Alaskan Malamute Pictures / My Mals 1st Birthday!
« on: April 28, 2008, 03:39:13 am »
Just some pics of the mals on their first birthday!  We had a puppy party and some puppy cake.  They wore their "dress-up" clothes and had a blast (as did my 9 year old daughter).  We played a few cute games and got lots kisses and cuddles.  Plus - we topped it off with 12 inches of heavy wet snow a day b4 - Yes we had a foot of snow on 4/26 -  all is now melted and my yeard is a mud pit - I think the snow has finally left us - Summer is around the corner!

Food Discussion & Information / Beef (CAribou/Moose) Jerky for Dogs???
« on: April 06, 2008, 01:43:13 am »
I make a mean caribou jerky for humans but am concerned about all the salt (pre-packaged mixes).  We have quite a stock of moose and caribou that would be great for the pups - but I haven't any idea how to prepare it.  Can I just slice it up and use the dehydrator without the mixes or is there a recipe - I can't find one on the web.  UGHHHH  Any ideas would be appreciated.

We live in Alaska and everyone associates sled dogs with us.  I have 3 wonderful pups but in no way want to get into sledding - either sprint or distance due to $ and lack of land to house a true kennel.  We recently attended a weight pull in Anchorage and another smaller one this afternoon.  The people who were there were wonderfull and the pups seriously seemed to enjoy what was going on. All was safe and the dogs were treated absolutely wonderfully - lots of hugs and kisses after pulls - lots of positive and no negative.  The people involved were neat to talk with and very informative.  I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts or information on the sport. We are "thinking" about trying it for fun next year with at least one of the malamutes.  They were too young for this season, but will be old enough for the next.  Any comments - pro or con - I like ot hear the good, the bad and the "ugly" if it exists prior to making any sort of commitment.

Thanks for any and all feedback!

OK - I live in Alaska and its February  - You would think we would be out playing in the snow!  In my dreams.  We have been at 43 balmy degrees with sideways rain and wind now since Sunday.  My pups are getting stir crazy.  My yard has turned into a Huge swimming pool during the daytime and early evening and a skating rink late b4 bed.  I tried walking my Vander Pup Sunday night, but even my ice grippers couldn't find anything to grip and I went sliding multiple times.  Not to mention poor Vander - He really was not meant to be an Olympic Figure Skater.  We are playing indoors after work but I can't get him in the vehicle consistently yet to take him to Puppy PLay.  Any ideas to keep him going while we wait either for it all to freeze back and snow or spring to arrive and melt it all away?  My other 2 do car rides well and get out to puppy school and even over to my school where they can run up and down the hallways when no one else is there ;)

Suggestions???

Thanks -

Alaskan Malamute Discussions / My MAL is afraid of the SUV
« on: February 17, 2008, 07:31:20 pm »
Help - My Vander Puppy (10 month old AK Malamute will not get into the SUV (2001 Durango) without a major fight.  I can no longer lift him in since he is topping to 110 pound mark.  On average I was able to get him in 1x month to due weight checks at the vet, etc, but not without a major battle.  Now he is toooooo heavy (but not overwight - he is considered a giant and has very large parents) for me to lift.  I have tried feeding him in there and a variety of wonderful bribes.  His sister had the same problem but has gotten over it and now manages the Durango with just a little help with her back end.  She hops right into the back seat of the Dodge Neon (what a sight) without issue.  Vander is soooooo stuck on not getting in.  We were able to get him in 2 weeks ago and had a great time at Puppy play (local trainer) but what a nightmare it was getting him back in the car.  My husband was with me and had to basically shove him in  and messed up all the positive we had done ( it was 10 below and after 20 minutes of "working" with Vander we were both out of patience).

Suggestions??? We tried the ramp thing with both and neither of them handled it well.  At one point he wouldn't walk near the cars in the garage or even want to go out the front door.  Now we go the the garage and for walks all the time.  I know it will take time , but I was wondering if anyone else had any other suggestions.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Droopy Ears
« on: February 17, 2008, 07:18:56 pm »
As you can see in my pic I have 2 beautiful Alaskan Malamutes - but.... they both have droopy ears.  In all honesty I keep telling myself it shouldn't bother me - no plans to show and I am not a very "cosmetic" type of person.  I have tried searching the net for ideas and have even talked with the vet.  Also spoke with the breeder.  There are droopy ears in the line - ( one dog about 3 generations back) which I knew prior to purchase.  They are brother and sister and play hard together - when they were much younger lots of ear-pulling.  Still a bit now, but not nearly what it once was.  I was just wondering if anyone else has ideas or opinions on what could help or if we are beyond it.  I wouldn't trade them for a million $.  They have the most wonderful temperments and adore one another.  I wouldn't go as far as taping (yikes - they would eat the tape off eachother!)and would not consider surgery of any type.  It doesn't bother me that much - but at one time my duaghter spoke about possibly being interested in dog shows ( we live in AK so the politics are not as bad as in the lower 48) but I believe their ears would ruin their chances.  We have talked weight pull and agility in place of the more formal show world.

Suggestions or insights would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Looking forward to hearing from anyone out there with large breed info!
