I would recommend rubber toys like this kong balls... - A friend of ours gave us their rubber teat cup ("teat" use for milking cows) and it is cheaper to get from also it last longer! - It was funny to watch my bernese chewing and bounce the toy around!

Just an advice, please don't leave odd stuff (sock, shose, camera ETC) anywhere because puppy will find and chew it! -

Be great if you have a toy box full of toys and encourage the pup to get their toy out of the box so in the future, the pup will knows where the toys are. - My Bernese "Autumn" always pick out a toy and carry it in her mouth, favourite toy are squeak soft toy duck!! - She LOVE it!

 :)
Picking a name is fun however it can be also hard to pick just one that suit your puppy! Blaze sound's gorgeous name.
How about - Monty - Singen - Wilson - Oscar - Murren - Hugo - Ringo - Hansi - Turi - Maxi - Moik - Dudley - That's all I could think - Good luck for having a new puppy! Keep us posted and show us the photo!

I haven't really been carefully reading the informations about growling Berners,
but I wanted to point out that there are many different types of growling.
Autumn - my pup dosen't growl much but I could see somthing different about my friend's 2 bernese mountain dogs growling...

Yes there is aggressive and fearful growling - situations in which one should
exercise caution with their dog, and follow with lots of training and
behavior modification.

I think it's really important to mention that dogs also growl in play.  It
can sometimes be difficult to distinguish, especially if it is a growing dog
or a new behavior.

My friend's 2 Bernese mountains growl all the time to each other and to me to coax each other on or to be silly.  It's so important to read  your dog's body language as well as listening.  Is his tail wagging, is he relaxed?

Friend's berner 'Jackson' went through a stage of excessive growling and mouthiness, jumping,
bumping, etc when he was about 6 months old.  I thought at first that  he was trying to be "top dog" and getting a little aggressive.  I know now that he was entering adolescence and his behaviors were changing.  So it was new
activity, but not bad - he was just playing differently.

Just something to think about when dealing with new growling.  You  don't
want to punish a dog for being silly and funny- just because you don't get  the
joke!
Is this correct?

:) Hello, My name is Sarah, I am young adult age 22yrs lives in New Zealand (North Island), It is a beautiful country, lots of greens lands but the weathers started to get awful rain and colder now as we have autumn season (Winter coming soon) - I live with my parents and 2 teenagers brothers and we have 5 dogs and 10 cats, a baby tame budgie and very noisy lovebird!!!. ;)

 - Our dogs that we have is 1yrs old smooth coat Chihuahua name Maxi, he is a pet as he was born with cute tip bent tail from when he was born that his mother had 5 puppies which is bigger litter also Maxi is quiet big healthy Chihuahua!  :D

- Tess and Tosh, both are Maltese terriers and they are 11yrs and 12yrs (half sisters), we just adopted them from their previous owner last year. ;)

Hunter is a staffy cross Lab that we rescues him from a lady who doesn’t really wanted him at all so we decide to adopt him and raise him to be a good dog however he became a real great mate to my youngest brother (15yrs). 8)

Next... Me… I own a beautiful Bernese mountain puppy name Autumn and she is my first bernese - I really love large breed and decide to get one that I could do the showing and carting as a hobbies – Something to do for a hobbies and friendship
- I had a hardest time to pick out which breed that I would buy first then another next stage so I picked Bernese mountain as Autumn is the bigger of the litter, outgoing and great temperament - she is the one! – I am study as Computers and design in university. :)

Then later on in the next stage.... I am thinking about getting a New Foundland or St Bernard but the problem is that my family's plan is to move back to America in 2 years (2006) to be more closer to my mother’s families in America - We will take our dogs and cats but not sure how expensive it would cost to take another largest breed of dog to take with us to USA. :)

Welcome to Big paws only website - Your dog "Rosie" is quiet big and very beautiful!!! - Do she have a long tail or short????

I think she is part of Rhodesian Ridgeback because of her colour as she have red wheaten colour but she dosen't have the line marking on her back - Rosie is not part of Staffy breed because she have a nice muzzle, long, deep and powerful shape but she dosen't have the line marking on her back - She may be cross with Lab and part of a Weimaraner or bit of great dane - Hard to tell what breed she is but it could say that she is cross with 3 different breeds....

;) Bernese would be very lovely if you would love to get one -
maybe you would liked to know about bernese temperament etc...

Temperament:
The Bernese Mountain Dog is very social and extremely loyal to its family. It usually attaches itself to one member in particular. Bernese will love to do the obedience and agility -
Gentle, quiet and very devoted. Loyal and affectionate. Very trainable and willing. Sensitive--should be trained gently. A good watchdog, but not overly aggressive. Self-confident, alert and good-natured. Never sharp or shy. Good with children. These dogs may be slow to mature, remaining boisterous and puppy-like for quite awhile. The Bernese needs to be with people and not relegated to the backyard or kennel run. A friend for life. Like any dog, the Bernese Mountain Dog should be well socialized as a puppy. The Bernese Mountain Dog is eager to please and easy to train. He is intelligent and loving and makes an excellent family dog. These dogs may be slow to mature and remain puppy like for a while.

Up Keep:
This dog enjoys the outdoors, especially in cold weather. It needs daily but moderate exercise, either a good hike or a walk on leash. It enjoys pulling. Although it can physically live outdoors in temperate to cold climates, it is so in tune with its human family that it cannot be relegated to life alone in the yard. Inside, it needs plenty of room to stretch out. Its coat needs brushing one or two times weekly, much more often when shedding. The Bernese life span is described by a Swiss expression: "Three years a young dog, three years a good dog and three years an old dog. All else is a gift from God."
