Mallory went on an all expenses paid shopping trip this afternoon, her very first, paid for by me. She was such a great ambassador for the breed and I couldn’t be prouder of her. ;D

On the drive to the store she peeked out of the window at the family in the minivan behind us; I’ve never had so much fun being stared at in all my life. Then an elderly couple pulled up beside us at a stoplight, he looked over, saw Mallory, nudged his wife so she’d look, and waved at us.

Between Mallory deciding to flop down in the midst of the parking lot and the people that stopped to talk to us on the way inside the store, it took us ten minutes to get from where we parked to the automatic doors. Then, we were barraged with compliments and people wanting to pet her. A little girl and future big dog owner I suspect, followed us around the store.

Mallory happily obliged everyone, tail wagging, tongue hanging out, wowing everyone with her Saint Bernard cuteness. It took us fifteen minutes to get to the back of the store where the beds were. Once we were there I threw out a few beds on the floor figuring Mallory would choose the one she wanted. She settled on a blue snuggle nest, the cheapest of all the beds. We have a bargain shopper! :-*

Once she plopped down in the aisle and settled on her bed it took another fifteen minutes of conversations and doting before we could switch aisles. Mallory, however, did not want to budge from her bed so we picked up the bed with her still on it, wedged it in the cart, and she napped for the rest of her shopping trip. I bought her apple deodorizing spray and she wasn’t even awake to appreciate it!

She met thirty people today, was barraged by five children, was called cute thirty times, fluffy ten times. An analogy was drawn between her and a horse once, I was warned that she was going to eat me out of house and home by seven different people, and I heard Beethoven referenced six different times. I even heard, “Look Mommy- Beethoven!”

The trainer at the store complimented her on what a low key puppy she is. Hardly anything startles her and she’s friendly to everyone, human and canine. She further reinforced my therapy dog hopes after puppy kindergarten and canine good citizen.

Now that we're home, I've brushed her, deodorized her, and found time to apply for a credit card with her picture on it already. I'll need it for all those future shopping excursions.  :D

FAQs about puppies / Exuberant Chewer
« on: November 15, 2007, 11:56:26 am »
So, Mallory is the most well behaved, smartest puppy I’ve honestly ever came across and I’m not just saying that because she’s mine. That being said, Mallory in all her puppy fabulousness has developed a vice, so I came here for suggestions. ;D

A few weeks ago her breeder told me that she really didn’t have a favorite toy, that she liked chewing on her littermates. That should have been my first indication that she was a chewer. She has plenty of hard and plush toys and she could spend hours chewing on her teddy bear and ladybug. I praise her for playing with those and she understands that those are the only things she should chew in the house.

The issue is she now thinks it’s alright to chew on our hands, feet, and pant legs, and no matter how many times I scold her, or redirect her to her toys she doesn’t seem to get the point. Is this a puppy phase? Any ideas on how to discipline her when she does this?

I’ve tried redirecting her and changing my tone of voice with her, but she seems to be ignoring both. She is being enrolled in puppy kindergarten soon, but I’m trying to set some ground rules now. I don’t want her to grow up thinking it’s alright to use her mouth to play!

Saint Bernard General Discussions / Mallory is home!! (new pictures, pg 2)
« on: November 11, 2007, 05:31:59 pm »
It’s almost two o’clock in the morning and I have to be at work in the morning, so I don’t have much time to write, but I wanted to let everyone know that Mallory is home! Thanks so much for all the good wishes and thoughts you've sent our way.

My mother and I were planning to drive to the airport to greet her alone, but my phone rang at ten o’clock tonight. My former boyfriend and his brother wanted to know if they could go meet my sweet girl, too. So, it turns out Mallory had a whole gang of humans to welcome her home.

She was wagging her tail so hard inside the crate that I could hear it thumping the sides before I even laid eyes on her. Then she licked my hand through the crate door and that was the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

She’s pretty exhausted from her entire ordeal, so she ate her kibble lying down tonight, as any exhausted and smart Saint Bernard would do. It’s like breakfast in bed. I warmed some blankets in the dryer and she's safely snuggled in them right now, fast asleep.

I have a video which I’ll try to upload soon. She actually burped on video. Very ladylike, Mallory. In the meantime, here are a few pictures of my girl and I. :)

Saint Bernard General Discussions / Mallory is flying home!
« on: November 09, 2007, 05:56:17 pm »
Well, Mallory's breeder sent me a message tonight letting me know that Mallory will be arriving sooner that was planned, on a late flight Monday night.

I'll be running around the airport lost at almost midnight, but I couldn't be happier. The greatest part is one of her littermates is being shipped here with her so I'll get to meet Mallory's sister's owners. We'll be the clueless owners standing around with leashes in the dark.

I'll post new pictures of her Tuesday- her first full day at home!  ;D

Any tips for her first night at home?

Saint Bernard Pictures / New Mallory pictures!
« on: October 12, 2007, 11:35:28 am »
Hi everyone! Mallory's breeder sent me an email this morning with new pictures of my girl.

She turned three weeks old yesterday and already is the largest female in the litter. She's definitely going to be on the high end of her weight range, I think. :o :-*

The breeder said they're all starting to get up and play with each other now. I'm so excited. Is it November yet?

Collars, crates, & other cool things / Easy Walk Harness Sizing
« on: October 09, 2007, 05:20:47 pm »
I've been reading the boards and keep seeing the Easy Walk harness mentioned. I'd like to order Mallory one before she gets here, but I have no idea what size to order. For those of you that use the Easy Walk harnesses with your dog, could you offer me some advice on the sizing. What size do you think would be best for an eight week old Saint Bernard puppy?

Food Discussion & Information / Food for Saint Bernard Puppy?
« on: October 05, 2007, 09:36:09 pm »
Does anyone have any advice, opinions, or thoughts on what kind of dry food might be best for a Saint Bernard puppy? What kind of food do you feed your giant breed?

Mallory is supposed to be home in six weeks and I'm trying to do all the research I can so I'll be ready for her when she comes home. Her breeder told me that they don't feed a brand name dog food. She also mentioned that what I fed her needed to be meat based and not have too much protein, to avoid her growing too fast. Any ideas for a new Saint mommy?

Saint Bernard General Discussions / New Saint Mommy!
« on: October 05, 2007, 03:00:14 am »
So, I’ve been reading these forums for the last hour looking at all the adorable pictures of your big paws and wishing the second week in November would get here already!

I’m Mary. I’m twenty two years old, a preschool teacher from North Carolina, and the proud mommy of a two week old Saint Bernard pup named Mallory!

I sent the deposit on her last week, got updated pictures this week, and was told she should be in my arms by the second week in November. She’s currently two thousand miles away from me, so she’ll be arriving on a Delta airlines flight. :)

I was so excited I yelled aloud when I saw her new pictures in my inbox this afternoon. I’ve been to just about every pet store that’s within driving distance on my lunch break, emailed the veterinarian that I am planning to take her to next month, found a puppy class, bought her dog toys, and…well…Petsmart should be delivering a huge box to my place sometime this weekend. My shipping was free for a limited time so that justified my order. Heh. ;D

My family had Saint Bernards when I was growing up so we’re not new to the breed and my parents are just as excited as I am. They’re like excited grandparents looking at ultrasound pictures. They keep saying how beautiful her mask is and how big her paws look. I think she's the most beautiful in her litter but I could be bias.

I can’t wait until she gets here and I’m excited to have found this forum! I look forward to getting to know all of you and your fur babies.

   ~ Mary
