Name? Oh duh!  This name is 'Theodore' but we will call him Teddy.  Took me a week to name him! He has a sister who hasn't been adopted yet....boy, if I didn't already have a house full, I'd bring her home too!

I am the proud person-pet to a Afghan (mix?) puppy!!! He's 4 months old, black over brindle, and from the Humane Society where I volunteer.  Since my greyhounds passed, I've really missed having the sighthound influence in the house.  When I saw him and made eye contact it was like everything was right again.  He's been here for two weeks and he's hysterically funny! Everything a sighthound puppy can be.  I am sooo fortunate!

My canine family consisted of an alpha male greyhound (9 - he crossed the Rainbow Bridge in May), alpha female grey (also 9), male great dane/lab (6),male rott/newf (5) and female great pyr/border collie (3).  I've also had several fosters over the years, and as long as I don't introduce a dominant dog.  Because my female grey has a very high prey drive I do not take in small dogs...just in case.  My greyhounds are more accepting of other greyhounds - they warm up to them quicker than other dog breeds.

Delila has found her forever home here.  This girl is so special, another volunteer (Gene) that she stole the heart from couldn't bear to think of her being put down (being returned for biting/nipping is a death sentence in this case) that he adopted her, placed an ad in the local paper, when I agreed to foster her.  I took several calls about her, but realized there was no one on earth except Gene and I (well, no one that was calling about her) seemed to take her special needs seriously, and the more I spoke with people, the more I realized that her intended place was with us.  End of a great beginning!  I take her to the humane society every week or so to visit Gene on his volunteer days. She starts bouncing around the van and vocalizing her pleasure at the impending visit!

Someday I'll get all my thoughts together and not have to post 3 times  Cheesy.  Delilah is a thief (she has stolen my heart) and the breed issue is more out of curiousity that anything else.  When all is said and done, She is a "Delila" dog and very treasured and loved for that above all else!

Oops - forgot the belly spots.  Yep, she has pink belly and spots.  Also spots on her skin under her coat (like my white greyhound)

She does have herding instincts....W hen she came to our home, she had been returned to the humane society twice for heal nipping strangers entering her new home (after ignored verbal warnings).  She no longer does this. She'd been turned into another shelter as a stray at 3 yoa, and we think she was on her own for awhile.  After 6 months in my home, with my dog pack, she will bark when she senses something out of the norm, but seems secure in the 'safety' of the pack. and has not shown any indication of nipping (although I assume she may revert if stressed).  Sounds like the Great Pyr/Border Collie is a good thought.  She is very layed back, and an independent thinker.  She also walks on very quiet, silent feet and occassionally seems to appear out of nowhere, with a smile on her face.  Oh, and no dew claws on the back, but since she was 3 when I met her, I don't know if she had dews originally.

The staff at the Humane Society I volunteer  with has suggested that my latest foster (now a permanent resident) may be a Great Pyr.  Her personality is certainly very similar to that described in the Big Dog Breed Book that the Humane Society uses, and they found a picture that looks alot like Delila.  This picture shows a dog with alot more color than I thought Grey Pyrs had, but then there is was!  Any thoughts or info on Great Pyrs with color patches?  We've been curious, because she definately presents with herding instincts, but her personality and behaviors don't match the smaller herding breeds.  She just meets the height requirement for bitches, but her build is a little slight, and she'll never be more that 65 pounds.

We have 4 dogs at the moment - 5 until May when our Alpha crossed the Rainbow Bridge, and have had as many as 6 with occassional foster.  I think it really depends on the mix of dogs....the 5 'residents' did just fine, but they're very low key dogs (insert couch potatoes).  If the foster dog was a high energy dog or a young dog, it seemed like there were dogs everywhere!

I'm new to the Big Paws Only site.  I have 4 furbabies with Big Paws, and the occassional foster from the local Humane Society. I've attached pictures (Sam Newf/Rott; Delilah Huh; Panda Smiling Greyhound; Buck Dane/Lab)..the biped is my 12 year old son - Alanna, Oregon

WOOHOO!!! I thought I had the only Newfie cross that didn't like water!  I keep a child's pool (originally for my greyhounds) and thought Sam (Newf/Rott) would be in it all the time - but NO!! If his toys happen to fall in the pool, he'll bark (and bark and bark) until some kind soul rescue the toy from the water.  He refuses to place a toe into the water!

BTW, I'm Alanna - new to the site....I have a 9 yo female greyhound; 4 yo Male Newf/Rott; 5 yo Great Dane/Lab; and 3 yo female ??.  I volunteer w/the local humane society, and she had been returned twice for heel nipping at strangers, so I agreed to foster her (right!).  She may be a Great Pyr (we found a picture in a dog ref book that looks just like her) but her coloring (mostly white) is pretty dark.  Anyway, very glad to have found this site!  I love the big dogs!
