I was wondering if anyone has had personal experience with insulinoma. One of my adopters sent an email today today that the dobe that I finally placed has been diagnosed with this. I really didnt have any information myself on the disease so I had to read up on it. Prognosis is poor and I really feel bad for this man.

I responded to this person because the ad was so stupid. I havent heard in a long time the ol "I cant neuter/spay because it takes away all the dogs natural urges or its so unnatural. If I could I would neuter a few men I know. Then when they say something that stupid I can reply "but your neutered" Sorry, its people like this that give a bad name to just about any one else.

Food Discussion & Information / Re: Anyone feed Raw?
« on: May 14, 2008, 08:33:02 am »
I fed raw for some time and will feed it to rescue dogs if they are doing really bad when they come in. My one suggestion is to make sure that you have a well rounded supplimentatio n for the diet. The hardest time I had supplimenting was calcium because a dogs requirement is not that of a humans and most companies really dont make a high quality supply except Solid Gold. I dont think that just eating bones is a good way to get calcium.
No more bad teeth, nice coats, no fussy eating. Lots of advantages not too many drawbacks.

Fiona and Jordy (neos) open their mouths and wait for you to drop the treat in. When it hits the tongue, they close their mouths. It cracks me up. They remind me of the Orca's at Seaworld. Either they open and I drop or they stick out their tongues out and I put the treat on their tongue. I just love giving them treats.
There is no such thing as a hug with any other size than a big dog.
I look at my dogs who try their best to be as small as they can, to play as soft as they can, and be as dainty as they can and when Im rolling around with them, I know that they have the capability to be fierce and protective should they need to be BUT choose not to.

I wasnt going to comment on the food other than to say that if the dog wont eat it, take it back because they can smell what we cant but I just had to share my personal experience with the protein debate. I dont feed puppy for btw. Personally I think its a waste of money) I raised a litter of German Shepherd pups on all raw diet. Super high protein very little grains and veggies. The pups grew at half the rate of the previous litter that were fed bagged food. I was beginning to think that I had bred a litter of dwarfs. I kept some of the puppies until they were 6 months old (1 I kept until 2) The puppies still did not really start to grow and fill out until I changed the food over to bagged so I could  place them easier. I personally think that its all the hormones in the bagged food that makes puppies grow too fast not the protein. I remember reading one article on feeding pups adult food and although I still dont feed puppy food I do remember what it said. And that was..... when we feed adult food to pupppies and we feed more than suggested, puppies are getting probably the same amount of protein as they would on a higher fatty puppy food. I thought about this and thought is was pretty true.
I have been researching canine nutrition since 98 and after raising that litter on raw, I personally think the protein debate isnt quite as we were originally told. I would like to know if there are other BPO's that feed raw and have gotten the same results on litters that I did.

Im so sorry for you and for the breeder. Raising puppies takes so much from us that when they get sick, its devestating. I was reading an article from a pap breeder who had parvo and she recommended Tamiflu. She said that it worked great. When I first read the post my concern was the virus sluffing off after the puppies were better. If I remember right the virus remains in the intestinal tract for a period of time. That would be a concern and I would check that out. If that isnt so ...then I say go for it. I have known dogs that have gotten it and lived long happy lives.

Wow thanks for all the info. Im definately going to have to check it out.

Thanks for responding. The thing that I worry about the most is the humidity. How bad is the humidity? Other than that does the community support alot of dog activities ie shows, rescues etc. When I left Wa state I went through withdrawls over the lack of dog shows and "dog related" get togethers. Is it easy to find housing for big breeds. I have been looking at housing prices but I might like to rent if the landlord would allow my rescue to continue until I knew just where I wanted to go. I am planning a trip there sometime this year to check things out. Thanks

I may be moving to Jacksonville Fl and was wondering if anyone lives close by there? Currently I live in Las Vegas so it will be alot different. I was on Petfindr tonight and couldnt believe that there were only 31 rescues posted. Since my rescue will go with me would like to know what Im in for.

Good Morning/Afternoon,

I really need to place my female Neo that Ive had in rescue for almost a year. I really like her but rescue life just isnt for her and her behavior is starting to show it. IF anyone knows of possible home, can you let me know? The adopter would need to fill out an app and sign a contract. I would look for a rescue in that area and see if they would be able to do a home check. Pics of her on request. She is actually the dog that is my profile pic. Great dog just needs a home of her own. Thanks

Helpful Groups & Dogs in Need / Re: Question about rescues
« on: April 28, 2008, 05:15:07 pm »
Here in NV the overpet population is so bad that we have rescues place ads in the paper. I dont find anything wrong with it. People still have in their heads that rescue dogs are not as good somehow as dogs offered from a private home. As a rescue owner, I have thought about doing it myself for dogs that I just cant place (I have one dog that I have had for almost a year) but its expensive and if I dont get a response I just wasted food money for it.
Advertising is advertising. Its hard to think that a rescue is a business but it is. If the rescue doesnt think like a business then it wont be around for long.
As long as the group is doing good things and placing the dogs with contracts and home checks, I say go for it!

Doberman Discussions / My dobe rescue found a new home in OR
« on: April 27, 2008, 07:25:43 pm »
Im so excited for my dobe Lucky. He just couldnt get adopted here in NV because of his age. FINALLY two people came foward and I actually got to choose where he went. This morning I dropped him off at the airport to start a brand new life with his owner. As I was driving home with tears, I told myself that this is what rescue is all about. From death row to this...its the best. I would have put in a pic but I dont know how. I just had to share! Thanks

Id like to send you some money to help cover the cost to put the two dogs to sleep. Im not working right now but the kindness you will show these dogs is something there is no price for. If you give me your address or if you have a Paypal acct, I can send or pay this weekend.
As sad as this is, we should all be so grateful that there are people around us who are kind, caring and can make a difference. Ive become so hardened by doing rescue and the things that people make excuses for. Maybe we could set up a fund to cover expenses like this so no one would be out the money. I always say, if you cant give a home, share your money.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Two Neos need home in FL
« on: April 17, 2008, 05:59:58 pm »
Scanning for Neos and there are two in FL, a mom and son, whose owner was sent to Iraq and wont be coming home. The dogs ended up at the shelter but pulled by the Humane Society. If anyone can find a place for them, that would be so great. Older Neos fade so fast at the shelter. I saw them and just about cried.

After reading this I thought of the email I received this evening for one of my rescue dogs. It started out like this. Hi, Im *** Im looking to volunteer my time because Im required to perform 40 hours of community service...Now doesnt that make me feel safe to adopt a dog to him.
