly underfoot, sticking her face in every part of our bodies, digging in every trash can in the house, trying to eat our cat, chewing up her blankets, and every time we let her out in the backyard, she immediately finds wood to chew on.  And she doesn't just chew on it, she actually eats it if we're not watching her every move.  Ok, I honestly do love this dog, she is absolutely beautiful and sweet, but she doesn't seem to learn anything!  She knows sit, shake and lay down, without having any obedience training (which I regret now).  Is it too late to do something about this behavior, or is this...normal?  She reacts equally to both my husband and I.  We share the responsibiliti es of feeding, watering, potty time and walking.  My husband has only ever owned Labs, and he's super frustrated!  I keep telling him, "she's not a lab"...but I think he's more frustrated just with the fact that he doesn't think she even acts like a dog (i.e., she practices "selective deafness", does whatever she wants).  I really want to make this work, and if anyone out there wants to reprimand me for having done something wrong, I'll take it!  I just want her to be a part of our family, without all the frustration that we feel right now.  Thanks for any advice!
