General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / hyper help
« on: November 21, 2006, 06:12:39 am »
Any suggestions on how to get through to a dog when they are going crazy.  Jumping , bouncing, just completely nuts.  When he gets like that a spray bottle is useless.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / New doggie update day 2
« on: November 17, 2006, 08:50:56 pm »
Morning had a good nights sleep.  Buddy was a different dog last night.  He laid on the rug by the bed and never moved till 7 this morning.  Spray bottle have saved our sanity.
Found a new game.  We have a ton of soft toys, left overs, that we throw up the stairs (we have a 2 story house) He wears himself out running up to fetch them.
Today we are off to get a Gentle Lead.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Need help

Had a rough night.  Couldn't get Buddy (new dog, a 70 lb puppy Malamute) to settle down till almost 4 this morning.  He wanted to play.  Having trouble making him understand No.  Example, if you sit down he wants to jump up on ya.  We sharply say no and put him down.  He just bounces back ready to play.
Got a problem first training on the fence isn't till Tue and the chains we have are old and we are afriad they wouldn't hold him.  We have been taking him out every couple of hours and walk him around on the lease and when he's inside we have been throwing toys up the stairs and he retieves them.  Seems to have more engery than we do.  Any suggestions to tire him out and not wreck the house.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / new dog update

Got the new dog home.  They are listing him as a mixed breed under a year old, but he must be a high percent Malamute.
So far our biggest problem has been to make him relize that you relive yourself outside.  Been better this evening.  Think a lot of it was excitement.  He was just leaving a small puddle, and most of the time would not finish when we took him out.  Hope we are doing this right, when I trained puppies I simply said no and took them out.  That is what we are doing with him.
He has been a lot calmer than we expected.  Even is not pulling as bad on the leash.
Someone asked about fence training.  Righ now we are acting like it's not there, but keeping him the boundry of it.  They are going to have 3 training lessons a week apart, the first is Tue.
So far we haven't heard a sound from him.  Son came to visit and he didn't bark at all.
Baby doesn't live close so he will only be around her every month or so for a few days.
Right now we are doing the basis commands.  He laks any schooling.  Any tip would be appreciated.

I'm new to this message board.  We are getting a year old male (altered) Malamute/shepard mix tomorrow from the local pound.  Don't have any history of him.  Doesn't seem to have a lot of training.  Does sit, but doesn't stay and is a dragger on a leash.  Seems to be very loveable.
We just had over an acre fenced with an invisable fence.  He will start his training on it next week..  Has any else use this and what luck are you having with it.
Have had dogs for 40 years and haven't had any problems training them,  shepards, danes and Brittany spanials.  After reading on the malamute I hope I'm up to training one.  Right now he will be the only dog in the house.  I live in Northern NY state, so we have a varity of weather.
Any suggestions on training, you make me afraid to leave him alone.
Also have a g grand daughter 19 mo old.  She is use to large dogs, any suggestions on how to introduce the dog to her?
I'll welcome any help.  He seems to be a big over engeric baby, loves to kiss and seems to love to be hugged.  We have visited him a few times at the pound in an kennel area, where he could run free in a fenced area.  Seemed to take to us and did come when we called him.
Thanks for any help
