Food Discussion & Information / pumpkin for loose stools?
« on: September 29, 2009, 12:16:23 pm »
When we first got Murphy, he had loose stool.  It turned out to be worms, so the vet dewormed him and gave him some medicine.  His stools were fine for a while but soon became loose again.  I have decided to try pumpkin, but I have some questions.
How much should I give him?
Should I mix it with his dry food?
How often should I feed it to hime?

Thanks guys!  :)

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / 2nd trip to the dog park
« on: September 25, 2009, 10:59:57 am »
So the first visit was to one of the outdoor dog parks in our area.  Wicket and Murphy seemed to like it ok, but they were pretty shy and didn't play very much.  Not one to be discouraged, I decided to take them to this big fancy new indoor dog park (www.unleashedd ogparks.com).  I am so glad I did because they had a blast! They were not shy at all this time and they made lots of new friends including the only other big paw there, a beautiful great dane!  I'm not sure what it is about this park, but they loved it.  This place will be a great place to take them during the Texas winter when it gets pretty yucky outside. ;D

No, you shouldn't have to print out pictures for a groomer!  Have you tried to find a grommer in your area that specializes in large breeds/double coated breeds?  I don't know how rare that is but it is worth a shot.  Also you could ask some fellow dog owners for recommendation s.

There is no excuse for a dog to be sent home dripping wet! I used to work for a dog boarding/daycare/grooming facility, and our groomers were great! They would hand dry untill the dog was 90% dry and then cage dry.  I never saw a dog go home damp, let alone dripping.

Maybe the vet you took Rota to (the one who specializes in large breeds) has a recommendation for a groomer.

I totally agree with you SC Trojans!  I also groom my boys myself.  It usually takes me about 2 hours as well to bathe and dry both dogs.  Although Murphy, the husky/pyr mix has shorter hair than Wicket, the full pyr. I also agree that investing in a dog dryer would be best.  :D

OMG!  That totally looks like another dog! I wonder if it will be the same with Wicket?  Pyrs have the double coat too... ;)

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Re: First trip to the dog park
« on: September 09, 2009, 12:04:53 pm »
Yeah, I figured it was just because it was their first time.  I would like to take them once a week, especially if we find a dog park we and the pups really love.  I plan on taking them to another one this weekend.  That stinks that Cosby had such a bad experience :(. But at least Rota is having fun! I will let everyone know how our next adventure goes!

Wicket and Murphy took their first trip to the dog park yesterday  ;D!  We have several in our area and decided to try the one closest to our house.  It is about 2 acres with and area for dogs over 30lbs and one for dogs under 30lbs.  Although, everybody was in the over 30lbs section regardless of dog size.  But everyone got along fine so I guess its no big deal.  I was surprised to find that my boys were pretty shy around the other pups.  Murphy did play more than Wicket, but they really just walked around and observed everthing.  Maybe its just because it was their first time  :). We do plan to take them on a regular basis now that they are both old enough.  There is another dog park in our area with a lake that they can go swimming in (they love to swim), and there is also a new indoor dog park that just opened. If anyone lives in the dallas area you should check out their website: www.unleashedd ogparks.com
Did anyone else's pups have the same experience?  Or do you think my guys are just shy?  ;)

This morning at around 7am I woke to the sound of my mother screaming at my dogs to stop. So I walk into the living room to find out whats going on.
First let me say that we have a dog door leading out to our backyard, so that the dog can go in and out when they need to.  Second, we have a small koi fish pond in the backyard.
So I see my mom standing at the back door, and she says to me, "They got in the pond.  They dug a mud hole next to it and they are covered in mud.  Look at your couch."  So I turn and look at my now mud covered couch.  Meanwhile the dogs are running around the backyard like crazy people.
This is the first time that they have done anything like this.  They have never even messed with the pond before. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get them to stay awat from the pond/stop digging?

These stories are heartbreaking! I can not believe you PyrLove!  It is not your place to judge other people who obviously loved their pets very much! >:( Please take your ignorant BS elsewhere, because we don't want or need to hear it.  This board is about helping people and sharing the lives of ourselves and our pups.  I hope that you never make a mistake...

I just want to say to Samsmom and Truckerdave that I am so sorry for your losses. Please don't leave on account of some ignorant wannabe thinks they know-it-all person.  I am new to this board and to being a dog owner and this board has been great! I am sending much love and support to both of you!
