don't know the full extent of surgery, yet, but it will be quite major...and him just lying against me probably won't be a good. i will miss him if I board him, but, it might be best for my recovery. :P

Hi again!
Well, I just adopted my dog about a month ago.  LOVE HIM.  However, I also just got diagnosed w/cancer (totally unexpectedly) and will be facing major surgery soon.  I live alone. How will I take care of my dog when I first get home?  Should I board him out for the first week? Maybe get a doggie sitter once a day to walk him?  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hi!
My new dog has just started scratching his left ear more than his right.  ??? I assumed his sudden scratching was due to fleas (I took him to a dog park and guess what he came home with?  Yes, that's taken care of). He doesn't scratch anything excessively, just notice he scratched his one ear more than the other.

Am I being rediculously obssessive?  Haven't had a dog in 12 years, so a bit out of practice. :-[   ::)

So took my big doggie to a dog park for the first time.  He loved it!  Only weird thing.....he didn't play w/the other dogs, he ran around like a loon, and in the process, he introduced himself to every single person there and went belly-up asking for belly rubs!   :D

do your Aussies behave like that?  he's such a clown sometimes!   ;D

FAQs about puppies / Re: Eating poop

my big goof eats the cat poop out of the litter box!  :P

thanks!  I'll try that.  generally, he listens when I tell him "NO" about something & stops doing whatever that is.  However, the kitchen is a different Oprah! He waits until I turn my back to do it.  ::)

Somebody at work suggested cookie sheets, so they'd crash when he tried doing that.  All that did was add to the mess he ended up creating on the floor.  Noise didn't bother him one bit.   ::)

Did I mention that he knows how to open cupboards and doors as well?   :D

Yes, I was told how smart this guy was....what a character!   :D

waaayyyyy too much!  He's a big guy so sticking his paws and nose up there is easy.  So far he has succeeded in getting literally EVERYTHING off my counter (what a mess!!!!) and has gone so far as to take a dish out of the kitchen sink!?!   :o  He has only done this when I've done something foolish - like leave the area to use the bathroom or get clothes out of the dryer.  No I can't block off the area.

Any ideas as to get this big clown to knock it off?!  he's gonna get hurt one of these times (like when he knocked over a crockpot full of food) & I don't want that!

I just rescued my guy last weekend from So. Calif Aussie Rescue......ve ry smart, and a bit of a smartazz as well  ;D  He's starting to get to know my two cats....my 4 lb cat went nose to nose w/my 80 lb beast....and he did what doggies do....he got up and sniffed the cat's butt....I think the cat jumped 4 ft. in the air w/a priceless look on his face!  Chance (my doggie) did a little dance like he was proud of himself.  If I only had a video.  I'm still laughing!   :D

Did you get your new pup this weekend?
Yes I did!  I'm so happy with him! What a great dog!  He's very smart and has quite the personality!  Almost a bit of a smart-azz already!  LOL!  And, if it's this good already, he'll be wonderful when he's settled in, realizing this is his new home.

Don't think my cats have figured out he's here to stay, yet, but they're all doing fine w/eachother.

Not going to fool around w/meeting the Akita other than at a very great distance and not until he's totally comfortable.

Best thing I've done in years is adopting this guy!   ;D

Thanks.  I don't expect this to go well.  Although he is great w/people, he is very aggressive w/other animals & will try to kill them.
Guess we'll keep them seperated.   :(
Thanks for responding - appreciate it!   :)

OK, I am adopting a 5 yr old Aussie this weekend  ;D.  However, my fiance has a 9 yr old Akita.  Having read some of the posts in this section....Do you have any advice as to how to sucessfully introduce them and ultimately have them tolerate eachother?  There won't be any worries w/the Aussie, but we're very concerned about the Akita.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Training issue w/Aussie????
« on: April 22, 2009, 09:48:54 am »
Hi!

As you know, I'm about to adopt a 5 yr old Aussie.  He's pretty well trained....how ever.....he's very large in comparison to me (he weighs 70 lbs & I weigh 100 soaking wet).....

When he recently visited I saw a potential problem (although he's very well behaved in every other respect).

He tried to go tearing out the front door the minute I opened it.  He did not listen to my commands or respond to the leash pull.  :o  My question is this...how do I stop this once he has moved in permanently??  Seriously, I could barely keep him from running out or bowling me over.  He's significantly stronger than me.   ???

No, it doesn't mean I won't adopt him, it just means I need some advice as to how to train him NOT to do that.

if he's going to be in a yard by himself, he might take matters into his own hands.  lol

he'll be in the backyard by himself during the day....it's some grass and a few very mature trees.....and I dare him to try to dig up a tree!  If he digs back there, he's likely to get nothing but big tree roots (why I haven't been able to plant anything else).  He visited again this past weekend (get to keep him the first of June)....he's very very smart ::), wants attention & a job, and will no doubt keep me on my toes :D ;D

:D just gave my 2 Persians the Lion Cut.....they look so rediculous...b ut they're strutting around that house like a couple of Peacocks!    :D ;D ::)

They make tall dog gates with little openings for small dogs or cats. Might work.

hmmm.....but then how do I effectively get in & out of my own kitchen ???....oh the worries of getting an addition to my 'family'.   ;D
