Well hello all.  Boo and I have been very busy and haven't been on here in forever!  Boo is doing well but we're adding a new member to our furry family tomorrow and I have lots of questions  ;D.  First off, I'm pretty sure I need to introduce them out of her territory to begin with, but what else can I do to make the transition easier for both?  Eli is a rescue and he's a Pharaoh hound mix.  He's young too, only about a year or so.  He's neutered too.  Also, what is everyone's view on finally letting Boo have run of the house during the day and leaving Eli in the crate?  Does anyone have one dog in, one dog out?

Introduce Yourself to the Forum / Introducing Maiden

This is DH's dog Maiden.  She's an American Bulldog/AmStaff mix.  Isn't she cute!! :D  She has the cutest little smooshy face (I smoosh it all the time!)  And she's way more my dog than his.  That's probably because I let her get away with everything!  C'mon, with a face like that how can you say no?

Holiday Things / Halloween costume

Ok, I totally realize that its August, but I like to think ahead.  Has anyone ever dressed their dog up for Halloween and where did you get the costume??  It would be for Boo so it would have to be rather large. ;D

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Grrrrr.....Boo
« on: July 27, 2006, 07:32:55 am »
Ok, just a quick background on whats going on and why I need advice.  DH and I were separated for a while and recently got back together.  Well I have Boo and he has a female, unspayed American Bulldog/Pitbull mix who is only a few months older than Boo.  So in the beginning (of the two dogs getting together) Boo didn't really want to play that much with this other strange dog and just wanted to lay around (which she had started doing a lot of anyway recently).  Now like two months later this whole dynamic has changed A LOT! :o  I at first thought that Maiden (DH's dog) was alpha, but now I'm not so sure.  The tables have turned and now Maiden just wants to sit around and Boo is constantly harassing her.  Always nipping at her ears, neck, back or whatever is available.  Maiden wants no part of this and has decided she's going to hide with me whenever Boo is driving her nuts, which is every day.  This morning I caught Boo with her mouth around Maiden's neck and Maiden on her back.  So who is alpha (besides me)?  Maiden gets really ornery if Boo gets too close to me while I'm doling out their dinner and will growl at her and give her a warning nip, but that's all she seems to do to her.  Then this morning Boo had her by the neck.  There is more to it also, like Boo constantly being in trouble doing things she never did before, or just did them rarely.  I'm talking things like her getting into the garbage, chewing our daughters toys, barking at me, constantly begging food.  Ok, even more, sorry this is a book here.  The two of them when they do get going and Maiden wants to play, go rampaging thru the house to the tune of almost knocking out an air conditioner in a second floor window.  Boo instigates most of this and will try and keep Maiden going with her.  If I put the two of them outside they flop on the ground because its been so hot.  Soooooo....any ideas on how to deal with two demon dogs??  ???

So we were back at the vet again last night for what was first diagnosed as a urinary infection.  Might not be so.  Here's the gross part.  Boo has been instances of mucous (greenish-yellow) coming out of her (and I'm assuming its the same for dogs here) vagina.  I know its still happening because I can see (after the fact) where's its dried on her leg.  She was first on Ceph-something and now the vet has put her on Clavamox, which just happens to be outrageously expensive too.  :o  So the vet says, "Well it could be a UTI or vaginitis or an internal infection."  Ok, that kinda leaves it open for a lot of stuff there.  She also wants me to try and get a "sample".  Uhhhhh....and you'd like me to do that how??  Needless to say I'm upset with the vet for leaving this wide open.  Any ideas on what else this may be?  I paid $56 for a weeks worth of antibiotics and don't want to have to keep doing that because the vet is just throwing anything out there.

Medical Conditions & Diseases / UTI Questions

Boo was just diagnosed with a UTI.  Is this a common thing in big dogs?  Is there something I can do to prevent it from happening again?

Medical Conditions & Diseases / I'm freaking out here
« on: April 23, 2006, 09:27:29 pm »
Yesterday I was looking at Boo head on and noticed it looked like she was smuggling something under her one lip.  So I go over, open her mouth up and nothing is there.  Turns out she has a 3/4 inch lump under her skin under her whiskers.  I checked the inside of her lip and the skin was pink and not a different color behind the lump.  My mom said her cat has something like that but it turned out to be a water-filled cyst.  I felt around the lump and the lump itself and its pretty hard.  It also doesn't appear that one of her whisker (pores??) is infected.  Any ideas??

And we now have solid poops!!!!  Its only taken months to get to this point.  We went thru all the vet's suggestions and nothing worked.  We always had sloppy poos.  Not any more  ;D  I've never been so excited to take Boo out to go than I am now.  I know you can't see, but I'm doing to solid poopy dance right now!

I'm chalking it up to adolescent punk puppy stage, but I want to put it out there just in case I'm missing something.
1.  When my daughter and I are eating, she has a bad habit of trying to take food off our plates.  When she does this I either give her the "no" sign or push her away.  This then escalates into her growling then barking in my face.  (not a mean bark, just barking)  At this point my ears are ringing b/c she barks so loudly.  So I get up and she runs away with her tail going two-forty like its play time.  Its not and I put her in her crate for a time out.  A minute later I'll let her out and she does the same thing.  I've tried showing teeth and growling, the "no" sign and the time out and none of it seems to work.

2.  She tries to get between me and the counter when I'm making dinner and is generally trying to push me away.  So I get in her face and stand over her and back her up.  Has no effect and two seconds later she's back at it.

3.  She has a bad habit of chasing leaves when I take her out to go potty.  I don't put her Halti on her to go, just her leash and regular collar.  She basically pulls me where she wants to go and ignores any sign I make to her.  Should I use a choke collar to bring her out to go pee?  And she suddenly just stops dead and start sniffing the sidewalk, stairs, door, grass etc. and won't move.  I have to actually take her by the collar to even budge her.  And then it usually turns into a tugging match.

So, is my Boo just being a punk a** lately or are there more problems here.  She's in intermediate obedience and is doing really well.  She's devil child at home.  Maybe I should have PM'ed Moni about this.  Ok, Moni if you read this, HELP!!   ;D  And if anyone else has any input, I'd sure like it.

Collars, crates, & other cool things / Doggles
« on: March 27, 2006, 02:40:26 pm »
Does anyone use Doggles?  And if you do, do you and your furkid like them?  I'm thinking about getting a pair for Boo.  An optician in my area actually carries them so I'd be able to fit her right away.

Great Dane Discussions / Young Danes and Running
« on: March 24, 2006, 08:03:52 am »
Boo will me 9 months old the end of this month and I'd like to be able to do more exercise with her besides just a walk.  I know that her bones are still growing and I believe I've heard or read somewhere that you shouldn't really "exercise" them till at least a year old.  Is this true?  Would it be a bad idea to take her on a run with me?  I'm trying to get my fat butt in shape for summer and  would like her to come along.  Any ideas?

Treatment & Preventative Meds / Boo is being spayed today
« on: March 14, 2006, 09:11:29 am »
My little girl is going under the knife today.  I'm pretty ok with it.  Its the after part I'm worried about.  I made sure they're going to give her a prescription for pain meds.  I feel so bad.  She was freaking out in the vet's office.  But it has to be done. :(
