I get whole dog journal as well and they said that they are going to review the "grain free" dog food separately in next month's issue.

Thanks to everyone for responding!  I'm still hoping to get another puppy within a year or year-and-a-half.  Bentley will be around 4 then.  Do you think that is too old?

I was wondering if it would be easier in some ways (which someone just mentioned)...because he really seems to be craving a dog playmate.

And yes...I do own a Dyson:)

Thanks again to everyone!

Newfoundland Discussions / Should I get another newfie?

Hi everyone!  I'm not so good at posting on these things but I know that this is the place to come for good info on big dogs:)  I have a 3 year old landseer newfoundland who LOVES other dogs.  I am really thinking about getting another dog for him (and me:)  I have just become such a sucker for the newfies that I can't even think about getting another breed (except for maybe a newfie mix).  I was just wondering if the people that had 2 large, slobbery, hairy teddy bears would encourage or discourage this.  Any advice would be great.

Thanks!

My dog used to do this with select items (socks, towels and the remote).  He never bit me but he would growl if I tried to pull it away.  With my dog at least, redirecting him works.  I get a handful of treats, then make him sit & down (or whatever combination of exercises your dog likes to do) and then he will immediately drop whatever he has.  Then I reward him graciously.  He is getting much better about dropping stuff quickly but I don't know if I'll be able to figure out how to make him stop picking the stuff up:)

Good luck.

Sorry.  I guess I should have included that information:)  I live in Richmond, Virginia.

It seems like most people on this are from the west coast but I am thinking about getting another newfie in the future and wondered if anyone knew of any breeders they would recommend on the east coast.  I know looking for close breeders isn't the best way but I would like to go check the place out before I get a puppy from there.

I am saddened by the thought that going to the dog park is a bad idea.  Bentley absolutely lives for it!  At the park we go to, the owners are usually really attentive.  I've only ever seen 1 real possible fight but both dog owners got involved quickly and removed their dogs.

I guess we should feel very lucky.

Does anyone know how I could get started with water work?  I live in Richmond, Virginia.  I e-mailed the local newfie club but didn't receive a response.  Bentley doesn't have any experience but I think he would really enjoy it so I was hoping to get some help in getting started.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Well.  The vet ruled out parasites and she thinks it is stress colitis.  She said to try feeding the canned pumpkin.  We went on a short weekend trip and I fed him pumpkin with his food.  It actually worked!  We are very excited:)

Thanks to everyone for your advice.  I tried a couple of tablespoons of canned pumpkin yesterday and he loved it.  However, this morning I was awoken by a sick puppy.  He isn't eating anymore and is moping around.  We are going to the vet as soon as they open.

I will let everyone know what he says.

Thanks again!

Newfoundland Discussions / Can Newfoundlands have Irritable Bowel Syndrome?
« on: February 28, 2006, 11:48:58 am »
Hello everyone!  I have a 1 year-old landseer newfie (I know I need to upload a cute picture of him) and he seems to have a very sensitive digestive tract.  It seems like every time we go away for a weekend he has diarrhea when we come home.  I've been careful to not change his food or treats so I'm not sure what to make of it.  I don't think it is anything serious, because it only happens when his routine changes.  I was wondering if anyone else has had experience with this?

Thanks!
