Great Dane Discussions / Itchy patches on face and neck????
« on: June 04, 2006, 09:13:42 pm »
The last couple of weeks Kayzer has had itchy patches on his face and neck, I took him to my vet and she figures it is some kind of skin disorder that Great Danes get when they are about his age caused by their rappid growth and their immune system??? Has anyone ever seen this type rash before? The medication she gave him seems to be useless. It hasnt helped him at all. He is still scratching like crazy and even to the point that he draws blood. None of my other animals have anything like this so Im assuming that it isnt contageous. Any idea what it could be???
My vet said she figures it is some kind of parasite.
I have been giving him benadryl for the itching and putting polysporin on the patches and it works very well. Any other home remedies that might help my baby with his itchy scratchy problem would be great!!!
Thanks

Anything Non-Dog Related / Hubby is in Hospital
« on: May 14, 2006, 01:08:50 pm »
Hi everyone!
I havnt been on much lately because my husband went in to the hospital with Gall bladder attacks about a month and a half ago, This was kind of a scare for us because this man never gets sick and they kept him in for almost a week with an infection in his Gall bladder. To make a very long story short, he was sent home then went back to have his gall bladder removed and now this is going on a week and a half and he is still having problem after problem. Apparently our local surgeon should not be opperating on people anymore, he made a boo boo during surgery and nicked something that he shouldnt have. So far we know that he has a tear, so they call it!!! in his main byle duct and he is now in a hospital in Toronto Ontario to have it repaired. He has had a very rough week and has gone from Intensive care in our home town to a better hospital in Timmins Ontario, and now in Toronto, where he is doing much better and they have managed to drain fluid out of his tummy and get rid of some of the pain. Thankfully he is in a very good hospital now and they can actually fix the problem. WE HOPE!
The problem is that Im 8 hours away and he has to be there all by himself.... I hate it, but he insists that I save our money and stay home and wait... Im hoping for some positive news tomorrow morning as to when he will return home. Any prayers would be greatly appreciated!!!
P.S.
As for Kayzer, he is missing his daddy very much but he likes daddys spot in bed, hehehe
Still growing like crazy, he was at the vet the other day and was weighed in at 110 lbs at 61/2 months. But he is doing very well, and is very healthy. He is turning into quite the charmer. Especially with women!!!

Great Dane Discussions / Bad Breath?????
« on: March 27, 2006, 03:59:47 pm »
Suddenly Kayzer has really bad breath. Not just your normal doggy breath but really yucky! :P
I just wondered if there could be any medical reason for this??? I recently changed his food to a Giant Breed Holistic food and I thought that might be the reason.
Does this seem normal? Or not? Do 6mth old puppies usually get bad breath?
Thanks

Here are a couple of cute pics of Kayzer and his best buddy Judge that I took today. He is growing like a bad weed!  :o But he is still my little baby! He is already over 100 lbs. I think he might be slowing down a little bit now, He seems to have slowed down in the height anyway!
For the time being!!!

Well this is very exciting news, just had to share!
Kayzer will be starting Obedience training on April 3.
I just cant wait. Im sure he will try his best to embarass me, but that will be the fun in it I suppose.  :-[

I also have a question for all you helpful BPO'ers???
I will first tell the story!
A few weeks back some relatives were over visiting with their 2 1/2 year old little boy ( Demon child)
Kayzer was asleep on the floor and this kid goes over and jumps right on Kayzer and hurts him. Kayzer jumped up and growled at the kid at that time but that was it. The mother did nothing to this little boy to correct his behavior of course. She lets him treat animals any way he pleases and expects the dog to be disciplined. Not gonna happen the way she wants it done anyway! Well now Kayzer hates this little boy and he nipped him the other day, when the boy fell down near him!!! I have decided not to have these people over anymore, for this reason. BUT I have a neice that Kayzer now shows signs of mistrust toward because of this little boy! How can I make Kayzer see that not all little kids are going to hurt him? Will the obedience training help this issue?
Any comments or advice are more than welcome! Good or bad!
Thanks so much
Carole

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / HELP! showing agressive behavior
« on: February 19, 2006, 03:04:51 pm »
So far Kayzer has been really good ,not showing any signs of agression. BUT the other day Kayzer snapped at my 3 year old niece when she went to take a piecs of kleenex away from him! :'( Then last night he was eating a rawhide bone and when I patted his head he growled at me so I kept petting him and slowly moved my hand down his face while talking to him, then the little bugger snapped at me! >:(
I really do not want this to be a problem and would like to do whatever I can now before he gets to big!!! He is almost 18 weeks old now. The weird thing is that you can play with him while he eats and you can stick your hand right in his dish while he is eating and he couldnt care less, because I did this right from day one. It just seems to be something new that he has decided to do.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

Treatment & Preventative Meds / Pics of ear surgery (Not to graphic)
« on: February 16, 2006, 07:32:11 pm »
Queenie had a hematoma on her ear lanced last week and I was so surprised at the way they treated it that I thought I would share some photos so everyone could see. The green stuff on her ear is actually x-ray film that is sewn right to her ear to prevent the fluid from filling up again. She has to have this on for 14 days. She is also on antibiotics for 14 days. It is healing really nice and I dont think you will even be able to tell she ever had surgery once they remove it.
Has anyone ever seen this kind of treatment before?

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Spay surgery Question?
« on: February 13, 2006, 01:30:27 am »
Queenie was Spayed last Wednesday and she seems to be doing fine but her stitches look a little tight and red to me and I noticed she has what kind of looks like a lump beside her incision??? Sha hasnt been very active but she wasnt very active to begin with! There is no discharge at all and it looks nice and clean. Do you think this is normal or should I take her and have it looked at???
She is the first dog I have ever had spayed and I dont really know what to watch for???? Help please! :-\

Border Collie Discussions & Pictures / Queenie is recovering from surgery
« on: February 08, 2006, 01:28:04 am »
My Collie mix Queenie had to have surgery on her ear today from a Hematoma. She developed a large water blister type thing on her ear after having an ear infection . I assume it was from scratching at her ear to much. She gets ear infections all the time but this time it was much worse for some reason. While she was in for her ear I decided to have her spayed at the same time and Im kind of worried about her as she is going to be nine years old this year. She could use all the prayers she can get.
I spoke to the vet this afternoon and she is doing great, she said she has a bandage over her ear so she looks kind of sad but the surgeries both went great. She said her spay was a little bit complicated, because she is a bit over weight.
The spay was never a big issue before because there arent any male dogs around but now that I have brought Kayzer into the picture I was a little concerned that he might find Queenie a little to attractive once he comes of age!!! :o Also Queenie has been having false pregnancy's her last couple of heats so this was the only way to insure her health and to stop them. Has anyone else had a female dog have these?
Well thanks for listening. I always feel better once I share my worries with my BPO friends!
Queenie will be coming home tomorrow!
