« on: April 05, 2006, 04:20:05 pm »oh, DANGIT he's cute! did you get him from the pound? i mean, are you sure he is 1/2 and 1/2? he REALLY looks like an ACD, but i don't really see the aussie....just wondering!
Possitive that he's 1/2 and 1/2. We got him from an Australian Shepherd breeder. The mom is 100% aussie and the neighbor's naughty ACD let himself into their yard at the "wrong time of the month"... Mick's pretty mild mannered so far. Zoe just puts her big paw on his head when she's tired of his antics.

Here's our new baby. He's really only going to be a medium-sized paw, but I wanted to share. He's 12 weeks old. 1/2 Australian Shepherd and 1/2 Australian Cattle Dog. His name is Mick Foster... gotta have a middle name for when they get in trouble.

I think the puppy is doing this now because it just occured to him. He is a mischevious little puppy with new found freedom. Perhaps just being allowed the run of the house kept him entertained for the fist month of his freedom, now the inherant excitement has worn off and he is looking for some fun times!

I agree with Ronda. It's a puppy thing and it's probably become a habit...a very fun habit for puppy. I bet if you go back to the crate or gating-off for a while, you could break her of the habit. Just have to keep a close eye for awhile longer...

Yes, it's a great tool! How much did you pull off of your newfies? I get a plastic grocery bag full when I furminate Zoe... maybe I should do it more often.

We got our crate from J-B Wholesale (www.jbpet.com) 48x30 inch crate at 99.99.
For the crate bedding....... I just made this over the weekend! I got a twin size egg crate from the bedding department at Wal-Mart. I got a heavy denim fabric ($1 per yard on clearance...co uld also use duck cloth) and made a pillowcase-type cover. Cut the egg crate to fit and slip it inside the fabric cover. I also added a waterproof pad for "just in case". It fits perfectly and I think that the egg crate stuff is what they use in those expensive orthopedic beds. Cheap, cheap and exactly what we needed.

I'm not really sure what's so different about the FURminator than the other stripping tools. I don't have any of those. I asked a friend of mine, who is a professional groomer, and she recommended the FURminator highly. People will come into her shop just to have their dogs FURminated. The cost is a bit much, however I don't have to take her in to be professionally groomed now either. It doesn't hurt her and it pulls just the undercoat part out, which is apparently where most shedding occurs. I was also glad that it came in a larger size for my larger dog. Good luck!

I have the FURminator. It works wonders on both my Saint AND my friends Golden Retriever. It's a fantastic tool!

I agree about getting up at night also. I know it's a pain, but necessary. It's like having a newborn baby. Probably the biggest piece of advice I have about potty training is to just stick with it. One day she will "get it" and then it will be done. At least that has been my experience. Good luck!

I know that I have to be careful with the amount of exercise for giant breeds, especially while they're growing, but how much is too much? I like to do a lot of walking... 4 miles per day/5-6 times per week. I used to take my spaniel mix who had no trouble keeping up, but sadly he's gone now. I have been hesitant to take Zoe that much, but I miss my walking buddy. She's almost 15 months. What do you all think would be safe?

I have been thinking the same thing with my Zoe. She had a slow start in her life and was underweight because she got parvo just before she came to live with us. Certainly she has gotten tall over the past year, but she's not really "padded". She's currently just shy of 15 months now.
You mentioned trying the Satin Balls. I made my first batch this weekend and am supplementing her kibble with 2 meatballs per day (about 3 full tablespoons each). We'll see how that works.
I agree that this breed fills out more after the first year, so we need to be patient. I think Bubba looks very svelte.
