Great Pyrenees Discussions / Re: My dog was murdered last weekend
« on: August 31, 2009, 10:20:31 am »
I am sorry for ANYONE that looses a memeber of thier family, human or not! This is horrific, I can't imagine what I would do. I feel for both of you and do not think that anyone has the right to down you. You loved your dogs, you were on here telling about them as part of your consolement period as I know most people would not understand why you could be so upset. I have always looked at everyone on this board as an extended family member, I have been lurking a lot lately and have noticed it has changed so much. That is why I don't post here as often as I once did. Accidents happen, it is everyone's worst nightmare. This is a local story here that did not envolve a dog, but to show that no one is perfect....ove r a month ago a family was walking on the sidewalk their 1 yr old was in the stroller with the proper attachments. A car ran up on the sidewalk and hit the family including the stroller...the child is getting better and will be out of the hospital soon, but using the judgement that some on here use would you call it the parent's fault? NO, I would hope NOT. I believe this is the same type of accident, dogs can jump fences, dig under them, go through them, break leads and leashes or the same type of incident could happen when walking your dog on a leash. As posted before no one is perfect and for someone that has a dog not to sympathatize with this is udderly ridiculous. I have been deciding on whether or not to leave the board and this type of posts just makes my blood boil. I only hope that both of you continue posting and do not leave, as this board can and will help you.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Re: VERY naughty malamute!!
« on: August 26, 2009, 09:48:08 am »
I actually pull Adak back and in the other direction. Our daily walks started taking forever just to leave my road (4 houses down) but now, I have walking him with a baby stroller, no special collars or leash. Sometimes he get a wild side and tries me. I simply stop, warn him, and make him sit. If he continues, we go the other direction. We walked last night, by dogs, cats (which is hard at times), and other people with his leash up on my shoulder with a lot of slack. It takes time, but is so worth it.

At 6 months old he is very smart with what he knows. Make learning a game and fun for him. Also with malamutes a 1 mile walk is nothing to them. Still watch for him to tire as his bones and muscles are still growing and ALWAYS walk on leash, what I do is incorporate learning into the walk. We walk, stop sit, paw, down, stay, wait. Just randomly chose a command at a stop sign or any place during the walk. Also, for the stealing socks, well that is a fun game for him try to give him a more "high" value treat as a trade. Another thing is NILIF (Nothing In Life Is Free) he wants to learn and wants to obey, you just need to teach him how. Make him sit for his food, before he goes out, before strangers pet him. I just put the leash on inside the house and make him realize I am ALPHA and still do at times with my 2.5 year old male malamaute. And as posted before, a tired puppy is a GOOD puppy.

Good Afternoon fellow BPO members, I spoke with a rep. from TNAMR and they received a call at a high kill shelter of an owner surrender male and female malamutes at 8am about 2 weeks ago, they quickly gathered to pick up the dogs and when arrived found out the female was not only pregnant but delivering puppies. The mom and dad are in the process of being adopted, ofcourse dad first as mom needs to be with the puppies. In order to foot the expense of the puppies the rescue is selling Fleece tug ropes, blankets, and other items. I have ordered some for Adak, and all have been tested by malamutes and are very chew friendly. The same ropes are sold at local pet stores for $12 and they are selling for $5/each. Please see the following link for information on the ropes and items as well as the puppies. If anyone has questions, please let me know.

I agree, that is just the trainers way of thinking, like when they told me not to let Adak sleep with me or in my room. Occasionally I wake up and Adak is up there in "HIS" spot at the bottom of the bed. He does not challenge me and come to the head of the bed unless invited for rubs, but would rather be directly under the ceiling fan or on the floor on his spot. It is a personal preference, my belief once trained let them sleep where they want. Adak goes to bed on the floor on my side of the bed every night around 10pm, no questions asked literally gets up and goes in there and waits on me. I was even told by a trainer not to let Adak in my son's room before or after I had him, that would have been a HUGE mistake, Adak knows, when bryce is in there alone and the door is cracked that means NO ENTRY unless mom says so and he will lie outside the door. Go with your instinct. I am sure he will be just fine  :-*

Anything Non-Dog Related / Re: My Poor Little Rose (Ear Infection)

We have been battling them since Jan. Bryce is now 7 months and we ended up getting tubes, but with the first one, really just motrin or tylenol, since she is older motrin is best. you can also take a warm rag and hold to her ear. Bryce would sleep on my chest with one hand over his ear to keep the pain low. Good luck, it should go away in a few days. :-*

I fed Eagle Pack holistic to Adak when he was  younger, love the food, the key with him was to keep him very lean as was posted before,  you don't want her to grow to fast. It does not produce extrememly hard poop, but it is hard enough.

BTW...Sam is a cutie!

Treatment & Preventative Meds / Re: Giardia help please
« on: December 23, 2008, 06:40:42 am »
I hate to hear he has giardia. It can take forever to get rid of. Clorox everything, even with the moisture in the air, still do it. Make sure all poo outside it picked up and pour bleach on the spots, throw out all chew toys except the ones that can be sanitized. Also when he comes in from outside wipe his feet with warm soapy water this can help prevent re-contamination from the outside. I had a dog that took 3 treatments before it was over, I literally coloroxed twice a day until it was gone.

Alaskan Malamute Discussions / Re: Introducing a female Dog
« on: December 13, 2008, 01:34:48 pm »
I am very partial to malamutes, yes I strongly agree study Akitas first, I was going to get one then decided on another malamute. Don't get me wrong they are wonderful dogs, but if dominance and aggression is an issues definitely study them and breeders, I have met some of the nicest and friendliest Akitas then also met some that don't tolerate any other dogs (then again, most of that is breeding and owners) Good luck!

Edited to add...Same sex agression is very relevant in malamutes, the breeder I got adak from will not sell two dogs of the same sex to anyone, males are more dominant than females, right now at the age of 2 they are going through pack order, but to answer, yes neutering the other male may help.

I really love malamutes! I could not ask for better, over a year and still as sweet as pie.

Sure, I wish I would have done things differently. Please feel free to pm me with any questions. It was not as easy as I thought and i do wish I would have done some things differently to prepare Adak. He was a bit stressed out at first and I had to resort to NILIF(Nothing In Life Is Free)and use the crate for the first few days as a "time out" and "de-stresser" for Adak, and include a bone or something for him to chew on so he knew he was not in trouble. Josh brought home the first hat and shirt Bryce wore and Adak sniffed and licked both of them. I would suggest playing sounds of babies crying and let the dogs hear them, that is what stressed Adak out the most then he wanted to kiss Bryce all the time, we have designated times now ie...first thing in the morning and when I say it is ok. When we brought Bryce home I came in first and gave Adak pets and loved on him then Josh brought the car seat in and let him sniff Bryce, he really did not know what to think and was panting very heavily and going poop a lot and it was runny for a few days. I called our breeder and asked for advice, Adak was a little jealous and also protective over Bryce at the same time and would nudge me and get in Bryce's face a lot. She suggested leash in house, like I did when he was a puppy to boundary train and re-establish my role as ALPHA, which I lost when I was pregnant and it worked. A lot of treats and praise when he would walk around the baby and after a few more days he was doing better, now when Bryce cries he it does not bother him, but if Bryce is in the bassinet and not in the same room Adak will come and look at me then we walk together to get Bryce. Really a lot of patience which when I left the hospital I was exhausted and understanding that to the dogs you are bringing a "puppy" or unknown thing in that is taking mommy's attention and mommy is holding a lot give them a "time out to relax place" that is comforting to them incase they stress and remember, it gets a lot better in a few days after you rest and get use to new routines (which change). When Bryce is sleeping and I am not, I designated special time for Adak, I will lie in the floor and pet him and love on him, or if i am holding Bryce and Adak comes up I ask him to sit and rub on him with my other hand that is not holding Bryce.

Holy COW!!! I have not heard of this mix before. I can tell you when an Artic Wolf is bred with a malamute or husky, they eat a little more than a normal mal or husky and do tend to be more prey driven.
