Big Dogs with Jobs / Re: Rally Obedience
« on: October 16, 2006, 02:07:21 pm »
Rally is FUN!

Finnegan our Newfie has his Rally Novice A title.  We also had to work very hard for every point. :) Finnegan thinks heeling is booooring so it takes lots of encouragement from me to keep him interested.  And usually the courses are designed for MUCH smaller dogs.  We have a GREAT time playing in Rally and the big dogs definately get lots of attention since its not common to see them participate.

So happy there are other big dogs out there representing! LOL

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Re: raisin toxicity
« on: September 22, 2006, 03:49:11 am »
Yes I heard about this before but I think the dog would have to eat a large amount of raisins for his/her size for them to be dangerous.  I know that my puppers had eaten a raisin here or there before I heard about this and they were fine.  Obviously since there can be a risk is better just to avoid them alltogether.

Rosie is absolutely beauuutiful! I love it when Finnegan gets spurts of hyperness and zooms around a bit.  Finnegan would looove to play with pretty Rosie!

I'm sorry that you had a disappointing visit w/ the Fila at the SPCA  :( but as they say everything happens for a reason and perhaps he wasn't meant to be with your family.  Big time kudo's to you for doing your homework though!  I would be hesitant to bring a Fila home with little ones only because you'll be having lots of strange little kids in and out of your house at some point.

I would second, third, forth???? LOL the suggestion about a Newf or Newf mix. We share our home and heart with Finnegan a 5 year old Newf and he is just AWESOME with kids.  He actually cries and whines when he sees children because he wants to go and see them.  Their size alone is a great deterrent for possible threatening people.  Lots of people cross the street when I walking Finnegan because he is huge and black, even though he's the sweetest dog ever.

I also have a Dane that is great with kids, although much more boisterious that the Newf. She is VERY active although that is not "usually" a breed trait.  It can vary depending on their lines.

I have met many OEM's that were wonderful family dogs although I know someone that just returned hers to her breeder because the dog was less trustworthy around strange children.

Good luck with your search!

Ohhh my goodness how exciting!!! Mom and Dad are both stunning.  Although in that pic of Momma pregnant she looks about as comfortable as I was at 9 months.  LOL

Cannot wait to see puppy pics!

Awww what a sweet pup!  I can only imagine how excited you all must be.  I think Cobalt is the perfect name for a blue Dane.  Can't wait to see more pics when you bring him home.

Collars, crates, & other cool things / Re: boo! big paw costumes?
« on: September 20, 2006, 02:00:10 am »
Oh my goodness the costumes are toooo cute!

Well I actually used to make custom costumes before our son was born in March.  I dress up the pooches every year.  Finnegan was a cowboy once while Hexi was the horse.  ;D

Here is the costume that always gets the most attention.  Finnegan's Kissing Booth costume. LOL

Thank so much everyone!  I have a rake that I use on the rest of Finn's fur but its sooo hard to get the rake through the fur on his tail and bum.  The fur there is a different texture and not soft and fluffy like the rest of his fur.

Oh my goodness what a GORGEOUS group of pooches.  They are just stunning and those pics sure do show what Newfs are really like.

They look so soft and fluffy!
