Medical Conditions & Diseases / Iz is Healthy ... No EPI!
« on: February 01, 2006, 10:48:17 pm »
Just got the results and he does not have EPI! The vet thinks he just had a bad case of Hooks. He seems all normal now - we are thrilled. Thanks to all for advice and support....

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Update on IZ - Anyone else have EPI ?
« on: January 22, 2006, 09:36:19 pm »
We went to the vet today. They are tesing him for EPI (Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency). They had to send the blood screen out and we won't know for 7 days or so. He tested negative for Hooks today - but he would after 12 days on Panacur. This is very concerning to us as he is still such a baby. Anyone else experience EPI before? Anything anyone can share?

Medical Conditions & Diseases / It's now a $900 Tummy-ache
« on: January 21, 2006, 05:06:53 pm »
Several of you may have been following my previous posting (the $300 tummy-ache). Our saga continues and I'm looking for some Big PAws advice.
Iz is 15 weeks old (I must update this photo). He has had terrible diarreha since before Christmas. Two weeks ago, he was FIANLLY diagnosed with Hooks and started on Panacure de-wormer for 6 days. Also at this time, our vet started him on a new diet since he was so underweight (he had been eating rice for a while). The new diet consists of Fromm Chicken a la Veg for AM and PM. Lunch is oatmeal mixed with yogurt and bedtime snack is banana and canned pumpkin with a littel chicken mixed in. He did GREAT... until day 8 and the diarreha came back full force. The vet started him back on the panacure - we're on day 5 now - and he still has terrible diarreha. We're on the same diet. Other than this - he is great - plays, drinks, sleeps etc....
In the first round of panacure, he started to gain weight, but now he has stalled again.
We are VERY concerned and VERY frustrated - any thoughts???

As many of you know Iz was recently sick and is still recovering from Hook Worm. BUT - we have a new dilemma. He barks non-stop in his crate at night. Last night I gave him his bedtime snack (part of the new diet) in his crate in case he needed to be reminded that the crate was a good place. He barked for 30 minutes and pooped (probably my fault for missing the signals). We slept until 2 AM - he had to go out - when back in his crate - he wouldn't stop barking. In order to get some sleep - I put him in the kitchen. He's quiet in there for 1.5 - 2 hour intervals - but then barks - and when taken out - really does pee.
Ideally I want him sleeping in the crate - he's too young to be in the kitchen alone at night (15 weeks).
We could move the crate - BUT there are times he really needs to go and I'm afraid we won't hear him if we move it and he really needs to go out.
Also - at times in the morning - or during the day, if I need to do things in the other parts of the house - I put him in the kitchen. He has now started barking and barking unless I am in there with him.
HELP - I'm exhausted.

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Anyone else experience a $300 tummy-ache?
« on: December 29, 2005, 09:24:26 am »
Hi all - our 13-week old Newf is having tummy trouble. Grainy VERY loose stool, and he has thrown up 5 times in the last 48 hours. We took him to the vet on the first day. They did x-rays - no obstruction (thank God), and she said he was filled with gas. His fever was 105 and his blood work was a little all over the place. The vet said his GI tract was all "confused" and we needed to calm everything down. (don;t really know the cause - we did have him on a new diet of Wellness). She prescribed an anti-biotic given with yogurt, gas-x, a diet of rice mixed with tuna for a week. I'm worried because he still has diareha, threw up last night - and his tummy is still making horrible sounds. Anyone else experince this??? Am I just an impatient Mommy?

Discussions & Information on Grooming / Which Blower should we buy??
« on: December 28, 2005, 11:53:37 pm »
Looking for advice from our new Big Paw family. Iz is a 13 weeks old Newf - has terrible "potty manners" and has had 4 baths in the 4 weeks we have had him home. (Why do they walk in poop???) It's time for us to get a blower (it takes forevever to try him). What do you all recommend and more importantly - where to buy it? Our breeder uses the K-9 - pretty expensive! At this point - we are sparing nothing for our new "baby" and want to do what's right. We plan to show him - so this will be a necessity down the line.

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / He has become a Pee-Machine
« on: December 14, 2005, 10:41:29 pm »
Hi there - me again! He was doing pretty well during the day - asking to go outside etc. I had to travel this week and my husband was alone with Iz for the first time. Both yesterday and today - he has become a Pee-Machine in our kitchen. I retruned tonight and it's amazing. He is SITTING, staring at me - he gets up and walks away - and there is a puddle. I have never known a dog to pee while he is sitting in a normal sit position. He peed 3 times in the kitchen in 15 minutes! How can a dog possibly have to go this much? I think he's too young for this to be because I was gone (we've only had him 2 1/2 weeks). Is it normal to backslide in housetraining? Could it be a UTI? He seems to feel fine.... I use Pet Enzyme every time ....

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Help, I'm not getting any sleep!
« on: December 12, 2005, 07:48:20 am »
Iz is 11 weeks old (24 pounds). He is doing "okay" with housetraining. He asks to go outside sometimes, (never while he is on carpet of course :)). At night, he sleeps in a crate in our bedroom. He enters the crate fine -  and goes to sleep. He wakes about 4 hours later and needs to go out. All of this is fine...so far. After I take him out that first time during the night (normally around 2 ish)  he wants to go out every hour. He generally pees each time, but he also grabs the leash, rolls in the snow and romps around. I sternly correct and immediately bring him back inside while he tries to play. We go back in the crate - and we start over again in an hour. How do I teach him he can hold it? How do I get him to not play too? His max in the crate seems to be 4 hours. He on occassion will pee in the crate while we are out. (but generally at the 4 hour mark). I don't mind getting up once - but this 4 and 5 times has got to go.....

Food Discussion & Information / How FAst is Fast growth?
« on: December 08, 2005, 07:43:37 am »
It's the new member again, IZ, and thanks to all for the suggestions so far. This forum is very helpful. I have read from several of you to not let them grow too fast. What is too fast? We have had IZ now for 12 days. He has gained 7.5 pounds since we brought him home. That seems A LOT to us, but this is our first Newf and we don't really know if this is common or not. He is 11 weeks old (12 on Monday). We've been feeding Pro-Plan LArge Breed puppy - but will start our home-cooked diet this weekend. Thoughts?

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / STOP - my Newf takes me for a walk!!!
« on: December 07, 2005, 08:13:56 am »
I have a new newf, named IZ - 10 weeks old. He will walk on the leash - but he started putting the leash in his mouth and appears to "take himself for a walk". Yes, very cute the first few times. Now I have a problem - we can't get him to stop!!! This will eventually be a problem. Our trainer told us to grap his snout and sternly say "NO" ... but that has NO AFFECT. Any Big Paw suggestions????

Food Discussion & Information / What to feed our Newfie???
« on: December 06, 2005, 09:04:10 pm »
I am new to Big Paws - love it!!! We just brought home our first Newfie - named IZ - he's 10 weeks old. We are stumped on what to feed. We are totally against the commercial/grocery store foods. We think the Raw diet too dangerous; the "organic foods" still have chemicals. We found a book by William Cusick with a specifc diet you cook at home for a Newfoundland. (He also writes books for other breeds - he has a website). Has anyone tried this diet? Any thoughts? Our last dog (Golden retriever) died of cancer - and we will do ANYTHING to keep our new boy healthy! :)
