Old English Mastiff Discussions / Leash training
« on: March 04, 2009, 03:56:31 am »
Okay so Cooper hasn't quite figured out the leash. We just started walking him on it and unless Chance is leading Cooper doesn't do so well. A friend recommended the Halti which totally threw Cooper for a loop. He hated having it over his nose and would try walking while pawing at the Halti. Whenever he would pull and it pulls down on the face he would face dive at the ground and wrestle with his Halti. So I decided to stop the torture and say the Halti is a no go. My husband has always leash trained with chokers but I'm not a fan. Chance trained just fine on it and is great on a leash but I can't do it bc Cooper will just pull and choke himself. Any tips or advice? What have you used? Has any one been successful with the dog harness? I found a harness that looks good but don't want to use it if that is the wrong thing for OEM.

you are a stronger woman then I am..I would have told her where she could put her nosy and overly opinionated thoughts! That's crazy to tell someone that. I agree with you..he is healthy and loving what more could you want? As long as you don't plan on showing him who cares! A few people have noted that cooper has more black then he probably should (on his back and face) but I honestly don't care..he is healthy and full of energy and loves our family.
Good news on the vet..it is always nice to find a vet that you click with.

Old English Mastiff Discussions / Re: Feeding my OEM

I'm glad you asked this question. I was just getting ready to but saw your post. I'll need to print it out for my husband. He isn't used to giant breeds only large breeds and insists our dog will be fine on the same food because it is cheaper and the economy and yadayada...I keep telling him we will pay thousands more in the end if we don't switch because there is no way I WON'T treat our dog when needed..so he needs to choose between a healthy dog with pricey food or cheap food and one the guilt of not doing our dog the service he deserves and two the medical bills because not dealing with it isn't an option in my book :) Thanks everyone for all the great information.

I like this topic :)

I love that I ALWAYS feel safe with Chance around. He is very good about letting me know when people I can't see/hear are around..and love that Cooper has already picked up on that protective trait and wants to let me know when people are at the door.
I love that when I'm on the bed Chances head rests on the mattress so I can pet him.
Mostly I love how sensitive Chance is - he knows when I'm sad or mad and when I cry he practically sits on me and licks away the tears till I stop.
I love that Cooper HAS to sit on or up against me or he isn't happy. (That will be interesting when he isn't a 20lb puppy and he is 150+ :) )

Old English Mastiff Pictures / Pictures of my new mastiff
« on: February 17, 2009, 08:47:29 am »
So I was told pictures are a must   :)
Here are some pictures from Cooper's first day at home with us (just 8 weeks old). As you can tell our big boy (yellow lab), Chance wasn't quite sure what to think about all of it. As time has progressed it has become impossible to snap a photo of them because they are always playing. I will post some new photos soon.

Also wanted to thank everyone for the warm welcome. I'm excited to have a support group that knows about the breed.

Introduce Yourself to the Forum / New Mastiff Mommy & New to the site
« on: February 16, 2009, 08:52:21 am »
Hi there. Still trying to figure out the site. How to post and all that fun stuff. So I figured I would introduce myself this way and if anyone has tips let me know :)
So I'm new to the site because my husband and I just bought an adorable english mastiff puppy, Cooper, on Jan 28th. He is ten weeks old and has possibly already stolen my heart. We already have a six year old yellow lab, Chance. We knew more about labs and so it was easier to train him. I don't know anyone who has a mastiff and am worried I won't make the right decisions for our new baby. So I plan on diving in head first with all the information you all already have on here. Anything else would be greatly appreciated. He is already training wonderfully which I contribute to my husband and Cooper's new best friend Chance (who is doing a great job of helping train Cooper). Thanks in advance for any advice or tips you can throw my way!
