Great Dane Discussions / Training an adult Dane in house manners??
« on: August 18, 2009, 11:26:04 am »
Hello all,

So you have probably read Odinn's story in my previous posts. I went into a little bit of how he is acting in the house... and I could REALLY use some help with that!! I have never brought in a fully grown young male dane who had not been inside a house since puppyhood, needless to say it is not going very smoothly.

We have lost our TV, china cabinet, and a couple of meals so far. He is just so boisterous and he WILL NOT settle once he comes inside, he has his "happy tail" whipping around knocking our skin-kids over, jumping on the couch and sqashing us and the kids, putting his nose into everything and knocking everything possible over. Let me make it clear that I DO NOT BLAME HIM for this behavior. He is excited and curious and I feel that it is only natural, but he is going to hurt one of the kids or myself (as you can all see I'm 9 months pregnant) and we need to address the problem in as quick a fashion as possible. Does anyone have any helpful hints?

He is doing very well and has not had any accidents inside (yet) the only problem is he is a bull in a china cabinet!!

Great Dane Discussions / Odinn and Valkyrie together again! :)
« on: August 18, 2009, 10:52:49 am »
Hi everyone!
Some of you may remember me from last year when I was active on the site. Life got hectic and took over and I've been away for a long long time! But I am back!

You may also remember little Miss Valkyrie, my rescued merlequin dane puppy. Well she is all grown up now, though she is a petite little dane girl weighing in at only 95 lbs. She's a fantastic little gal!

The rescue we worked with in removing Val and her brothers and sisters from thier "breeder" contacted me recently asking whether I could take in her brother who had been adopted into a new home where he had also suffered abuse and neglect. This poor boy didn't even have a name. He was chained in thier backyard getting beaten up by the family's doberman, who was not on a chain. He has clearly not been fed properly and is sooo skinny :(. You can see the results of his malnutrition, his hips bow out, his joints are wobbly, and he already has tooth decay at 13 months old. He is also covered in little scars from his ordeal with the other dog. We have given him his name from when we fostered him back, Odinn. Odinn also has some problems with sight and hearing though he is not completley deaf or blind, he suffers from night blindness and can only hear extreme pitched sounds, very high or very low. This is a congenital issue he has had since puppy-hood.
He has only been back with us for a couple of days and it has been a chore. He has clearly not been in a home (and I'm sure you all can see the problems that arise from a full grown dane running around tail a-wagging so excited to be loved). Some of the casualties have been our china cabinet, flat screen TV, and of course, dinner. We have a lot of work ahead of us but we will get him healthy and well adjusted and he will probably stay with us for the rest of his young life.

Just thought you all would enjoy hearing this poor boy's story! And now for the pictures! I will post more of his condition later on, for now just happy ones :)

"Owner's name is James Redford (jamredford3@aol.com)

Newfoundland,  "Moose" is un-neutered male, AKC, w/papers, all black, ~120lbs, only 1 1/2 yrs, UTD on shots, good with kids, don't know about cats.

owner wants to screen applicants and get a small fee.  "

This is information I recieved in an email from my local humane society asking for help. This is all the information I have access to but the owner's email is listed. I am unsure of the reason he has to get rid of the dog but know that he is "leaving" on July 27, in this area it is possible he is military. I have not personally contacted him as I can't handle not being able to help, lol. Unfortunatley with my move I cannot take this boy.

*crossing my fingers that someone on this wonderful forum will find a way to help this dog.

As I am moving my internet has been shut off and will probably not be restored for another month or so (ugh) so that is the reason for my long... and continued absence. Please shoot me a PM if someone is able to help or needs transport assistance with this dog. I will try to check in as much as possible!!

VOTING HAS BEGUN!!! See below for instructions.
Taking my lead from a girl who does photo contests on my military support group forum, YOU MAY VOTE TWICE... one for 2 different hubbys or twice for the same marvelous man. and you may not vote for yourself :P Please list your votes at the beginning of your reply and commentation after so I can easily count. Hope we get TONS of votes!!!

let's nominate our men and show them some appreciation for everything they do for us, and our families. Even when they can't have a sandwich without finding dog hair in it and they think half of their pay is going to HWP, Flea Prevention, and FOOD for our giant breed pooches they stand by us. Here's our chance to show some appreciation!!

Nominate a wonderful hubby here, tell a little about them and post a picture. I will close nominations on the 15th (father's day coincidentally) and open voting in another post for the following week. I'll post hubby of the month June 22nd. And then we'll start up voting for July.

It will give me something to do :p And I'm going to cheat and nominate mine. But I promise I won't cheat when counting the voteroos  ;)

OK... so Nominating my wonderful amazing brave compassionate husband Michael...

What is there to say about him, Michael is a US soldier currently serving a 15-18 month tour in Iraq and we couldn't be more proud of him. Besides being the most brave and hard working man I know, he is an AMAZING father and loves his girls. I can't say enough about him, he is truley my soulmate, and my everything. But since this is a DOGGIE forum   ;) I'll get on to the pooch related reasons he should be considered for Hubby of the month for June. And he has never once turned down a poor little puppy dog face when I have brought them into rescue. Even when we had 5 Great Dane puppies (12 weeks old) an adult lab a 110 lb GSD and 3 unrelated 6 month old puppies PLUS our 2 dogs the day he got home for his supposed R&R. His face got a little tight and then I explained to him I had gone to the shelter to pull two into foster care and they were all on the Euthenasia list for the next day, I couldn't leave them. He smiled and said "I know it means so much to you... but I still think you're nuts." sighed, sat on the couch and took 10 minutes learning all their names, lol. Last week he sent an email and told me instead of buying a motorcycle like he had wanted to when he got back from Iraq he was going to build some outdoor kennels with cooling units so I could rescue MORE dogs.

I could go on and on and on... but here's a picture of the man of my life. and I can't wait to see what you all have to say about your wonderful significant others!!

I had to post more than one picture, I couldn't pick my favorite...

This picture is from the day he deployed, I was 32 weeks pregnant :'(

Family.

OH, and I couldn't resist adding this one of the night before he went back to the desert.

Great Pyrenees Pictures / Pictures of my Oliver

Thank God for my cuddle buddy. Hubby snapped this while he was home on R&R

Baby talk to my boy

Oliver cuddling the love of his life, the lovley miss Abigail.

You can't see from this angle really, but the way their legs and feet meet makes a heart. They lay like this all the time.

Me giving Ollie kisses, he usually enjoys this but I think he was tired of having his pictures taken as he looks less than enthused =p

Does anyone have any opinions on whether or not he might be purebred. We don't care, we took him assuming he was a mutt. All the other poochies are mixed breeds. But the more pictures I have seen of pyrs the more I think he may be a pet quality purebred.

I just wanted to introduce myself and post some pictures of one of my many dogs, but my only Pyr. Meet Oliver Twist aka Ollie-bear

Ollie is a 4 year old rescue Pyr (mix, we think). He came into our rescue weighing 70 lbs and with multiple kinds of worms, extremley bad mange, road rash, and other skin issues. After spending 3 weeks at the vet to get stable he came to stay with us as a foster dog, but we fell in love. The first night here he put his paw on my husbands leg when he stopped petting him (apparently a classic Pyr trick) as if to say "please sir, can I have some more?" which is how he accquired his name. We have had him about 6 months now and it has taken us about this long to get him where he looks decent and has put on substantial weight. After trying several market dog foods, having allergies to EVERYTHING, several trips to the vet, shaving the poor boy naked, prescription shampoos, and rounds upon rounds of antibiotics, we now have him on a home cooked organic diet (yay! ) He now weighs about 110 lbs and his coat is coming in nicley.

After this experience with our "problem child" I have become EXTREMLEY bonded with my boy. He exhibits so many traits of a Pyr I have been amazed. My husband is currently deployed to Iraq and he has taken the role of guardian, sleeping partner, caretaker and playmate for the kids and just has been an all around joy to have in our home. After 10 years of dog rescue, I have finally found "my breed" and I couldn't be happier.

Here are a couple of pictures of Oliver and my daughter when he first came in and more recently.

I can only find this one of him after first coming home, but notice his horrible skin and how thin he is.

And here more recently my daughter was sick and Oliver became her personal bodyguard/pillow combo

I look forward to networking with you all!!
