Introduce Yourself to the Forum / Hello Again.....
« on: July 19, 2010, 08:19:47 pm »
Hi everyone. I've been on this site for wow almost 2 years now but I haven't actually been on in forever so I figure I would re-introduce myself and my bubbies as I like to call them.

Well I'm BritnyLe I'm married to my lovely husband. We have a 1 year old daughter and just bought our first house!!! yay!

Anyway about the "other children" in our house.....

I have my Hades, he is going to be 2 on August 24th. I always tell people that I don't have any urge to have a male child because Hades is basically my son. My husband and I bought him shortly after we moved in together when we were still dating.

His father was a Great Dane/English Mastiff mix and his mother was a Saint Bernard. He basically looks like a muscular dane with the saint markings and coat. He's pretty much the best of everything. He has the height and body of the Dane, the muscles and a bit wider head like the Mastiff, and the beautiful long hair and marking of the saint. Plus he NEVER drools!!!

We also have a new furry addition to our family, her name is Jypsi. She is a cocker spaniel/australian cattle dog mix. We got her for our daughter because we really wanted a smaller dog that my daughter could play fetch with and take with us for walks.

Hades really had no motivation to chase a ball or walk at all so we wanted a dog with a bit more energy. Also our vet doesn't think Hades will live too long so we wanted another dog that our daughter could have to ease the pain when Hades passes away.

We also have many cats here because we breed and show Ragdolls and Turkish Angoras.

Oh and we have Otis our rabbit who thinks he's a dog and runs throughout the house. lol!

Well that's a bit about us! I can't wait to re-meet everyone and she what has all changed!!

Ok so I had a post on here before about a lady who is mix breeding her dogs constantly on purpose. Well she's at it again! she is now no longer  mixing just pure-bred dogs together. She used to mix and match her Saint bernards, pyrs, newfies, and old english sheepdogs. Well now she added a new addition to her group and is breeding him as well. He is a Doberman/Pit Bull mix. She is breeding him with her other female dogs and just put a new page up stating how excited she is about her new litter. She bred her Saint Bernard with the Doberman/Pit Bull mix! And she's boasting about how cute the puppies are >:(

Helpful Groups & Dogs in Need / Oh sooooo tempting
« on: February 17, 2009, 10:57:26 am »
So recently there have been tons of big paw puppies at shelters near me and I'm so tempted to scoop one up. There is a male brindle, chow/great dane mix that will be ready March 1st, a pure-bred black great dane puppy that was born November 30th, he's the last of a litter of three, and they have three anatolian shepard puppies! I would take them all if I could! If anyone would be interested in any of them I could send you the links for them.  ;)

Group Discussions & Photos / I might be losing my mind.....
« on: February 11, 2009, 04:26:55 pm »
Well Chris thinks I'm going crazy and I just might be. So here's the thing. I'm a stay at home soon to be mom. Which is great it's what I always wanted but I won't have the baby till July so until then I find myself overly bored with nothing to do. Chris works from 3:30pm - 2:30am so I'm home alone alot and it's hard to have dinner together. I LOVE to cook and bake (I was a professional cake decorator before I decided to stay home) and I usually just makes dinner for myself and put Chris's portion in a container for him to take to work the next day.

My favorite part of cooking is watching the other person enjoy it and I never get to. Well most of the time you can't find portions for just two people. Sooooo I've started to cook for the dogs.  :P I make meals now that me and the dogs can eat together. I even put them on their own plates and make it look really nice. Tonight we had chicken parm, with boneless skinless chicken breasts, homemade tomato sauce and steamed vegetables. Hades and Roxi loved it and they always seem to enjoy it way more then Chris. LOL!

Group Discussions & Photos / Hades has a new girlfriend. LOL!
« on: February 09, 2009, 09:35:37 am »
So I was talking to a friend and she introduced to me a friend of hers. Well we start talking and I was telling her about how I was planning on taking Hades to the dog park now that it's getting warmer. Well...... I fing out she has a 7 month old female German Shepard puppy! So we decide to set up a puppy play date and Hades was just awe struck. He was such a gentleman. He'd let her drink the water first and he'd wait till she was done before he'd drink anything. He'd also make me stop and wait for her if they fell behind when we were walking and he'd always have to be right at her side when they were playing. He didn't even pay attention to the other dogs, he was 100% focused on her. It was adorable. I have some pictures below that one of our friends took with her phone.

Anything Non-Dog Related / NDR: Our newest additions....
« on: February 07, 2009, 12:49:21 pm »
Soooo me and Chris went to the pet store to get some dog food and ended up getting a bit more. We got 5 adorable baby rats that were way underweight and then on the way out I decided to look at the rabbits. Well most of them were huge because they mainly carry adult rabbits but this time they had a litter of babies. I would have been able to resist the temptation but then all of a sudden the tiniest baby bunny I have ever seen came hoping out of the little hideout and I had to have her. So my bf gave in and got her for me. I took a bunch of pictures but it's hard to show how tiny she actually is. I tried to take a pic of her next to my hand because I have really small hands.

I still need a name for her. I want something that either goes with Valentines Day or her orange coloring.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Hades food question
« on: February 04, 2009, 08:36:26 pm »
Ok so I'm begining to think that I should start regulating Hades food more. He's now eating almost two whole ice-cream buckets of food a day! I originally started him off with his food being out all day because at my second vet appointment my vet was telling me that he was underweight and he "weighed less that what a saint his age should weigh," which frusterates me because he's a mix andwhen I had my great dane, Blue, he was even lighter at this age.

I've looked at growth charts and so far Hades is the height of a GD puppy at 5 months and he's actually about 10 pounds more then a GD would be at this age. He has the long GD legs and the deep chest so I'm thinking that he'll just be closer to a GD when it comes to weight but I didn't feel like arguing with the vet again. I began free feeding him then because I wanted to get his weight up.

For the last few months it seems that he only eats at certain times and when he does eat, he eats so much that it looks like he's pregnant and his stomach is going to explode. I didn't worry about it when he was younger because most puppies have that puppy belly and then it goes away. Well his went away, until he eats, then its like a dramatic difference. I think he only eats at certain times because of Roxi. She'll sniff his food and then he'll run to his bowl and eat the whole thing. So I'm not sure if he's eating all of it because he's hungry or because he's competeing with Roxi.

So do you think I should start giving him a certain amount a day and limiting what he gets? Or is this normal for some puppies his age? If I do start limiting it, how much should I give him daily?

I know some giant breeds like mastiffs and saints, which is 2 of the 3 breeds he has in him, are prone to becoming overweight and I don't want him to be eating to much if he doesn't need it.

Ok so I have had my rattery for years and have always taken in extra animals people couldn't keep or what not just so that they could live out their lives somewhere nice. Well I never advertised that I'd rescue unwanted animals because I only had room for a couple more and didn't want to be overwhelmed. Well anyway, the other day I decided that I would start advertising that I would take in rescues because I have soooo much extra room, time, and supplies right now. I figured I would get itt out there and try to help out because I've seen rats and such at the shelter here that have been there for months and I'd be more than willing to take the small animals the shelter gets in and either let them live out their lives here or find a suitable pet home else where saving the shelter time and money. Sounds like a good idea right?

Well today I get a rude message from someone at the shelter here who saw my page and started ranting at me. I don't know what to think about this. Am I doing the wrong thing by trying to help? I'll post the message and my reply below, let me know what you think and if I handle this the right way. Thanks!

Message from her:

"This is so wrong you CANNOT pose yourself as a rescue if you are breeding animals! If you care so very much about finding homes for unwanted animals, then stop making more. I work at the shelter and we are continuously admitting small animals. Due to over breeding, lack of education, and responsibility; alot of unwanted pets are abandoned. Why not take a stand on the efforts to save these lil guys instead of being a part of the problem! It is easy to like animals and want more, but what they really need is for someone to protect their futures, not another unwanted pregnancy."

My reply:

"None of my animals are bred without a waiting list of pre-approved homes. Rats, are my main focus and the rats I breed are AFRMA pedigreed. I don't just breed because I get bored or it's fun. I also have a list people that own snakes and need snake food. Many don't agree with colonials animals health and won't feed them to their snakes and they don't want to pay 10 dollars for a rat from Petco. I take in rescues because I see how many pet rats their are. I have the space and time to take in these animals and have the experience to give them a great life here as pets only, or find a home for them with other people I know will love and care for them.

I have never had a surplus of rats or mice and have never had any that were unwanted. I always have planned litters. Many people like unique rats and don't just want hooded rats which is what you most commonly see at petstores and rescues. I myself own 3 snakes as well. Two of which I rescued, and snakes need to eat and I don't agree with frozen feeding because many nutrients are lost in the process.

I only started taking in rescues because I see so many rats and gerbils and mice that people buy from pet shops get thrown out after a child out grows them or people just decide they don't want them anymore. I have nothing but my animals to focus on. I also have a return policy for anyone that adopts an animal from me, any and all animals can be returned at any time if the person is unhappy with them or can no longer care for them."

Mixed Breed Pictures / New pictures of 5 month old Hades
« on: January 26, 2009, 08:53:16 am »
These were all taken last weekend. Some of them my boyfriend took and I wasn't very happy about it because I hate being in pictures and he was making fun of me. He picks on me because Hades likes to be held like a baby because I used to hold him like that when he was teeny tiny. Well needless to say he isn't very tiny anymore and he still wants to be held like a baby and ofcourse I still try to hold him that way. LOL! So my boyfriend makes fun of me and took pictures this time when I was sleeping.  :P

We were sleeping so nicely....

And then he had to pick on me and wake me up (not very happy about that)

Hades this morning giving me his puppy eyes so that I'd let him lay on the couch by me again.

Treatment & Preventative Meds / 1800PetMeds?
« on: January 22, 2009, 02:08:00 pm »
Ok so I'm wondering if anyone has tried using 1800PetMeds. I'm just wondering because I'm getting a little upset with my vet. I've had Hades in now 4 times and each time they have tested a fecal sample and said he had worms and "dewormed" him. I brought him in again because my vet requires me to make an appointment each month to get Hades his Heartworm preventer (which is also frusterating) and needless to say all these visits are getting pricey and frusterating. I'm wondering if I can just worm Hades at home and give him his heartworm at home too. The vet visit is 35 dollars just for the visit and then it's basically,

"How's he doing?"
"He's doing good."
"He's getting really big."
"Yep he is."
"Ok well I'll get his heartworm and give him his wormer and then you're good to go."

His visit run up to about 125 each time and I've never had to go in each month for heartworm or had a dog get wormed this much.

Can I just buy the stuff of the site? It's like half the price of the same exact stuff the vet keeps giving him.

FAQs about puppies / Maybe a silly question but....
« on: January 22, 2009, 01:05:26 pm »
Can Hades have carrots? I'm eating the little baby carrots and one fell on the floor and Hades ate it and now he's like addicted. He won't take his eyes off the carrots. I even threw one of his treats and he ignored it and kept waiting for another carrot. I tried to give Roxi a carrot and she wont eat eat it. Is it ok for Hades to eat carrots? Because if he's this in love with baby carrots I might use these for his training insted of his treats.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Video of the terrible two-some
« on: January 21, 2009, 12:39:04 pm »
I came home from work that night to find that Chris had left early for work and instead of the dogs being home alone for 2 hours they were home alone for about 4 hours and though there were no "accidents" Hades who was 3 1/2 months old and 2 year old Roxi decided to tear open the garbage and scatter it as well as throwing the laundry all over the bedroom floor. This video was taken when they were still in their "naughty" moods. Try to ignore my annoying high pitched doggy voice. LOL! Also notice the random garbage and laundry all over. Enjoy!

When me and my boyfriend were looking for breeders of giant breeds in my area we found a breeder that constantly mixed her dogs. I'm not gonna say any names and I love mixed breed dogs if it was an accident and the owner knows that but to keeping mixing dogs and charging pure-bred prices seems a bit wrong to me. The breeder I'm talking about started as a Saint Bernard breeder and still sells registered saints but she now also has her saints, a newfy, a great per., and a old english sheepdog. She constantly mixes and matches her dogs and sells the puppies for $400+ a puppy. Her last batch she had puppies that were 6 months and no buyers so she had to lower her prices. Yet she keeps popping out more puppies. What do you think about this?

Hi everyone. I joined awhile ago but havn't been on at all. I just wanted to say hi. I'm 19 and currently have two beautiful dogs. I've always loved big dogs and spent my whole life around them. I had a great dane named Blue when I was 16 and I always knew I wanted to have a giant breed dog when I got my own place.

I was able to get my own dog when I was 17 so about two years ago but because I was living with my dad I had to get a medium sized dog because he didn't want a real big dog in his house. So I ended up getting Roxi about two years ago right after my boyfriend/best friend committed suicide. She helped me get through everything.

I got Roxi from a guy my dad knew. He owned a farm and two of his farm dogs had an ooops litter of puppies. They were a mix between an American Bulldog male and a female Border Collie. So we went looking for a male dog, with long hair, and preferably black. Which alot of border collies have. Well needless to say that isn't what I got. She completely picked me and although my dads friend said she was anti-social she wouldn't leave me alone. After I picked her up I never put her back down. So I ended up taking home a female, very short haired, mainly white with brown spotted dog. LOL!

I got my second amazing companion last October as an early birthday present to myself. I had finally gotten my own house and was finacialy stable. So I had been looking into either getting an Irish Wolfhound, a Great Dane, a Saint Bernard, or an English Mastiff. We looked for months and couldn't find a breeder or rescue around my area. The few I did find never called me back or returned any of my emails. I kinda gave up at that point and figured that when I was meant to find a dog I would.

Well a friend of mine called me and told me that he had found an a guy in his area that had a litter of mixed giant breed puppies. He didn't remember what breeds they were mixed with but he said the guy had both parents on site and it was within driving distance. So he gave me the number and I talked to the guy and set up a time to meet him. It ended up that the dad was a huge Great Dane/English Mastiff mix and the mom was a pure bred Saint Bernard.

This was the second litter the guy had bred and he said the puppies from the last litter ended up having the Saint Bernard's markings and hair, the Great Dane's height, and the English Mastiff's weight. The males from the last litter weighed between 250-300 pounds. I was super excited. The puppies were 3 of the 4 breeds I really wanted so I ended up taking home an amazing "little" 7 week old male puppy. He's amazing but a complete momma's boy and is sometimes stubborn when my boyfriend tells him to do things and looks at me for the ok.

I have some pictures of my babies below.

Me and Blue when I was 16

Roxi at 10 weeks

Roxi at 1 year

Hades at 7 weeks

Hades at 4 months
