Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Home alone
« on: February 13, 2009, 09:37:09 am »
Hi guys! It's been a while!

Another training question: how did you progress from home alone in a crate to home alone without a crate? What were your first crate-less home alone experiences? How old before they get free reign of the house? Strategies?

Thanks a bunch,

Mel

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Guy with 7 Afghan Hounds

Seriously, I saw a dude with 7 blond Afghan Hounds and apparently they are all his! Right downtown Vancouver on the Sea Wall. They were quite the sight prancing along in a neat row. :)

FAQs about puppies / Dominance
« on: January 25, 2009, 08:44:25 pm »
So Diesel now is 7 1/2 months and quite massive...and attempting dominance on some dogs. He does the thing where he advances on the dog chest forward and towers over their head. This is really new as a month ago even a pug could boss him around.

So my question is: what should I be doing about it? He does this so rarely but I'd hate for him to get himself in trouble--his last attempt was on a dog that could have probably taken him in 5 seconds flat  :-\

Groans, Gripes, Brags & Boasts / Comments on walks, parks, etc-pet peeves
« on: January 16, 2009, 05:59:38 pm »
Okay, dish 'em out!

I've definitely got a few :)

1. Nasty looks when it seems I didn't clean up after poop when I couldn't. This was especially bad when Diesel had diarrhea for 4 days--you know those poops that you could only get rid of with a hose? Unfortunately, I don't have a 4 km hose that I drag around on walks.

2. On the subject of poop, this has only happened a few times, but false accusations of poop--when it's another dogs and you take the blame for it.

3. "He's gonna be SOOO big!"

I've mentioned this one before: I get this at least once a day. At least. And the worst, is that most times, it doesn't sound like an exclamation, it sounds like a statement designed to inform. No s**t he's gonna be big, sherlock!

4. Unwarranted advice. I don't need it, or ask for it. You know those wonderful statements that start with "you should..." that usually come out of the blue? I'm good, I'm connected, if I need help I go on this website called "big paws only" where I can start threads if I've got concerns.  ;) (thank goodness for all of you, by the way!)

5. Unwarranted BAD advice  ;D This is my favorite one, once again from a stranger that stopped me in the street: "You know, don't let your dog die too early, feed him good. You should be giving him eggs, bread and bacon ev-ery-daaayy. Hmm-hmm!" (Goes with knowing look + nodding)

6. Random criticism, usually goes with or is a disguise for a #5 offense. "Your dog is skinny, how come he doesn't swim yet, you're too hard on him" (usually said by people who exclaim on what a well behaved dog he is).

7. Over-excited small voices that exclaim and fuss over my dog about how darn cute he is while staring at him and tapping their knees, then get freaked out because he wants to jump up on them... but THEN tell you it's okay when you try to correct him. Um, I think I can be the judge of what's "okay", thank you!

Lol, I needed this vent :)

Newfoundland Pictures / Diesel's vacation
« on: January 05, 2009, 07:13:29 pm »
Diesel just came back from a two week vacation up north, in Gold Bridge. To give you an idea of the place, the town center has a total population of 44 people.

My in-laws took him down to their cabin while we had our holiday work rush, which is one of the most intense rushes of the year. They brought him on ski-doo runs, on snow shoe hikes, let him play in the snow on their acre. He came back yesterday evening, and my, he beefed up!

Now the dog is back, our rush is over and life is back to normal. Well, maybe it will be once we clean up the house, restock the fridge and re-crate-train the dog!  ::) Ah well! ;)

FAQs about puppies / Come command
« on: December 21, 2008, 11:06:35 am »
I need all the advice I can get on this one!

So far I do practices, back and forth with my hubby, randomly in the house, where he gets praise then treat. It's not really cutting it.

He's great at it if a treat is the best reward around at the time, but if there is a better reward, say like another dog, a squirrel or an idiot at the dog park giving him a treat, it's over.

At that point I'll slowly walk over and leash him for a bit, or leave if he really annoyed me, but by that time, I'm not sure if he can put "not coming when called" together with "no more off-leash". The time discrepancy between this action/reaction seems a bit big for a dog.

I want to achieve better than this, any suggestions?

Newfoundland Discussions / Diesel the tough guy
« on: December 17, 2008, 02:50:30 pm »
Yesterday we went to a friend's house, a farm with some livestock and Dexter, the huge GP farm dog. We left Diesel outside to be a dog, which was met with a bit of whining. Until it was time for Dexter to perform one of his duties: barking at the coyotes. So Diesel creeps up next to Dexter, emitting little wimpy yelps, looking from left to right, at Dexter, at us at the door, like "is it okay? can I do it too?"

So then, seeing that he seemed to be getting away with it, he creeps up a bit closer to Dexter, until he's right next to him, all puffy chested, howling at the coyotes like he meant business... All feeling tough next to big 'ol Dexter  ::) :D

We didn't tell him how cute he was, you know, not to cramp his style  ;)

Anything Non-Dog Related / Mandolin VS GoofyNewfie: 1/0
« on: December 15, 2008, 07:27:32 pm »
I'm in a post-y mood but typing is not so good...

I was using a mandolin to julienne some beets, and caught my ring finger right in there...  :o ouch, indeed.

So I'm by myself, there are no more band-aids, my hand is a mix of gushing blood and beet juice so it looks 10 times worse than it actually is. And I couldn't open the dang child-proof cap for the disinfectant so I ended up stabbing the bottle lol...All this is accompanied by frantic singing/yelping... And now I have this huge ridiculous gauze mega finger  ::)

Diesel is one calm puppy. He just walked over, waited by the door of the bathroom till I was done. He keeps insisting on inspecting the mega-finger...thank goodness he's gentle.

Groans, Gripes, Brags & Boasts / Bite Inhibition
« on: December 05, 2008, 10:37:40 am »
So I am at my husband's band practice, and the singer, who I believe watches too much Dog Whisperer, proceeds to tell me I have no control of my dog "Well, he bites at peoples hands."

My apologies: It's late and I need to stop hitting reply with quote because I inadvertantly hit "modify" instead,  right beside that button, and wiped out most of your post :'( So sorry :-\ That's twice now in less than a month I've done that :(

Odie in Garfeild

Scooby-Doo

Santa's little helper, the Simpsons

Droopy dog

Huckleberry Hound

Pluto, from Disney

Newfoundland Discussions / Ladies and gentlemen! Introducing....
« on: October 22, 2008, 07:42:33 am »
Our adorable Diesel!

He's 4 months old now. We got him a month ago. Turns out he was actually born on our wedding aniversary. Neat-o, eh?

He's the wet guy lying in stinky seaweed in the pic above  ::)

Diesel likes: little dogs, peanut butter, visits to grandpa's, the kitchen floor, the banjo and little kids.

Diesel doesn't like: floors being sweeped, mopped or vacuumed,  eye booger removal, play pens, drums and garbage trucks.

I'm Diesel's personal servant, Melanie. He has two servants, the other is my husband Tom.  :)
