Well, right now I don't have any close neighbors. My closest has sled dogs that bark like crazy when it is feeding time! Actually my Heeler/Collie mix is the barker. She barks at everything. So, I guess Ginger will learn from her  :D

I haven't been around in awhile...life has been busy!

I thot I would pop in and get you all caught up. Ginger is growing! She went thru a funky face phase about a month ago. It just didn't look right. Her body got long and her legs were short and fat. Hubby said she looked like she was going to be a mimi GP! But she grows in spurts. She likes to stay outside. I was worried about her being out by herself at night, but she seems to prefer it to the warm house! When I come home from work she jumps around like a bunny and talks her head off! No barking yet, just noises like growls and such. I get such a kick out of her!

On to some pics!
Remember when I got her?

Sleeping in the coolest part of the house. 3mos old

Where's the puppy?

There she is! (4mos old)she has a chewy bone in her mouth!

So, there she is! I do have a few questions. When do they start barking? I have only heard her bark once. Ususally it just growls and doggie talking. Also, seeing as how she is the only GP around, will she have guarding instincts naturally or does she have to learn them from another older GP?

Thanks for looking!

I think keepind a journal is a good idea. it will also give you an idea of when your dog barks and if it seems excessive to you.

I am a first time Pry owner and so don't know alot about them. have you talked to your neighbor and explained the breed and what they do? maybe they need a bit of an education?

Great Pyrenees Discussions / Re: How much does your Pyr weigh?

I have no idea how much LB weighs. I have to find someone with a scale as the vet is 45 mins away! She is 2 mos now and I would really like to keep a journal of her height and weight.

$270 for a spay  :o What is the earliest that you can get them spayed? In CA we would spay pups at 10 weeks when they were adopted out of the selter. I normally wait until 6 mos, but if LB is gonna be a heavy weight it's gonna cost an arm and a leg!

I'm glad you all like my Little Bit! and thank you for the welcome!

I have decided to go ahead and put her on the adult food my other dogs are eating. I had an Aussie who did poorly on a wheat base dog food, he got trrible hot spots. Will a corn base dog food be as bad for LB? I know the hot weather will affect her also? I did put the Aussie on Nutro and the hot spots cleared up. Guess I will have to take a trip the the feed store in the next town and see what they have.

Ok, you asked, more pics! This was yesterday. it was such a nice sunny day and she was having fun in the snow.

Hi everyone! I am new here and I am just cruising around to get myself aquianted with this board. so many nice people here!

My name is Kymi and I got a GP for Christmas. This is my first BIG dog. A neighbor brought her over on Christmas mornig as a surprise for me. She has a wonderful male and two females she bred. This pup is out of her male and her mom's female. She look slike her daddy. She is the runt, which I love, and is such a neat pup! She cracks me up every day!

I live on 10 acres, have horses and mentioned to this neighbor that I was thinking about getting a GP to guard them. Last year we had a bear go through our pasture and our gelding chased it off. we also have mountain lions, bobcats and coyotes here so I wanted a guard dog for the horses. She has met the horses, altho our gelding chased her out of the pastureyesterd ay. I think it is because I also have a heeler/collie mix pup who has chased the horses too much. This is going to be interesting... having a guardian and a herder at the same time!

FAQs about puppies / Question About Hips
« on: January 05, 2008, 03:26:15 pm »
I have a new GP pup, 8weeks old. I have never owned such a large breed before. I have been told that this breed is predisposed to bad hips. How do I know, other than x-rays, if this pup is going to have bad hips? is there a way to tell? I know both parents so can go look at them if I have to.

Many moons ago I was told by a doggie person to do this with pups and it can give you an idea if thir hips are going to go bad. First you put the puppy on it's back. Then gently push down on thier hind legs. If they open up easily and you can push them open to the floor, good hips. If not, bad hips. I cannot push my pups hips wide open so this tells me she will have bad hips. OR, can you not do this trick with a GP?

Is there anything i should be doing now to strenghthen her hips? Like control her growth or something?

bigdogs@5501: That is a house full of BIG dogs! Bless you for rescueing those dogs!

Another question! Long ago a doggie person told me about how to check a dogs hips...you do this on puppies more than older dogs. She said to lay them on thier back and gently press down on thier hind legs. if they can open them to the floor, hips are good. If there is a resistance and you can't take the knee part all the way to the floor, thier hips will go bad. Anyone agree with this? Little Bits legs will not go to the floor so I am assuming her hips will go bad eventually.

You all are too kind! I had to laugh this morning when I went out to feed the horses. She came along of course. She was on one path and I was on another going back to the house. She wanted to get to me so started across the snow bank. It was as tall as she was and she was jumping like a rabbit through the snow. I wish I had the camera with me as she was soooo cute!

I took some more pics tonite. The date on my camera is off. Oh, and don't mind the floor. We moved here last year and the floor is the last thing to work on.

I wish this had come out better but she was trying to get to me and it was taken at too close a range

Hi There!

Thanks guys! I just love her...which makes my other pup just a bit jealous!

She came out in the pasture when I fed last night and our gelding chased her out. She ran to the house all scared. Poor baby. The horses are used to the other pup(a heeler) chasing them and I guess the gelding figured LB would do the same. I brought her back up to the horses and let her hang with my filly so she wouldn't be afraid of the horses. I told the gelding that he better watch it as that pup may just save his life one day  ;)

Since I am new and only have an 8 week old pup, I am not the one to give you the statistics. How does she look to you? Did the vet say anything like "she's fat"? If she feels in good weight to you I would say she is fine.

I did't think about a harness. I do have one I think will fit her. She learned "out" real quick when I wanted her out of the pature, so she's not dumb. I think because she has two healing breeds in her she just can't help herself! Got go after something! Once she took over the horse ball, she ot better about the horses, but now drives me nuts as I can't go outside without kicking the ball all the time for her to chase it. I do spend time everyday when I feed throwing the ball for her so she gets some of my time.

Hi, I am new here and joined because I have a new GP pup. But i also have a Heeler/Border collie mix and need some advice.

I owned a Heeler when I was a teenager, she was my first "my" dog and she was a great dog. I took her to obedience classes and she was top of her class! Never really did anything wrong. But sh was raised in house in surburbia.

I was given a Heelr/Collie cross last year. Sheis now 1 year old. She is so very different from the Heeler I had as a ki. Now I am much older, much busier and a bitlazy! I live on 10 acres in the middle of noweher. I admit that I didn't do the basic obidience training with her. Being a herding dog on both sides her instinct is way out there. She will chase anything. Her favorite toy is an old horse bal that she will chase all day long.

My problem is she chases the horses. She is not as bad as she was a few monts ago but the horses hate her and given the oppertunity she will chase them. She knows I do not like this behavior.

Altho it is late in the game and I was really bad not doing this earlier, I need some input. She hates leashes and this will have to be our first lesson.after that, what do you all suggest I do when teaching her about the horses? What steps would you take?
