Medical Conditions & Diseases / YUK - ripped pads off!
« on: March 13, 2009, 02:33:47 am »
Teddy's little sheep escapade the other day did him some damage.  Seems he's ripped the black covering off both the pads on his front feet at the back of the foot.  The pads with the nails are fine. (a pic is worth 1000 words - I've circled the area I'm talking about - its both feet - Owww!!!)

Raw, pink yukky stuff exposed.  So far, I've just put some polysporin on it.  Think I'm going to head to the local farm supply and get some type of topical cream or spray (something that might stay on a little longer).

Anyone else dog's ever have that?  What did you do for it?

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Next time he will be SHOT!
« on: March 12, 2009, 12:41:53 am »
Teddy has decided that the underground fencing isn't enough of a deterent to keep him from playing with the neighbours sheep.

Yesterday, he went to their house and was galloping around in the sheep pen - didn't hurt any of them except for running them around.  Unfortunately, they are all pregnant and that is how our neighbours make their living.  If any of the sheep abort their lambs over the next few days, we are responsible.

She came and got Trevor yesterday (after she tried to catch him and Teddy thought it was a big game), and thank goodness he was home!  But.....she said that if their is a next time, she may not be able to do that (I totally get her point, if she cant catch him and he's running her sheep, she would have to do something to prtect her livelihood).

So, Teddy is back to being on the leash to go potty.  No going outside to play, nothing.  Tonight we are going to shave his neck and re-check his shock fencing collar.  Maybe new batteries will fix the running away?  Sure hoping so!!

I'm feeling kinda crappy about it today.  Sure hope her sheep are OK.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / I'm a terrible Big Paw Mom......
« on: September 09, 2008, 11:24:32 am »
So, here's the scoop.  We just built a brand new house and the humans have been living in it for two glorious weeks now.  The cat (Lola) and Teddy are still living in the trailer (we lived in a 35 ft trailer( no bathroom, no running water) on the property all summer with 4 kids and the pets!).  The weather this year has been great so we just tied Teddy out all day and he came into the trailer every evening with us.

Now, its time to move the pets into the house......... but I kinda like living without the hair and the drool.  The carpetting is clean, the floor is drool free, there is no hair in my food or on the couch, etc.  I feel so terrible.  Teddy is never going anywhere but here, but I feel like I'm betraying him by thinking of confining him to only one floor, or to only one room while we are gone.

Anyone have any suggestions for making my new house feel new for a while longer, even after the drooly hairball moves in?  Or do I just need to "suck it up Sunshine" and just deal with it, its Teddy's house too.

Anyone else go through this??

Treatment & Preventative Meds / Spare a good thought for Teddy today
« on: August 14, 2008, 07:11:23 am »
Hi Guys, I know we haven't been on much, but Teddy needs a little of BPO's support today.

He is at the vets to be put under sedation to have his ear flushed.  He has chronic ear infection in his one ear and it has gotten so bad that antibiotics, steriods, and topical medications aren't working. You can see the puss oozing out of it, even after a weeks worth od treatment.

The vet has sent a culture away to see what other types of antibiotics we can try, but he thinks we may have a strain that is resistant to antibiotics.  Not sure what the next treatment will be.  Hopefully the flushing will help.

Just thought I'd ask for a little bit of good thoughts for Teddy today while he's in dreamland...  Thanks!

« on: June 20, 2008, 02:01:39 pm »
Hi Everyone!  *waves madly across cyberspace*

Been super busy lately - my BF and I are building a house!  Were doing it all ourselves!  I'm really surprised how quickly its going though!  Teddy LOVES having 5 acres to run and play with his kids!

Just thought I'd pop in and share a couple recent pics of my Teddy.  He's almost 2.5 yrs now and really starting to fill out.  He's such a sweetie, and like most saints, still thinks he'a a lapdog!

Anything Non-Dog Related / Teddy got a kitty!
« on: December 18, 2007, 03:46:50 pm »
Meet Lola, Teddy's new fur-sister.

We just picked her up last night from a pet rescue.  She is THE sweetest cat ever, loves to be held and petted and seems to adore the kids.  She loves everyone - even Teddy!  They first met this morning and she was rubbing against him and only gave one little hiss when he got  really pushy about sniffing her.  I think they are going to be the best of friends!

Anything Non-Dog Related / NDR: Fostering Kitties
« on: November 30, 2007, 12:28:14 am »
I'm sort of on the fence about this.  I'd really love to help, but don't know what it would be like bringing in different kitties and maybe getting stuck for a long time with one that wasn't a great fit for our family.

There were 2 little 5 wk old kitties that were going to be euthenized if they didn't find a foster home by tomorrow (luckily someone already adopted them!) so I offered to help.   But since those ones are OK now they asked if I would foster a couple others and I'm just not sure.

Anyone have any experiences that want to share with me.  Maybe something to get me off the fence??

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Re-curring ear infections
« on: November 01, 2007, 02:00:03 pm »
I need your knowledge, experience, and or whatever you can provide BPO!!

Teddy has had 4 ear infections in the last 1.5 yrs.

Last one was about 3 weeks ago and the vet was pretty aggressive about the meds she gave him (still weaning off sterroids right now) so we really thought we weould kick it this time.  No go.  He's back to shaking his head again and REALLY lovin' his ear rubs = infection.

Anyone have any experience with re-curring ear infections?  Did you ever get rid of it?  What worked?

Help BPO!!  My big baby feels ickky all the time and I don't like it one bit!!

Treatment & Preventative Meds / Yukky ears - Poor Teddy! What can I do?
« on: October 08, 2007, 10:58:47 am »
He had an infection awhile ago and we went to the vet and it cleaned up but seems he has it again - this time quite bad.  I clean his ears with a papertowel and get the brown liquid out as much as I can (also been treating with some leftover meds from last time but its not helping).  I'm going to make anther vet appt today.

Is there a REALLY good way to clean out his ears?  Anything I can do to help relieve the pain for him?
Any home medications for prevention? Treatment?

I just want make it better for my big guy.  Any and all suggestions are welcome!!

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / You should have seen him! LOL!
« on: September 27, 2007, 10:23:14 am »
Teddy tried out the obstacle course last night!  We weren't invited to the class because she thought he would be too big (nad I think she's mostly right) but we went and watched for a while and then got to try out some of the stuff!

We did the table like he had been doing it his whole life, same with the frame (though it was a 1/2 size version for training).  He wasn't too sure about the teeter, but did it anyway like a trooper!  Had a lot of fun with the jumps and the tire!  Had some trouble with the shute but we got him to go through the stiff part of it - though he had to get all the way down and crawl through it!  Teddy had a blast!!!  It was a lot of fun and we are thinking about joining when she has it next summer.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Pick-up trucks
« on: September 10, 2007, 11:06:28 pm »
My BF drives a pick up truck and we are trying to decide how we can take Teddy with us (safely!) when we want to take the truck.

My thoughts are to put an anchor right in the middle towards the front and then allow him a short leash so he can stick his nose out the side but not get his feet out.

Anyone have any experience/idea about this?

I think Ted would have a blast (my current vehicle he gets stuck in the back without even a window!)  I can see those big lips flappin' already!  LOL!

Food Discussion & Information / Bored of the same old food?
« on: September 03, 2007, 05:22:49 pm »
Teddy seems bored of his food.  He doesn't get excited when I feed him and sometimes his breakfast will sit all day until he finally eats it around suppertime.  He used to eat 3 meals/day!  I think he's just tired of the same old thing.  He looks fine, slim but not bony, but just isn't eating as much as I think he should  :-\.

Do you do anything to dress up your dog's food?
