Food Discussion & Information / Chicken and Rice diet?
« on: April 25, 2009, 07:18:55 pm »
Hello all!
I'm having some food issues with Daisy and need to switch her back to Orijen, from Canidae. I want to give her system a break before I make the switch (she's been having some booty blowouts) and so I was going to do the chicken and rice diet for a day or two. Is it just plain white rice? And, how is the chicken cooked? Boiled? Also, how much of this combo would you feed a 17 week old puppy each day?
Thanks so much!

Daisy is 12.5 weeks today, and does great on the leash (she just naturally isn't a puller). We've been down the street (it's about 1 tenth of a mile, so not much at all) and back just a couple times. When can I start taking her on actual walks, of let's say a half of a mile, or a mile? I like to walk our Mini Aussie about 3-4  miles a day, but thought I could start taking Daisy with us for a half of a mile-to a mile, double back, drop her off, and continue with the Aussie. Does this sound ok?

Daisy was being fed Innova LBP, but I decided to switch her Orijen. I have over half of a 33 lb bag left, would anyone be interested in it? All you'd have to pay for is shipping from 56258.

Next, I have an unopened 33 lb. bag of Eagle Pack Holistic large/giant breed puppy. I don't need it. I paid right around $58 at a local store. They special ordered it for me, and won't let me return it. I'll sell it for $20, and you pay shipping from 56258 as well.

I can take paypal, whatever, I just don't need the foods, and thought maybe someone on here might!

Remembering those no longer with us. / In Loving Memory of Oreo
« on: March 17, 2009, 12:58:10 pm »
Yesterday, March 16th, we put down my best friend of 15 years, Oreo the Papillion. I don't have a memory without her, and she sure was my heart dog! I always promised her that I would be with her, if I could, when it was time. I rubbed her head and told her how much I would always love her, as she slipped off to the Rainbow bridge.

Well, I think Daisy might have a bit of an allergy. She has BAD dandruff, is always itching/nibbling her paws and what not, and has smelly ears. I thought the smelly, guncky ears were from a bath I gave her, thinking I got shampoo in them. She has been on malotic since wednesday for the yeast. The gunck has improved, smell has not.
I've decided to switch her to Orijen LBP anyway, to see if it's grains, if not I'll go to the 6 Fresh Fish. She is on Innova LBP now.
Should I make the switch slow, or stop the Innova right away since I suspect allergies? If I did that, I'm scared to just go to Orijen, as it's quite rich. Any suggestions?

Also, what are some good grain free soft treats? For now I use kibble, but I like to give her a treat at times, and we'll be showing so I need something for in the ring. I'd like to buy them, but homemade recipes welcome too.

Thank you everyone! :)
Oh, and Daisy is 12 weeks tomorrow, can they get alleriges to food at this age, even?

Anything Non-Dog Related / Funny kid story!
« on: March 12, 2009, 10:35:43 am »
My show mentor has a 9 year old niece. She took her niece to a dog show a while back and noticed the little girl's eyes getting bigger and bigger as she saw all of the giant breeds. My mentor just thought she was amazed at their size. After a while my mentor noticed her niece focusing on a fawn mastiff. Her niece looked up at her and said, "Auntie I just saw the biggest pug EVER!"

"Numnumnum, don't mind, numnum, me, I ain't do nufin!"

....I must say cardboard boxes make nice inexpensive toys, and Daisy sure seems to think she won the lotto whenever she gets one! I may be asking for trouble though  :D

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Cleaning ears?
« on: March 04, 2009, 06:11:24 pm »
I've never had to clean my dog's ears before, and Daisy has some gunk in both of hers. I suspect the gunk is from running around in the barn for a week and getting as dirty as she possibly could. Can anyone explain to me how to clean her ears, and what to use?

Labrador Retriever Pictures / She's home!

I picked up my little girl yesterday. She made a 6 hour trip in the car with me up to see my fiance, and she was a total angel. No potties in the house yet, she crates fine, and loves to have play time and then sleep! So far she's the most laid back, relaxed pup I've ever had, although she's only all of 9.5 weeks old! :D
I'm estatic, and think I picked the perfect new family member! Mr. Gilligan is enjoying my in-laws as their new dog! Here are pictures of "Daisy" and Gilligan!

...does anyone know how to make it so her eyes don't look like this?

And....Gilliga n

OH MY GOSH I COULD RIP MY HAIR OUT!  :-[
Gilligan's breeders are at it again. My fiance and his family own a large horse stable, and live in a small town. The breeder is from the same town, so they are fimilar with each other. Well, to make a long story short, Gilligan ended up with my fiance, out at the barn. Some story about the wife now has cancer, no health insurance, they were too embarassed to call me, and they got the humane society involved, saying that Matt and I ditched the dog with them. I guess they are now rehoming all their breeders to. Wow.

So, Gilligan is with Matt, and Matt's falling in love and says he feels sorry for the 'little' guy, who now weighs 13 lbs, by the way.

No idea what to do now, but it looks like we're keeping Gilligan, or at least that is what Matt is saying. I refuse to talk to these people, ever, again. Gilligan will reside at his parents house for now, so these lunatics can't come and try and take him back, because I wouldn't put it past them to do that.

Now I'm in quite the pickle, Matt and I can't do two dogs, but it's not fair to my new pup, or my breeder, so I have to talk to her tomorrow and explain the situation, she is aware of what the crazies have done!

Please, if you're buying a puppy DO YOUR HOMEWORK, and then DOUBLE CHECK IT, because I thought I had, but boy was I wrong. They did send me my money back in the mail yesterday, so we did get him for free, but now I wonder at what cost....

For now, here is a picture of Gil napping on the couch:

Helpful Groups & Dogs in Need / Pics of my Chi Foster....
« on: February 20, 2009, 02:34:36 pm »
Hey everyone!
I've never fostered before and this was kind of a spur of the moment thing, but here is "Toula" the Chi/Rat Terrier. She's a little doll, and is coming out of her shell quickly, she loves everyone! She's starting to warm up to the other dogs in the house, still isn't a fan of the cats! Seems to be housebroke too, and sleeps like a champ in her crate! Not a chewer so far, either.
She is available for adoption if anyone is interested, or knows of anyone! She gets spayed this week and then all of her vaccinations/worming/etc.!

Helpful Groups & Dogs in Need / Going to foster a Chihuahua...any help?
« on: February 19, 2009, 09:21:18 am »
I know we are all BP owners here, but please be as unbiased as you can in maybe helping me a bit!

I got contacted today by a friend who does Chi rescue. There is a Chi here in town who needs to be fostered starting today, but the rescue gal is going to be out town for a week. I aggreed to take the Chi.

I guess the pup is timid. I hope she fits into the pack we've got here. She's 8 months old. We've got 2 senior dogs who don't much care about other dogs, although one is alpha, a 1 year old mini aussie who just wants to play, and 2 cats, who mind their own business. I don't know that Chi's have the best temperment, are there any suggestions as to what to do with a timid pup?

Is there anyway to kind of start modeling her so she does not being an aggressive Chi? All the ones I know are fairly tempermental. Also, I'm sure I'll fall in love, watch me end up with a Chi!

Anyway, any help is appreciated. Maybe some of you have not had Chi's, but a lot of you foster/have adopted dogs, and this is my first time!

Labrador Retriever Pictures / Well, I picked her out!
« on: February 17, 2009, 12:38:58 pm »
Here is the lab puppy I picked! She was evualated as 3rd pick of the litter, and I'm very excited to get into some showing with her! She's a little chunk of a thing, yet so pretty and lady-like, not sure what to do as far as names go! Any ideas?

Anyway, I'm very happy with my decision, and I can't wait for you all to get to know her. She comes home with me on either Sunday or Monday (which ever day works for me).
