Newfoundland Discussions / Websters 3 month check up
« on: October 21, 2005, 02:33:36 am »
Took Webster to the vet today... wow!  He has grown.  He was 15 pounds when we got him at 7 weeks, 18 pounds at 8 weeks, and weighed in today at 27 pounds! (he was 11 weeks this past Tuesday).  Reviewed food plan with vet and he approved.  Said the dog is just very large boned!  He did suggest we neuter him a 4 months.  Said it was easier on the dog.  I thought that sounded a bit early.  I thought 6 months was the "usual".  Vet also says we will take him off the large breed puppy food at 5 months, to ease up on the rapid growth.  Does this sound right?  I know I've read all different theories and he has been my VET for almost 20 years, it just seems so new again.  Anyway, Webster is outside, I am going to take some pictures...... I love being off on Fridays!!

Newfoundland Discussions / help please
« on: October 20, 2005, 02:41:58 pm »
Webster is 11 weeks old.  We are trying to crate train him and are about to give up. He wakes up about every 1-2 hours, goes out and wee's, then wants to be up for an hour.  3 weeks of little sleep is starting to wear thin.  We have tried:  keeping him awake for the last hours of the evening, witholding food and water after 7pm (occasional ice cube).  If we know he has done his business within the last hour, we have tried to just let him stay in the crate, but he yips, and he barks, and he scratches.  He can do this for hours.  We have tried "no".  We have tried treats and "good boy" if he quiets for a few minutes, we have tried the squirt in the face.  What else is there?  During the day he can stay in the crate for 3 hours with no probs.  Anyone else have a Nite Owl Newfie?

Newfoundland Discussions / Webster is growing fast!
« on: October 07, 2005, 10:57:37 pm »
It is amazing how fast a puppy can grow.  He eats all day, one day, sleeps all day the next, and then is visably bigger!  He does find time to run and play with big brother Riley, though Riley is sort of a grumpy old goat at times.

Newfoundland Discussions / Comparisons

It sounds like most of us have had truly wonderful, memorable dogs in the past.  My first newfie, Hightower, was what I thought the smartest dog in the world and as close to human as possible.  He helped me raise 4 children and was the light of all of our lives.  He lived to be just shy of 14 years and passed away about 4 years ago.  I now have a golden retriever, (3 yr/o) also smart as a whip and a joy to be around, but I just never got that same "feeling" as I had with Hightower.  Besides, he is definately my husbands dog.  Now, I have my little Webster.  I've just had him a week, and I don't know if it is b/c I am so much older or what, but this is an ACTIVE little sprite (when he is awake).  He yips and yaps and bites and has to be entertained to be kept out of trouble.  We are crate training....bu t he has to come out sometimes, and when he does, he is just into everything! Some of it cute, some not so cute.  I don't remember much activity when Hightower was a pup, of course that was 18 years ago.  Someone PLEASE tell me he will become a "gentle giant" at some point!  The good news is, he appears to be potty training very well.  0-1 accidents/day.

Newfoundland Discussions / Sleeping too much?
« on: September 27, 2005, 03:20:30 am »
Is it normal for newf pups to sleep 20 hours a day?  I remember with my first newf, Hightower, calling the vet twice in the first month I had him home about how much he was sleeping.... all was well.    That has been almost 18 years ago.  Now Webster is home, 8 weeks old, went to the vet yesterday for round two of shots and deworming, Vet said he would sleep a lot....but geeeeez.  He is up and playing hard for 30 minutes, then just flakes for 4 hours.  You can't hardly wake him up.  I pick him up to put him in his crate, he will open his eyes, but just has that "please just let me sleep" look.  Then up again, eat, poo, pee, play and within 30-45 minutes is back sound asleep!  (he was awake and very playful last night from 3:00-4:30am though!) Just like a newborn baby!  This is all okay?  Right?

Newfoundland Discussions / Webster is finally home!
« on: September 24, 2005, 04:37:31 am »
We finally got Webster home.  He is so cute.  Still a bit shy and sleeps like a baby, but he is a bit more boisterous each time he wakes up.  He made the 4 hour drive home like a champ and Riley (3 y/o golden) is quite keen on him already.  I had hoped for a gentle first meeting and it was perfect.  He is asleep now in his crate, will take pictures this evening.  Thankfully, I have the next 2 1/2 weeks off from work.  My goal is to get him potty trained by then.  Wish me luck!

Medical Conditions & Diseases / puppy food
« on: September 21, 2005, 03:01:23 pm »
I have always used ProPlan dog food.  I just got a 20 pound bag of the  ProPlan large breed puppy food, and now I have this niggling in the back of my brain that says maybe I am not supposed to use large breed puppy food for Newfies.  Has anyone ever heard of this, or am I just being paranoid or just remembering wrong.  (the latter happens a lot!) What do the rest of you Newfie folks feed your Newfs?

Newfoundland Discussions / how do you introduce a new puppy?
« on: September 20, 2005, 08:41:28 am »
We have Riley, a  3 y/o neutered golden retriever.  Wonderful, gorgeous and smart, but a wee bit spoiled.  I am getting Webster, an 8 wk old newf puppy this w/e.  Any suggestions on the introduction?  Riley has been around puppies and is pretty good with them as long as they leave his lips and feet alone. I am so hoping this will be a GOOD experience for all of us.  Thanks for your input.

Golden Retriever Discussions / bring home a new puppy
« on: September 20, 2005, 08:36:33 am »
We have a 3 1/2 year old goldie.  Wonderful dog, gorgeous, smart and well mannered and more than a wee bit spoiled.  This w/e we will be bringing home an 8 week old newfie puppy.  I'm not sure what to expect.  Riley has been around other puppies and is very good with them as long as they leave his feet and his lips alone, (and they go home at the end of the day).  Do goldies take to new additions pretty well/easily?

Newfoundland Discussions / puppy training rewards
« on: September 17, 2005, 11:46:34 am »

Next week I will have my 8week old newfie puppy with me.  Years ago we used hotdogs for training tidbits.  Seems that might cause some weight probs.  What do most of you like to use for rewards.  First training coming up of course is potty training, then the basics, sit stay, down etc.  I would like to have the right thing on hand.  Gee, I am like a first time mother, toys, crate, blankies, grooming supplies, etc.  It is so hard to wait this last week.....

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Undescended testicle
« on: September 16, 2005, 09:38:53 am »
I have a question.  I am to get a newfie puppy next week.  The breeder has informed me that at the 6 week vet check, he still had one undescended testicle.  Will this be a problem?  I do not plan to show him, in fact, he will be neutered.  Otherwise, he is perfectly healthy and quite true to type.  Just wondered if there were other probs associated with this.
