General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / New airline just for pets
« on: June 03, 2009, 06:28:45 am »
I just saw this on MSNBC & thought that everyone might be interested.  I love the idea of an airline that flies pets in coach, not cargo.

Food Discussion & Information / Re: shes not eating.....help!
« on: June 01, 2009, 08:55:38 pm »
I hope that the canned food does the trick.  If not, a tablespoon or two of cottage cheese stirred into her kibble will often do the trick, too.  If she has loose stools though from the cottage cheese, I'd stick to the canned foods.

Welcome!  She's sure a pretty pup!

Awwwwww, toooooo cute!  It sure looks like they took to it like ducks!  Haven't I heard of some Newfs though on BPO that weren't especially fond of water at first?  That's what I have stuck in me beedy brain anyway.  ;)  ;D  It's great that your two loved it so quickly.  Someday I'd love to watch some Newfies in the water.  :-*

Awwww, welcome Cooper!  What a gorgeous guy he is!  I have to 2nd, 3rd or ? pumpkin advice.  We've also used it with good results.  Also, if you have the stomach for it, you can buy a clipper and use it to maintain his potty patch yourself.  I have a clipper that I use to keep my pups hiney's clipped so they stay clean and I also use it to clip the fur between their pads so that they don't slip on our hard floors in between the area rugs & runners, since that's so hard on their joints.  It's a very handy tool for life with a big furry buddy!

Gosh Tricia, what a wonderful cause.  I just wish that I had a Polaroid camera so that I'd have some film to donate.  Unfortunately, I don't, but I'll sure ask around.  I hope that you find lots!

Awwww Lyn, I'm so sorry.  It's hard to lose a beloved family member and also very hard to see our parents so sad.  We've gone through this a few times over the last couple of years as my Mom & Dad have one-by-one lost their sweet old dogs, and it is so hard.  They have just one left and Dad is bringing her up with him to spend the summer with us again in a few weeks.  At 17 now we know that Muffy's time is short & I'm worried about how my dad will take her loss, too.  I'm so sorry for all of your loss.  :'(

Regarding adding a new member to the family, I sympathize b/c it takes me time to grieve, too.  However, I wonder if you were to foster a dog for a little while if your Mom wouldn't fall in love with him or her.  ;)  Especially if he or she had the type of personality that your parents are usually drawn to.  Do you think that that might work?  In any case, your parents are blessed to have your love & support during this sad time.  :-*

Happy Birthday, Ursa!  Can it really be a year already?  Whew, time is flying by.  Funny that you call Ursa your "pocket Pyr" b/c that's what I've called Cassie since we adopted her.  It's the first thing I thought of when I first saw her.  She's big boned, at least that's what she's been telling me ever since her last vet check when she went on a diet; but she's not very tall, so she's my "pocket Pyr", too.  ;)  :-*

Remembering those no longer with us. / Re: RIP Tanner
« on: March 24, 2009, 07:40:18 pm »
Marina, please pass on my heartfelt condolences to Lisa.  Tanner was a precious boy and her tribute to him was beautiful.  She gave him a new life with lots of love and I'm certain that he loved her dearly in return.

Tanner's pics make me think of Daisy.  My sweet girl is 10 y/o now with the white face and wise eyes that come with age.  It breaks my heart to know that one day we'll lose her, also.   :'(

;D  :D  ;D  Thanks for the huge grin that you gave me.  With 3 - 90+ lb. long-haired & double-coated dogs, I so sympathize.  There are days that I wonder what life would've been like if I'd fallen in love with some small breed like a Westy, but there's just nothin' like our BP's, even when there's fur eeeevvvverywhe re!  I bet that Bubba looks and smells wonderful now though, doesn't he?   ;D  Kisses to the big, sweet-smellin' boy!   :-*

Mixed Breed Pictures / Re: Hi everybody! need some help!

Hmmm, I'd guess GSD?/Pyr mix.  His ears look more Pyr to me, but his face is slimmer (more like a GSD or ?), and since he's so young, it's still a little hard to tell.  In any case, he's adorable!  I'd tend to agree with Chris (Zoo Crew) that you may want to keep it a little quiet about the wolf question just so that you don't end up with legal issues.  :-X  I'd also suggest that you watch him closely around cats, chickens, etc. though until you know if he has a high prey drive.  We have someone on this board that suspects that he has a Pyr/Artic Wolf hybrid and I read that his beautiful pup has a tendency to hunt around the farm, so you may want to keep a very close eye on your little guy (especially as he gets a few months older), so that everyone stays safe.   ;)

Thanks for sharing that--we need more stories like this one! :-*

We sure do!  Thank you for both the smile and the happy tear.  He sounds like a wonderful man and a very special sweet pup.  They are both so lucky to have one another.   :-*

Oh & wow, this is such a small world.  How cool is that?   8)

Wow, I would definitely skip that groomer next time!  I've had my dogs professionally groomed quite a few times in years past and I've never had them come out sore not to mention that thirsty.  Poor guy.   :(  That sounds pretty extreme to me.   :-\

He looks all beautiful Pyr boy to me.  2 of our Pyrs have come from breeders sold as show potential and 2 have been from unknown BYB breeders, farmers or petshop origins and there is a bit of difference in the overall appearance of our rescued pups vs. our breeder-born pups, though not an iota of difference in our love for them and they are all wonderful, sweet, beautiful pups.   :-*  :-*  :-*  I've just seen quite a bit of variety though in the non-confirmation Pyrs, so Bear looks all gorgeous Pyr to me (and a lot like my beloved Sammy  :-*), probably just not from a confirmation background, if that makes sense?  For my 2 cents, I'd adopt him in a nanosecond if you can work things out with Moo, especially since his current owner is known to have a history of violent outbursts & drug issues.   :-\  :(  That is really worrisome and it sounds like Bear really wants to move, which would give me pause.  It sounds like he's really asking for a new home and he's picked you, smart pup!   ;)  :)  :-*   As for those awful people that were going to shoot Bear b/c he was too friendly & sociable, grrrrrrr...  :-X  >:(   :o  >:(  I never cease to be amazed at just how low some "humans" will go.....  Poor Bear, he really makes me think of my Sammy in his pretty face, sweetness & background.  I'd love to see you rescue him, if you can.

Regarding introducing he & Moo, we've had great luck introducing our new pups in a neutral setting, vs. at home.  We'd found in the past that Daisy can be leash aggressive with other dogs, and of course we wanted to avoid that.  So when we adopted Cassie we introduced she & Daisy in the fenced yard of one of our rental properties that was vacant at the time.  Daisy & Sammy were introduced at Pyr Rescue (also in a fenced yard).  In both cases it worked out very well.  Daisy & Sam were introduced w/o leashes (he's extremely mellow and loves all other dogs) and we had lots of trained help around if it was needed, but they got along great from the start.  We intro-ed Daiz & Cass w/Cassie on a leash (Cassie was a bouncy big puppy at the time), so that Daiz (older girl) could get away and chill out if she needed to.  This might work out well with Moo & Bear too, since Moo is smaller he might feel more comfortable with Bear on leash?  Anyway, with Daisy & Cassie, after awhile we let them play off-leash (closely supervised) and it went well and they are the best of buds to this day.  If you can use a neutral setting, it might work out better for Moo.  Also, it might help if you could get Bear's "boys" (that made me laugh, ha ha!) ummm well... removed prior to the intro?   But since I have just the one male pup (and he was neutered by rescue prior to adoption), I don't know if that would help right away or not.  It might take some time for Bear's testosterone levels to drop enough for it to help Moo accept him, but other BPO-ers will know a lot more about that than I do.  Just a thought.

Outside vs. inside...it looked like Sammy had never been inside a house before.  You wouldn't believe what it took for us to get him inside our house and then it took us forever it seemed to coax him to step off of the entry mat.  Poor baby was absolutely scared to death.  :'(  Still, it was amazing how fast he became another happy house pup and he's never looked back.  We refer to him as our furry speed bump b/c he loves to lay sideways in the hallway.   :D  ;)  ;D  I just bet that Bear will make a wonderful house dog, too.   :-*

Finally, I love the idea of fostering him to see how it works out.  That way you can be sure that he'll end up with a wonderful home (and I'm really hoping that it's with you  ;)  :)).  Please keep us posted, ok?

Tricia,
I just saw this post, and let me tell you, I'm almost as excited about him as I am about my baby. He has got to be one of the cutest puppies! I just want to squish him and talk all kinds of baby talk to him!
Oh hey Tricia! You helped me a while back when I was going to take in a young kitten, not sure if you remember talking to me, but you were a huge help! I had him for a while and rehomed him to the perfect family!

Also I think the name contest is such a sweet, caring idea. It will make those kids to happy. But I agree be careful, my parents let me name my cat when I was 5, his name to this day is Grapefruit (he's 17 this year).

Sorry to threadjack but...Oh Chantel, thank you!!!  I'm ROFL here, I absolutely love "Grapefruit"!  That is too sweet, you must have been such an adorable little girl!  I'm off to tell my hubby now.  This will make him feel better next time he has to take Gray Baby or Blackberry (other kitty) to the vet.   ;D  ;)  ;D

Sorry!   :-[  Now back to more great name ideas for this sweet little Bouvie boy.   :-*  BTW, I love Chris' suggestion of Mr Bojangles.  That's cute!!
