General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / St. in kill shelter
« on: February 02, 2009, 04:08:07 pm »
Hello everyone...i would like to tell every one that there is a 6 year old, less then 100 pound St. in a kill shelter in Boston MA. He was an owner surrender, i believe they told me his owner passed.  Do to the fact he is on cement, his hips are hurting him.  He did pass the temperment test, although hopefully he won't be there too long.  He is at the MSPCA.

they have a movie about this with Jack Black in it...they call it vapoorize...it is a funny movie...
they sell this at Debbie's pet land in MA...i laugh at the  cost of it and how many people actually purchase it!  (i do not work there  (nor ever would) but witnessed two people purchasing it!)

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Re: Stinky feet....what to do?
« on: January 26, 2009, 04:48:12 pm »
I do know that dog feet do smell when there is a small yeast problem from them sweating and or being wet from snow or rain.  I know of a product called Nzymes that have helped out all of my dogs, and they are now yeast issue free with it.  It is a wonderful thing, a suppliment to your dogs food.  (sorry not trying to sell it, although it works great!) www.nzymes.com

the recipe that i have is 16 drops of genitain violet (found at CVS behind counter) 4 tablespoon boric acid (found behind cvs counter) and 16 oz alcohol. It is called the blue powder solution. YOu can google it and find more about how to use it appropriately. Highly recommended by my vet and the mastiff world too

In MA they are trying to pass a law where if your dog is barking outside and a neighbor calls and complains then the animal control can euthanize the dogs while the owners are away.  It is the anti-dog nucence law!!!

Transporting & Traveling With Dogs / Re: Any of your pups get car sick?
« on: December 22, 2008, 03:15:56 pm »
I don't know how true this is, but i found this article on this website http://www.sfgsrescue.org/articles/carsick.htm  and it seems like it would work...the article is as follows:

Car Sickness (Dog)

If your dog is miserable from a ride in the car. What can you do, short of doping the animal up??  Here are just a few suggestions -

1. One of the best herbs for nausea of any kind is ginger - be it a couple of ginger snap cookies ginger ale/beer, crystallized ginger, or a 500 mg capsule of the powder. Just give it about 30 minutes before any car trip. Good for people, too. Even for seasickness.Tr y powdered ginger root capsules. Ginger root does help calm the stomach. Ginger can be given in tea, too, if the animal prefers it. Ginger root raw is a little strong, and most animals don't like it. Scale down the human dosage for animals, and give a little before the car ride as well as during the trip if needed. You can buy Hofel's High Strength Ginger 'Pearles' (a fancy name for capsules!) for the dogs and their car sickness. Each capsule contains the same as 12grams of fresh ginger and you only need one per day, given about half an hour before traveling. They have found that it really does help in reducing salivation and nausea.

2. In Pat Colby's book - Natural Pet Care, under the heading Travel  Sickness is says  "In all species, (including humans) this is due to a vitamin B6 deficiency". Goes on to say "give half a teaspoon of ascorbate, one B complex and one B6, or half of each for a small dog (the two must always be given together). If it is to be a long journey, giving all the recommended vitamins on the feed the day before as well, and during the journey, would also be a good idea as it would guard against the extra stress"

3. Fenugreek, another herb, can be used just like ginger.

4. Rescue Remedy can be given just a few drops on a small treat. This is a Bach Flower Remedy. It tends to calm down an animal but doesn't make them dopey like drugs do. Give about 4 drops in the mouth or ears about 10-12 hours before starting the trip, repeating every four hours or as needed. You can also spritz the car with a dilution made with spring water. RR is absorbed anywhere through the skin, so even rubbing some RR in can help calm. RR can also be given in drinking water - dilution does not affect its efficacy.

5. Peppermint is wonderful for motion sickness. A drop or two of tincture of peppermint might help or try brewing some peppermint tea and giving the animal some cooled tea. This also calms the stomach.

6. Try giving a little raw honey before the car trip. It tends to calm the tummy. Repeat as necessary. (If your animal has a heart problem, however, do not give honey, as it tends to make animals retain fluid, which is not good in the case of heart patients)

7. Behavior. Start the dog (or cat) out by sitting in the car. After several times and the attitude is calm, try starting the car with the dog in it. Wait until the animal is comfortable with a running parked car before driving a short (and I mean SHORT, like down the driveway) distance. *Slowly* keep increasing the time spent in the moving car until the animal is more comfortable with being in a moving car. Spread the "training" out over several weeks for best results. Dosing with any of the 4 remedies above can help too. When in the car, keep your voice cheerful rather than soothing. This will help the animal see that there is nothing scary about being in the car.

8. Try the training on both a full and an empty stomach. Some animals need to eat before riding, some need an empty stomach.

9. When driving to a destination for the first time, make sure it is a fun place. Nothing will undo all your hardwork more quickly than the first visit being a vet clinic or some other "unfun" place. Go to the park or the beach or some other place your dog can look forward to.

10. Some doctors say that carsickness is from a lack of Vit B6, so try giving your dog extra B vits on the morning of the journey. Raw liver (fed the night before or that morning) has lots of B vits, and a human supplement can also be given in pill form. Please give a B complex vitamin rather than just one B vitamin, as they need to be balanced out for maximum effect.

11. Ask your homeopathic vet about perhaps trying one of the following homeopathic remedies (in about the 6th potency): Petroleum, Cocculus, Tabacum, Borax.

Always remember to secure your animal properly in the car. Loose in the back of a truck may look "cool", but your animal can be injured and perhaps killed this way. Crates tied or bolted down in the back of a truck or the back of a car is the safest route. Seatbelts for animals are also available. A simple downstay in the backseat may not be sufficient in preventing injury should an accident occur.

Good luck!:)

I just read an article, i will have to find it that states if you give too much omega 6's you put all of the omega's out of preportion and because of that you will notice behavioral changes.  I called the vet and they actually agreed with this for some odd reason.  SO i guess becareful on the omega's

I know in mastiffs,if they can only open the mouth 1'2 inches it is because of a cleft pallett.  They were actually just talking about this on another forum.

First of all, yes they have had health problems and they have had behavioral issues.  second of all, yes i had surgury, i had it last month...and what??? thirdly, i do believe that not ever marriage is perfect, if i felt that there was an issue, yes i would discuss  it with the hubs, and yes i may fume as well.  have i had doubts? Yes i have, i think that i am entitled to ask a question.  And yes the mentors, yes i know what they say, but i can also ask what others say too.  I can ask an opinion and you may give it since it was asked for.  I do believe my question was about if you could tell from a three week old puppy what it looks like. That is what i asked, and was told to ask from one of my mentors.  Getting other peoples opinions is an important thing, it doesn't matter what the breed is, i simply asked if it was possible to tell.  As for my marriage...yes hard times come and go for us, perhaps all of you have perfect marriages and that is GREAT!!! and i am happy for you.  Unfortunatley in my marriage we have had more rough times then not.  I didn't ask if i should get this puppy, i said i am getting her.  I also never once said i will breed her to titan, not once in this post.  I know that the pup may or may not compliment titan, and the opposite, therefore i would not even think of going that route...have i in the past when i didn't research?? prob. but now after studing pedigrees and so on and finding more information about titan's lines and futher searching.  Yes i did ask your opinion upon a 3 week puppy,, not whether my marriage is appropriate to you.

oh i completely understand you, we are going to finish titan, it prob will be about 6 months-a year to finish titan.  Finishing him is not the problem at all, the pup will not even be able to come home with me until she is 12 weeks old anyway, but the breeder has a list of people already and asked me to come this weekend, which would make the pups now about 3-4 weeks old.  Yes we are getting a foundation b**** but the post before said you should not pick a puppy to match titan, but an adult to match him when that time comes.  I  have never said i would breed titan to her, i did ask though, or was told that line breeding is the way to go to establish a line of your own after several breedings.....

i do understand what you are saying, don't get me wrong there...but... these pups have been evaluated by three different breeders as well as two handlers.  There are a total of 5 show pups in the litter according to both the breeders and handlers.  There is a choice within those 5 that i get to choose.  I was just asking if it was possible.  I do have four mentor breeders that i am working  with.  two are from different breeds...golde ns and elkhounds, the other two are mastiff people.  The handlers are those who handle mastiffs, berners, rotties, and pointers too.
i do know that you can tell the structure, just not the movement.  I do have others i am talking with, i am not purchasing her to breed to titan, that is not the plan.  If that happens and they compliment each other that is something different.  I am getting her to show and do obedience with, that is the main point.  Yes titan is intact, but i am not purchasing her for that.  And i would like a female now, and we will be getting a female now because that makes sense right now for us in the stage of this we are in. Titan once old enough, and clears all of his health tests, he will be bred to this puppies mother.  The breeder likes his movement, structure, head, angles, and is impressed with his height as well.  I am not doing this blind, i was just asking if it was possible to know.

no no allergies that the vet could find or go over.  He did have lyme disease though, which i went to our old vet for as early as 3 months old, and they claimed he was fine.  Trusting the vet he was fine, when he honestly was not fine. once the booty blowout continued on i switched vets and came to the conclusion of lyme.

we are still showing titan, in fact we have a show next weekend in fitchburg.  The reason we stopped showing was because titan turn 12 months, and the dogs we were going against were 17 months, i needed him to mature a little more, which he has.  We are showing titan to his Championship, as we have 4 points now.

We first stopped showing because of Lyme disease and he lost weight, then once we figured out what was wrong we did the meds,, and waited until he was back up to weight.  The other thing was we couldn't figure out his stomach, he had diarreah for ever, and finally we figured out why and fixed that.  We are ready to go again and we will be there saturday + sunday
