Rottweiler Discussions / Re: I HATE people like this
« on: October 05, 2005, 09:28:30 am »
I have heard of keeping your puppy for a week or so away from anyone but the people that live in the house to build
the pack bond...but not for aggression.  That kind of thing sounds like a big no-no in the rottie world.  Why would anyone
want to do that to a rottie?  They have all of that built in already.  Rotties just know intuitively who is the good guy and who isn't.
My Daisy reminds me all of the time that most people are good. :)

Rottweiler Discussions / more Daisy updates...

ahhhh!! As if life wasn't tough enough with going to chemo, Daisy started to limp a few weeks ago on the leg she had ACL surgury
on last winter.  The vet took an x-ray and he suspects that she has bone spurs.  How painful it must be for her.  I gave in and started
giving her Deramaxx.  She took her first pill today and her mood lightened up.  I think it brought her some relief.  I really wanted to do
everything natural and holistic for her but sometimes you just have to do what you have to do.  I added more gluco and chrondroitin
to her growing list of supplements too.  Daisy takes such good supplements it would keep a person alive until 100!!  Which if she lives
to be 10 years old she would actually be 100 in people years!  I hope everyone is doing good here at Big Paws.  Where would
we all be without our four-legged buddies?  I'm so glad that I have my little yellow lab to soak up all my tears one day after Daisy passes
over the rainbow bridge.  I keep asking at my vet's office to get a support group started.  :)

Rottweiler Discussions / Daisy doing great!
« on: September 24, 2005, 08:40:14 pm »
Hello!  It's been quite some time since I've lasted posted here!  We've been busy going to chemo once a week, researching home-cooked diets,
and just overall enjoying the time we have together.  Daisy decided she wanted to swim with our yellow lab this past month too.
She has always AVOIDED water at all costs except for drinking it.  After her diagnosis she made the leap and now every other day
she enjoys a good long swim.  The chemo hasn't affected her much except for some digestive upset.  She is up to 103 pounds and
she is the image of good health.  Thanks for all of your puppy prayers and keep them coming!

Rottweiler Discussions / nippy terrier

ha, I had a good laugh the other day, This lady was outside of a restaurent with her terrier-maybe Parson's mix??  He was cute and had one eye missing. She told my husband that our 3 year old son could pet him.  I walked up at this point and thanked her, took my son by the hand to walk away, as we did-the dog bit my husband on the back of his leg!! It didn't break the skin, but it sure did startle him!!  I told the lady that she ought to be thankful that it wasn't my son and to have a nice evening.  I laughed so hard as we all walked away.  -thankful myself that it wasn't our son.  Then on the way home my husband got the lecture about approaching strangers to have our son pet their dog.
He was thrilled to listen as you can imagine.  He thinks he knows it all
and so do I.

Rottweiler Discussions / Re: Dogs swallowing what?
« on: September 16, 2005, 09:14:39 pm »
I thought that Daisy swallowed a rubber band once.  The vet said to give her hydrogen peroxide to make her vomit.  She did.  NO band.
I was so mad at my husband for leaving that rubber band on the floor...
it came around the mail.  I watched her all night, I fretted and worried.
The next morning I found it on the carpet.  She never ate it in the first
place.   I never told my husband.  I wanted him to always be more careful.  Our yellow lab will eat and chew on anything.  I watch
her as close as possible.  She loves toilet paper rolls.  ???
Dogs are so funny!

Hi! The second chemo treatment went well, and I'm accumulating some great recipes to make for her!
It's true the carbs aren't good for her right now.  I'm slowly working out the kibble and the vet said
no milk in her food.  Ah, back to the store!  I'm looking for a really big pot to make her food in.
Daisy loves the idea that she needs to gain some more weight.  We're hoping to put a few pounds
on before the next treatment.  Her cancer is in remission for now.  It must be because there are so
many paws crossed out there for her!  She is even going to get a visit from her best doggie friend
that she hasn't seen in two years, a Rhodesian Ridgeback.  They have known each other since
they were puppies.  It should be a great reunion!

Daisy has a very delicate stomach is why I'm cooking the food a bit.  She is on a supplement called One Step- it is a complete meal
in itself with all of the vitamins and minerals.  I add bone meal too, digestive enzymes, and pro-bac, oh & fish oil.  The food I am preparing for her
is organic ground sirloin, whole milk, eggs- lightly scrambled, green beans, some flaxseed bread, garlic, and olive oil.  I've got a 2 week supply
in the freezer.  I am doing all kinds of reading up on how to make food for dogs and what should go in it.  It's tricky- I have a couple of books
coming in the mail about it.   The look on Daisy's face when I am putting her food together is priceless.   She knows that it's for her.
Cancer patients need more protein and fat I've read and my vet said it's true also.  I guess it isn't good when a cancer patient gets too skinny-
We go Tuesday for more chemo.  This is still like very surreal.  I want to wake up tomorrow morning and have everything back to normal.

Daisy is on all new supplements now, I wish I would have put her on them years ago.  I've learned so much about
lymphoma from a book I got from amazon this weekend.  It's called "Sparky fights back" and it's about an Austrailian Terrier
that has the same and what the dog and the owners went through.   I'm still scared but it's sinking in and we're doing our
best to fight back too.  Daisy has a strong disposition and she is very healthy otherwise.  I am still cooking the food-
and mixing it with a little of Solid Gold too.  She gets really excited when she sees the food coming off of the stove and
into her food bowl!  I give my lab a little too so she doesn't feel left out.  :)
Thanks for all of your support.  Only other "dog people" can truly understand.  You wouldn't believe the crap we
are hearing from both sides of our families about the money being spent.  It's just absurd.  Oh, well.
I'll keep posting...

Rottweiler Discussions / Anyone had a dog go thru chemo?
« on: August 05, 2005, 08:41:10 pm »
Hi,  Daisy started chemotherapy on Tuesday this week.  Has anyone gone thru this with their dog?  I just don't know
what to expect and I'm pretty scared.  I'm working up the nerve to switch her to a raw diet, but I got weirded out
and heated up the mix I made for on the stove.  I guess I have two questions, one about chemo, and the other
if anyone has any tips on raw diets while their dog is going to chemo.  I saw a holistic vet on Thursday and I've
got Daisy on some great supplements to go along with the raw diet and to help her support her immune system.
Gosh, I have been so upset about this that I am not able to eat and I'm crying and frustrated that the
best friend of my life has stinking cancer!  There is just no simple answer I know, everything from the treatment
to her food, to the supplements to her side effects from this crap is so overwhelming!  I'm the type of person
who works hard to fix stuff and there is no "fix" here.  I am trying to do all I can so that I won't have to say to myself
that I didn't do enough or I didn't try it.   Then I'm trying to stay focused on being positive around Daisy and keeping
life as normal as possible for her.  She is just the greatest little rottie ever.  I'm sorry for being so irrational.
Some of my posts I'm plain nuts.  I love my dog too much.

please don't send Loki away.
Listen to what these folks say on this website.
My rottie is six and just got diagnosed with Lymphoma.
I don't know how I would ever live without her.
I'm sure that your relationship with Loki will be the same.
Rotties share very deep bonding with their people.
At some point around 18 months of age Loki will
mature a bit more.  Then at 2 a bit more, then you
have a remarkable companion.  Do some more training, down, stay,
you could even teach Loki an off command--from your Pom.
Take Loki for a good walk early in the day before it gets too hot.
Please don't send Loki away.

the ones who just don't get it yet.  :)
