Hi its me Rachel in Vt again. Maximus is having a hard time with strangers coming to the house. Such as the mailman, ups , different people besides the regular daycare parents. He is becoming aggressive towards them. One daycare dad as he was leaving the house Maximus got aggresive with. He hasn't bitten anyone, but acts like he wants to
So after much frustration, we are having a dog trainer come to the house to assess the situation and then start working on a plan. The classes we have gone to have used a choker collar, these people use the clicker method.
Any experience with having someone come and evaluate, what if she tells us he is a lost cause,
He is a beautiful dog who thinks he is serious guard dog. I don't mind him being a guard dog, I want him to cut it out when I tell him to

Our french mastiff is now three years old. He is on a regimen of three bufferin a day. It helps for a little while but by evening he won't put any weight on his back legs. As you can guess he has hip displaysia.
Any thoughts, ideas,
we are very sad and upset about this. Our insurance does not cover this,
I hate the thought of him being in constant pain
thanks guys

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / update on Maximus
« on: September 11, 2008, 12:44:03 am »
Maximus had his x-ray. His knees are fine, the vet really feels it is hip displaysia affecting him. As far as his limp, or not putting weight on his right hind leg, foot, hubby thinks Maximus fell from a few feet a couple of weeks ago. He as on a bank in tall grass and next thing you know he was below just sitting there.
The vet gave us options on hip replacement, some sort of shots or the prescription dog food.
Any thoughts
Rachel
I will try to find better pictures of Maximus to post

Introduce Yourself to the Forum / would like to introduce myself and Maximus
« on: September 09, 2008, 01:19:41 pm »
Hi,
I have been on a couple of times. The avatar, if it shows up, is Maximus last week when he got caught tearing up a pillow. He is two years old and full of spit and vinegar.
As you can see he is a Dogue de Bordeau
he is having problems with his legs, knees or hips. we find out tomorrow.
other than that he has been a great dog, except for the fact he won't let anyone clip his nails
we look forward to getting to know everyone

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Anyone tried JD prescription food
« on: September 04, 2008, 11:11:17 am »
Hi everyone,
I haven't been on for awhile cause I forgot my password. If any of you remember we have a dogue de bordeau named Maximus.
when he was younger and was fixed, he had his hips x-rayed and showed he had hip displasia. He has done quite well with it but lately when he runs around alot, he becomes quite lame in his rear legs.
so the doctor wants to start him on this dog food rather than put him on rimadyl or the like at such a young age. Maximus is two years old.
thanks for any input

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / My dogue is eating the couch HELP
« on: February 25, 2007, 07:12:21 am »
HI guys,
sorry I haven't been on for awhile but I have been dealing with some personal stuff. Anyway, my dogue Maximus who is 8 months old has been eating the couch. First it started with the skirt which i cut off. Then he discovered that he could take a big chunk out of the pillows and found stuffing in there. Now his new challenge in life is to try and get it all out.
I put on a sheet and he chewed through that. He is such a goofy dog. Good as gold one minute and a full terror the next. I have made a serious effort to exercise him everyday to get rid of some of this energy but then he gets it in his head that he has to destroy something.
any help or consolation would be great. He does have a kennel but I think he spends that quiet time planning his next move!

Hi everyone,
I wrote yesterday about the challenges we are having with our almost thirteen year old mix dog and our 9 month old mastiff.
since we are now feeding them completely seperate I decided to keep an eye on how much my older dog is eating. She has had the same bowl of food all day. I put it up after ten or so minutes after every meal. She has maybe eaten half to three quarters of a cup of food all day! Do you think I should try her on canned food. Maybe that would help her bowels too. She is a mix black lab and something else. She was abandoned so we don't know. She drinks her water well at least

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / I need some support
« on: February 05, 2007, 09:09:19 am »
Hi everyone,
sorry I haven't been on but my computer got nuts and I had to bring it in. When I introduced myself I spoke about our dogue de bordeaux Maximus.
well we also have a mixed breed dog named Kimberly. she will be 13 in May.
She is our first dog and we are at a crossroads with her. I will try and put a picture of her so you see what I am talking about it.She has had these cysts on her body for a long time. They are getting very big.I am concerned that she is starting to have some dementia.
When we first got Maximus this August she wasn't thrilled at first but got to really be great with him. The last three weeks she has displayed some strange behavior. She eats his food and won't let him get near it.When she has a bone or he has a bone for that matter she has been curling her lip and snapping at him. He is very respectful(thank goodness) but my concern is that I have always been able to take things from her. Now I can't . Yesterday she took Maximus's bone and my son tried to take it from her and she curled her lip and snarled at him.
MY concern is that I do childcare and she will do that to the kids. My husband thinks I am overreacting but I am concerned.I will try to do the pictures now
thanks for the ear and the shoulder, I can't stop crying and I feel silly

Hi,
My name is Rachel and I live in Vermont. Our teenage son purchased Maximus in August. His birtday is June 15,2006. I am soooo glad I found this site. I have serious questions sometimes and silly ones I am sure. Maximus if the first dog of this breed for my vet, so I need expert advice somewhere( you guys know more than I do I am sure!)
Anyway I will try and figure out how to put a picture of him. I probably should take a recent one since I think he gains a pound a day when we are not looking.
Anyway that is who we are and I look forward to making your aquaintance
