Specific Website Information / Search Feature
« on: February 24, 2006, 06:57:34 pm »
Hey Micheal, I have a request. Do you think you could add a search box back to the column on the right side of the page?

In the old format, you could search through posts from an page. But now, there is a subscription box where the search used to be, and you can only search from the main page. Sometimes when I am trying to give someone a helpful response with information I have already posted, I want to check what I or other people have already written about certain subjects. It is kind of annoying to have to go back to the main page to be able to search, not to mention the fact that I keep acidentally starting to subscribe random phrases  :o

Ultimately I would love love love it if we had a search where you could use a keyword and also narrow by poster, date, and/or board. But for now I would be happy just to have the regular search back on every page :)

Saint Bernard General Discussions / Zoey had to go to the vet today
« on: February 20, 2006, 10:00:30 pm »
I woke up this morning to find Zoey with an eye full of yellow goop. Apparently she got some dirt or something in it yesterday and spent the night scratching at it and got it infected  :(

I was nervous to take her to the vet because we had a really traumatic experience last time we went there (it was the most terrifying experience zoey has ever had, and even I was traumatized). I made sure that we saw a different doctor and before I brought her in I explained to him how important it was that he was compassionate and reassuring to her and how he had to examine her on the floor where she would be more comfortable. It was so sad because Zoey kept trying to go to the front door while we were in the waiting room, and then she totally flipped out when they made me take her in the same room as last time. She was so stressed out her eyes& gums went bloodshot and her heart was pounding within a second of getting into the room. Poor baby was so upset she wouldn’t even eat the treats I used to lure her (and I brought her favorites from home). The doctor we saw today was awesome! He was comforting to her and considerate of her fears. By the time we were finished with the exam she ad relaxed enough to lay down and get some treats and belly rubs. He also gave me a lot of great info about a whole bunch of things.  I felt so relieved to finally find a good doctor in our new town – until I found out he was just a substitute and doesn’t really work there. Man! Figures it would work out like that.

He gave me some antibiotics that I have to put in her eye 2 times a day for the next few days. I have a question though: I was expecting them to be liquid but it is an ointment. I just did the first dose and I don’t want to actually touch her eyelid, so how do I make sure the ointment gets into her eye and doesn’t just go on the fur around it? Anyone else have to do this before?

He also gave me a sedative that we are going to have to give zoey before we can get her nails cut because she has such extreme anxiety about the vet and especially about having her nails cut. And he gave me a prescription for valium that I had to fill at CVS for her (which seemed SO weird to me, filling a prescription for a dog at a human pharmacy). I made an appt to have the vet cut her nails on Friday and I have to give her a tranquilizer and a valium a few hours before. I hope they work so that she doesn’t freak out and can have a positive experience because they really need to be cut but that was the most traumatizing part before.

This is a fun little game for Valentines day. It's based on the highly addictive game gold miner, but it has a cute Valentines Day theme.  :)

Games & Jokes / The hippo and the Tortoise: Best Friends Forever
« on: February 05, 2006, 12:06:46 pm »
This has probably been going around the internet for a year, so I am sure some of you have seen it, but I got it in my email today and I thought it was so beautiful that I wanted to share it with you guys :)

The story in a nutshell is that during the tsunami an old giant tortoise washed into a cove with a baby hippo that had been seperated from its mother. The baby was looking for a surrogate so he 'adopted' the tortoise as its mother. The two have been a family ever since.

I think the pictures are so beautiful, especially the last one of them cuddling. :)

I found a cute site today where you make picaso-style portraits. They reminded me of the southpark portraits everyone enjoyed making, so I thought I'd share with BPO. http://www.mrpicassohead.com/

I attempted to make a portrait of Zoey. You can see it here: http://www.mrpicassohead.com/canvas.html?id=479c5f4

After reading Liz's post about Hot Dog home deoderizer, I was super tempted to buy some, but I was leery of spending $25 (after shipping, since you cant buy it in stores here) on a bottle without knowing for sure its worth it. But I am deffinately in the market for some odor remover and I want to know what everyone thinks is the very best one out there.

Treatment & Preventative Meds / Gold Bead Implants
« on: January 10, 2006, 12:24:30 am »
I am especially worried about Zoey's hips right now and I am exploring our options to help her more. One of the things I am considering is gold bead implants. Has anyone ever had experience with gold beads? I know what articles say about them, but I would prefer to hear honest feedback from a real person.

This is a posting from my work bulletin board. I am sure this has happened to some of your cats or dogs, so I am posting it here because I know my good friends at BPO can give her great advice!

My 9 year old cat has developed a tumor on his shoulder blade - the vet says that it was probably caused by the rabies vaccine.  I've also been told that it is probably benign, but they can't be certain.  The vet gave me the option of having it removed or just watching it (making sure it doesn't get bigger).  Has anyone had any experience with this?  I don't know what to do and would like to hear from anyone who has had this same problem.

Anything Non-Dog Related / What coats/fabrics repel dog hair?
« on: December 12, 2005, 09:23:31 pm »
I need to buy a new coat, and because my current wool one is COVERED in so much hair all the time. I want to buy one that won't attrack dog hair like that. Here's the problem: the only fabrics that I can think of that repel dog hair are leather and nylon. None of the leather coats I can find have lining, so they aren't going to cut it in the New England weather. The nylon ones I have found so far are either too thin, or they have down filling but are ugly. I have checked a bunch of stores and am coming up empty handed.

Is there a fabric I haven't thought of? Or, does anyone know where I can find a warm dog-hair repeling coat.

Holiday Things / Santa and dog pics
« on: November 26, 2005, 11:47:52 pm »
The thread with Feste and Chance's Christmas Pic reminded me that I wanted to post Zoey's pic with Santa from last year now that we are getting into the holiday season.

Who else has santa pics? I'd love to see them :)

I was just watching Ultimate Zoo and saw a commercial for an Animal Planet Heroes special about Katrina pet reunions. It isn't airing until the 26th, but I wanted to let everyone at BPO know about it because I know how involved some of you were and think that a lot of you would like watching it. I know I plan to tune in.
