Kuvasz Pictures / PUPS KEEPING COOL!
« on: August 05, 2006, 10:02:37 pm »
It has been sooo hot here!  90 plus degrees!  I kono,I know, that is NOT really "hot" compared to some areas you all live in, but for us it is atrocious!  Our grass is actually dying!  We don't EVER have to water, it is just "green" I went out to mow and ACTUALLY got "told" by hun that it was not "allowed"!!!!He is a yard freak!  It is always "clean cut and looks grand!"  apparently, unknown to me, (I guess I am a bit "slow" in this area that if I mow it will be totally brown and look terrible!  ( Kids actually mow but I supervise that, they were so like SWEET we can go to the lake with the dogs YEAH!!!")  Abyway we are changing the pools int he kennel at least twice daily, and I swear to get the green crap that grows on the sides is almost impossible to keep up with.  I gave up scrubbing every tiem and just spray the heck out of the pools when I change them.  The pups can't seem to get the clue that there are THREE pools and must congregate in one!  The only little boy left gets "rolled" by the girls and poor baby waits until they are done with their fun to be the lone ranger covered in mud cooling off!  He is totally a honey and one of the favorites!  I did try sitting int he pool when it filled, just to cool off myself but the little buggers thought I was free game and I almost drowned in a kiddie pool!  Just kidding!  They really did think it was grand having me down on hteir level and what a mess I was when it was all said and done!

Hope everyone is having a great Fourth!  We spent the day cleaning in the kennel, filling in holes weed whipping hte fence line where the electric runs and taking PUPPY PICTURES!!!!!  Puppies are out today to visit the other dogs and have some fun!  Myrissa picked a name for her girl, she calls her Mia, she also chose a registered name today.  OUr litter theme is music, she lieks a band called "drop dead gorgeous"  so is named "Kilde's Drop Dead Gorgeous".  I registered the other female we are keeping as "Kilde's Save All Your Love" after my husband and my song from high school.  I have not chosen a call name yet.  I hope you all enjoy the pictures and have a Happy and Safe Fourth!

Kuvasz Pictures / 5 1/2 weeks old!
« on: June 21, 2006, 07:32:13 pm »
Here are pictures of our beautiful babies!  I am keeping one, possibly 2 females this year.  I have already chosen the one, she is labeled "shana's pick"  I am also seriously considering keeping "hot pink" female.  She is the smallest girl, but very beautiful!  The only one with a delicate structure to her. The one of the little pup laying half under the dog house is also hot pink girl.  (colors they are marked with for identification) missing is the one boy who is being picked up next week.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / cross post , disturbing
« on: May 24, 2006, 04:22:06 pm »
Greetings
A couple named Holly Whited & Erick Agner adopted a pup from Pet Placement Center in Red Bank.  This pup had had her 1'st set of shots, was spayed, etc. Dr. Conley gave the pup a free wellness check. All was good & well.
This couple then began to take the pup to River Animal Hospital, Clinic East --which gave the pup a set of shots when the first set was like 6 days old,  to Dr. Kirk in Kimball & yet back to Dr. Conlee I believe---I don't want to get this all wrong--anyway they called PPC claiming to have a very sick pup & over a $300 vet bill.  They claimed they would kill the 'damn' dog--they wanted their $$ back & rid of the dog, they said they had a JRT puppy & no longer wanted this little black lab/terrier mix. The man claimed to be several different occupations including a police officer. They even went to HES. They reported HES & PPC for animal abuse, etc--etc. They are also threatening to sue HES, Dr. Conlee & PPC as well.
For a FULL story on this Heather or Jen at PPC can give you accurate & precise details.
I wish to warn all of you & vets. as well---to add to a BIG DNA  Holly Whited & Erick Agner.
They have a 256 area code BUT they have 3 addresses
Loudon,  Jasper TN., & AL.
PLEASE warn others of these criminals & most likely animal abusers too. I believe they are playing a FRAUD game & HOPE they PAY!!!
Thanks
Kelly

Kuvasz Pictures / The snow is mostly gone!!!!!
« on: April 08, 2006, 11:34:54 am »
FINALLY we are seeing 38 degree days, no snow, some serious wind on a few days, but mostly it is gorgeous and wonderful!  The neighbor rode one of his horses over the other day and the boys went for a ride, Aidan was quite quiet watching his boys near this big animal, which he has never seen before, then the next thing I know he is out of the kennel and right at the boys feet, well under the feet as they were in the saddle.  I almost had a heart attack, but he was very good, made sure everyone was ok and then went in the house.  I decided to go riding after they were done, I have an arabian/quarter but she lives in California where I am from with my parents.  It has been Ohhh ONLY 6 years since I was on a horse, years of experience did not change the TWO DAYS of agony I have been in!  Good Grief!  yesterday I was barely walking!  LOL!   Remind me to not take a 3 hour ride after 6 years off!  OUCH!!!!!!!

Ok, my husband wants to know what if anything everyone else does with all the poop,  especially with multiple dogs who poop large ammounts.  He is sure there must be some kind of recycling that can be done! Some manure does make good fertilizer...

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Owner aggression and thyroid
« on: March 11, 2006, 09:06:38 am »
This was on another board I am a member of, someone may be interested in this.  Shana

PLEASE CROSS-POST TO OTHER CANINE LISTS:
From Linda Aronson, DVM
Behaviour Department, Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary
Medicine

We still need dogs for our double blind study looking at the effect
of thyroid on owner directed aggression.  To be included in the study
dogs cannot already be on thyroid replacement therapy, and they must
show
owner directed aggression - growl, lip lift, snap or bite at least
once a
day. All costs for testing and treatment will be covered by the
research
grant, and can be co-ordinated through your own veterinarian.  Dogs
must
live in the United States of America, however.

To be included in the study the dog must meet our criteria for
owner
directed aggression and have been living in the home for at least 6
months. It is helpful if the dog also exhibits some of the signs,
however
mild, of hypothyroidism listed here:

Excessive shedding, patchy hair loss or "rat tail"

Dry skin or dull, dry haircoat

Recurrent infections (especially ear, skin and foot infections)

Tendency to gain weight

Heat seeking behavior

Increased sleep time

Hyperactivity

Slow learning

Seizures

Worried look, tragic facial _expression or looking "old"

Reduced hearing, sight and scenting ability

Chronic gastrointestin al symptoms

Loss of muscle or bladder tone

Head tilt

Change in character of bark

Exercise intolerance

Infertility, false pregnancy or weak, dying or stillborn puppies

Recurring eye infections

The dog should otherwise be in good health.  However, if there are
other
behavior problems that might also relate to poor thyroid levels, we
would be
interested in following those as well.

If your dog meets these criteria and you would like to participate,
you
should fill out the behavior assessment form located at
<http://www.petshrink.com/forms/agrform.html<about:blank>>
http://www.petshrink.com/forms/agrform.html<about:blank>  This should
be returned to
Nicole Cottam at  <mailto:nicole.cottam@tufts.edu<about:blank>>
nicole.cottam@tufts.edu<about:blank>
via e-mail or mailed to Nicole Cottam at Tufts Cummings School of
Veterinary Medicine, Behavior Department, Department of Clinical
Sciences, 200
Westboro Road, North Grafton, MA 01536.  If the dog fits our behavior
criteria, pretest forms will be sent to you to fill out recording
daily
aggression (and any other behavior problems) for 2 weeks prior to
starting
medication. Information will also be sent to you and your
veterinarian explaining
how to collect and submit the blood to Dr. Dodds at Hemopet for CBC,
biochemistry panel and full thyroid panel.  (Intact bitches should be
tested
between 3 months after the end of one season and 3 months before she
is next
due inseason.)

If your dog  is hypothyroid  or has suboptimal or  borderline
thyroid function, your veterinarian will receive either the thyroxine  or
placebo.  Only our pharmacy will know which has been dispensed,
however, should problems arise - these are not anticipated - the code can
be   broken so that the dog receives appropriate treatment.  The dog
will receive  either the name brand thyroxine or placebo for 6 weeks.
During that time  you will continue to record any daily aggression
(and other problems).  At the end of the six weeks we will break the
code.  If the dog received placebo,
then six weeks of thyroxine will be supplied, and a behavior
treatment plan
provided.

If the dog received thyroxine and improved, we will inform your
veterinarian and recommend the dog be maintained on thyroxine, we
will also
require a second blood sample to repeat the thyroid panel.  Further
behavioral
suggestions will also be made.  If the dog did not improve, you can
wean it off the thyroxine, and a behavioral plan will be suggested to
further
address the problems.  You will be contacted regularly by phone
during the 6 weeks of the study to ensure that all is going well and
to answer any
questions.  You can also contact us at any time.  The forms take only
a few minutes a day to complete, but must be completed daily, and you
will
need to make one or two visits to the vet for blood drawing.  The
three phone
calls can be scheduled at a mutually agreed upon time, and should
take less
than 5 minutes each unless you have a problem.   All costs will be
covered
by the research grant.  You will be required to sign a consent form
before
enrolling in the study.  Your veterinarian will also be kept informed
of your dog's status and results of the blood work will be sent to
him/her.

You should be prepared that your dog's behavior may not improve
through the study period, especially if it receives placebo.  We
request that you
change nothing in terms of the way the dog is handled or fed during
the
course of the study.

Thank you.

It was such a nice day today for taking pictures, picking up dog poop that is now exposed due to some melting, and working on the houses for the kids!  Beauty will be expecting her pups Early May!  Spring fever is hitting us!  I cannot wait for summer, this year I am having Aidan and Cali worked by the kids in 4h, obedience and agility.  We are going to fence part of the property, a small area to start and put out about 10 head of sheep to work with the dogs.  If that goes well, we will expand.  Exciting things planned for this summer!  Shana :D

Here are some updated pictures of the crew!  Beauty was being her normal "don't even think of takinga  picture of me!" self so I only got her once, and could not get her in the group picture!  BRAT!  She does have a mind of her own at times and cameras are one thing she has never liked.  LIfe is so busy in our world I hardly have time to post.  Just so happens Myrissa and Nic had their tonsils and adnoids out 2 days ago and I have more time to play at the computer while I look after them.  Back to work MOnday!  I hope you all enjoy the pictures!  Shana
PS  I just recieved my calendar and I LOVE IT!

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / LETTER TO THE EDITOR
« on: December 31, 2005, 04:03:26 pm »
Our letter to the editor was finally published, it can be viewed on the web at the address below.  There is also a comment section.  One comment so far which I replied to, but it takes 24-48 hours for the paper to review and put up the comments.  Apparently the lady who did comment is saying we let our dogs run free and what a lesson to learn at the puppies expense.  Anyway I had a few things to say to that and will find out later if it gets posted, probably tomorrow!  Happy New Year everyone!

Letter: Unattended traplines could be deadly to domestic pets
