cuz I think Nikki has it... man.. she's just like.. the chronically sick kid you always fear...

of course, it really started last Friday or so (whooping hair-ball-gaggin' coughs), and then she was due for her second round of vac's on Sunday, which included nasal bordetella, which i THINK made her kennel cough even worse...

so now we're off to get some Robotussin DM.. ugh..   :-\

Link here to NPR.org's story
a synopsis here:
The New York Stock Exchange has postponed its planned listing of Life Sciences Research without explanation. The biomedical research firm says its finances are in order, but that animal rights groups are putting pressure on the NYSE.

Medical Conditions & Diseases / hairy p00p?
« on: September 26, 2005, 12:29:19 am »
i know this is lil too picturesque but... Cody is a golden, and hence, a shedder... His discharge always looked a bit .. woolly and i took this as normal...

when Nikki first came to us, she didn't exhibit the wooly poopy symptom. now, a month later, her fecal matter is also beginning to look a lil hairy. i understand dog hair's also keratinized proteins (keratin) and the disulfide bonds can't be broken down by stomach acids, etc. i know dog hair can cause constipation, but Cody has never had a problem w/ the hair issue. but every lil change in the St. Bernard puppy makes me nervous so i'd figure i'd get the general consensus on this matter.

(and yes, i know grooming, constant bushing, Swifter'ing my hardwood floors 6x a day can help alleviate this, but you know... it is what it right now..  ::)  )

** she has refused to eat in almost 36 hrs (canidae, natural balance canned, peanut butter)

** last nite, 2 hrs after feeding her the de-worming pill, nikki (7 months) hurled up the horse pills + the amoxycilin + the anti-diarrheal meds from earlier in the nite. possibly overmedicated on empty stomach?

** this morn, she woke up thirsty, drank ~3 qts of water, threw up clear water 30 minutes later.

** vet recs no more water/food for 2 - 3 hrs, then feed 2 more amoxycilin caps + 1 anti-diarrheal tablet.

** vet recs if no improvement by today, off to the animal hospital for overnite observation

i'm friggin lost at work here... ditto the SO, neither of us can be home til 1pm... i hate to be a capitalist, but our budgetary constraints really prohibit an extended hospital stay. this MORBID feeling is beginning to shroud me...  :-[

finally found out nikki's diarrhea is a secondary symptom of hook worms. this new place we're moved to (complex of 20 apts) has 25% dog ownership. and as gentrified/yuppified as the residents may be (buncha IT/Ivy league types running around in Range Rovers/BMWs/Audis, etc.) apparently they're all owner-idiots.

there's more poop on the common areas than Parisian streets. When i get home tonite, i'm putting up signs notifying everyone to remove their own dogs' waste. another $100 at the vet today...  >:( >:( >:(

poor girl running around with wormies in her tummy for almost a week now

wow.. i just saw this today..

http://www.jsonline.com/news/state/sep05/353731.asp

apparently the race track's closing.. i was told by the local rescue group that there'll be '1000' or is it s'pose to 100? i dunno.. i think (or i HOPE i heard wrong)... 1 of the 10 yr old greyhound girls they had @ petco for adoption today was sooo soft and smart... she knew how to squeak toys - a big deal for me, as both of my dogs are squeak-retarded...

Saint Bernard General Discussions / no UTI (yay!) ripped off by Vet (boo!)
« on: September 14, 2005, 11:46:52 am »
* nikki is UTI-free. or whatever that means.
* after 2 days on the antidiarrhetic pills, her stool has firmed up.
* after a 1.5 days of fooling her w/ treats, she's stopped peeing right before my door (i'm an obedience training MASTER babeeee, or not...)

the vet sold us (i say 'us', cuz it wasn't ME) a 10# bag of friggin Hill's Precription for $20 advising the food will solidify the poop (yah RIGHT). the Person who took nikki to the vet forgot the cardinal rule of food buying: CHECK THE LOUSY LABEL for corn/soy/wheat. i was so ticked off when i read the label : #1 ingredient corn gluten meal... the Costco/Diamond food is only $25/bag for 40 friggin lbs. cest la vie...

now back to your regular: my-dog's-better-than-your-dog programming.

and look at this (the St. Bernie) shot:

pretty freakish looking to me...

PS: she's being taken to the vet as we speak (gastritis and secondary UTI combo.. o joy!)

so Nikki is coming up on 8 months old now. in the last month, she's had (1) new set of owners - us, and (2) new homes. in the last week, she's become completely un-housebroken. peeing randomly everywhere except our bedroom/bathroom and having diarrhea all over our living room yesterday (which, i know, in no way, is her fault because of possible gastritis)

i'm re-using Cody's crate for her, but she refuses to hold even 1 iota of a second after being let out of the crate, randomly peeing in the hallway of our apartment, in the walkway of our complex, as well as the carpeted stairways of our complex. this morning, i saw her peeing and walking at the same time once out of the complex.

we tried to use wee wee pads, but it just became oral entertainment for her. ATM, i'm at a COMPLETE loss. how do you retrain an 8 months old 'puppy'? any advice MUCH appreciated as i'm running out of Costco paper towels this week...

Saint Bernard General Discussions / nikki the DeStRoYeR
« on: September 06, 2005, 08:47:54 am »
this labour day weekend's damage report:
1 '62 austin mini cooper (an unfinished tamiya plastic car model which had taken me about 7 hrs to build so far)
1 pencil
1 CD
1 plant
1 roll of teepee
1 stack of post-its
1 toy rope

she only goes on the rampage when we're not around, so i had to keep her in the laundry room blocked by some boxes most of the weekend while we moved...

man, i really really HOPE she grows out of this (7 months old right now)

Saint Bernard General Discussions / peeing as a behavior problem?
« on: August 29, 2005, 09:04:55 am »
nikki's had 'accidents' everyday since we've had her. she's 7months going on 8. her PO told us she was housebroken & she NEVER has accidents.

she never pees in front of us. always surreptitiousl y. like.. when i turn my back for 10 minutes, or when we take the other dog for a walk. when does she pee? :

scenario 1) when both dogs are together alone, she never pees, even after 7/8 hrs.
scenario 2) this morn, she peed on the hardwood floor an hour after her morning walk, while we took the other dog out
scenario 3) yesterday, she peed while we were both facing the computer, and the other dog didn't wanna play with her.

I bought weewee pads over the weekend. no effect. we've scolded her the last 2 times right after we 'caught' her, but her submission mode lasts about 2 seconds...

wtf are we doing wrong? anyone w/ training advice much appreciated.
