Hi all, Maggie came home from the dog park and is limping on her right back leg. I am hoping that this is not related to her hips - I did the appropriate due diligence with the breeder, asking to see certs on the heart, hips, elbows, kidneys, etc -- all good.  I took her to the vet and she had x-rays after given a sedative (she was zonked out of her mind) and the vet said that her hips do not look bad. She said that there is no real sign of hip dysplasia although her right sided hip does not look as good as the left.  SHe did the tests on the her knee and said that she feels some instability.  I am hoping it is not a tear because i do not want little (BIG)  MAggie to have surgery. We are treating with two weeks of deramaxx and rest (well as much rest as you can give a newfie).  Anyone have any experience with this type thing? She does not appear in pain, she lets me move the leg all around but definitely has a limp at times and does not always appear to be putting full weight on the leg.  We have fed her so that she did not put weight on too quickly (we actually free feed Science Diet and she was on large puppy until one year old). The vet did not want her getting to heavy to fast.  She is now nearing 100 pounds. My husband does not recall maggie doing anything different this time at the park than any other time.  I am worried!

Newfoundland Discussions / Maggie here, calling out to my newfie friends
« on: February 11, 2009, 08:11:46 am »
Hi .. maggie here... I am writing to all of you newfies just to tell you how much fun it is to play when your mom is away. My mom is traveling on business and I missed her so I decided to get her favorite remote and EAT IT. After that, I was still missing her so I took her pillow and guess what I found out, they are filled with all of this white stuff that is soooooooooooo good to eat.  My dad caught me when I was eating all the good white stuff so I did not get that much of it. Imagine if you all came over to my house now that my mommy is gone, we could have a newfie party and really eat some stuff. I Know where she keeps all the paper towels and toilet paper and I would share.  IT would be sooooooooooooo oo much fun.  Do not tell my mom that I am playing like this when she is gone or she will not leave me alone again....

Have a great newfie day!

Newfoundland Discussions / Who is the boss?
« on: February 10, 2009, 03:11:04 am »
Hi all,

I wanted to share a good story about Maggie and Sophia. Sophia is my petite little chow chow and as you know Maggie is my lovable newfie.  I wondered how these two would adapt to each other when we first got them, both being females and Sophia was a rescue with a sad story behind her. sophia is the most lovable little pup in the world and from the beginning, took to mothering Maggie.  I remember the day that the puppy pass wore out though, it was a different little bark that she did and Maggie understood. These girls both drink and eat out of the same bowls and really do get along well.  Sophia does all the housekeeping of Maggie, everyday -- Maggie gets her grooming. She starts with her face and then will go to her ears, flipping one at at time back to clean and then back to the right position again.  She will then move to her bottom and clean her up really well so well in fact that I think Maggie forgot that she really does own her own hiney.....  Maggie will, however, place Sophia wherever she wants her and she will usually pick her up to do so. I work at home and one day i was on a conference call sitting in the corner of my sectional, Sophia was in the front of the side of the couch sleeping, All of a sudden, the Sophia started to slide backward. At first, I thought there was a ghost but I stood up to see that Maggie had her by the tail and was moving her to the kitchen, I was hilarious.  I do think that even though the puppy is three times the size of sophia -- sophia is the boss lady.

I will have to post more pictures for you all to see -- I am having trouble because it is telling me that my files are too large when I know they are not. May have to do with my internet connection.

Well everyone, have a great day!  Am in Atlanta waiting for a plane to go to Birminghan for business - talk to you all later!

Newfoundland Discussions / How naughty is your newfie?
« on: February 09, 2009, 04:02:44 am »
Hi all, I was wondering just how naughty the breed newfie really is.  My girl went through puppy kindergarten and learned some good behavior but she will eat anything that is not nailed down. Her favorite is paper of anytype but is not particulary partial to paper. We had a brand spanking new house when we got Maggie and now,the house needs painted (need to get washable paint on the walls instead of the builders paint), molding needs to be replaced on our stairs from being chewed up, brand new dresser in bedroom chewed.  We have to watch where everything is --- she never bothers my cell phone but has eaten my dad;s cell, the remote, many new pairs of shoes and when we got her from the breeder, I was chit chatting about my garden and she said "oh, garden really, well you wont have that next year!".  We tried the crate early on but houdini escaped each time we left her - she is so smart, she will open the latches and the last time, got out between the rails so we stopped putting her in there because i was afraid she would strangle herself trying to get out. She and Sophia are not left alone long but when they are, they are very good.  My naughty goofey newfie is just bad when we are around.  Is this typical behavior and does it change over time... she is almost 16 months old now... We just newfie proof everything now but wondered if this would change...

Newfoundland Discussions / New to board, introducing Miss Maggie
« on: February 08, 2009, 12:44:32 pm »
Hi, I am new to the board here. I have a 16 month old goofey newfie named Maggie. She is so adorable and precious and very very fresh!  At 16 months old, still very very very much a puppy.  I had been looking for a newfie forum on the internet for a while and stumbled on to this one. I also have a 2 year old chow chow rescue named Sophia. Sophia and Maggie are best of friends. We got them within one day of each other so Sophia became mommy to her great big puppy and still mothers  her to this day although Maggie will pick Sophia up and put her wherever she wants her to be, really quite funny! So this to say hello to all you big paw newfie onwners!
