1  BPO Website Forum / Specific Website Information / Announcement - Possible Server / Website Outages « on: June 10, 2008, 03:04:38 PM » We're upgrading our server so we can utilize some of the newer software available. The first stage takes place over the next couple of days so if you see something strange, I'm likely the culprit. There may even be some down time. The second stage will occur later but should bring some new stuff!

We started taking him out with us on hikes at 6 months old and we've always let him explore at his own will and pace. I think most dogs, given the experience of freedom and personal choice, will learn there's less of a reason to run off as there is still an abundance to explore locally. Other dogs are different. I know my sisters dog has to be on a leash no matter what. I would practice a little. Wear them out as much as you can, to the point they're just spent, and then let them loose. They won't go far without the energy, they're Newfs! Education for everyone.

We're pretty sure that its arthritis so we need to keep his exercise to a gentle nature (although he needs more, he's gaining weight now). These backpacking trips can be long and arduous; sometimes up to 4 hrs. We try to pick times like this where there is plenty of water/snow throughout the hike so that he has ample opportunity to rest and cool down and this time he needed little hesitation to take breaks. Anyway, Jaime and I decided that this would be his last one as we don't want to hasten any future problems. We'll probably keep taking him up, but it will be more along the lines of driving within a mile of the destination so he doesn't get so sore.

He decides he won't follow us off a cliff and takes a safer, wetter route. The snow was a mixed blessing as it kept our drinks and fish cold, but we got really lost as it covered 40% of the trail. Bear leading the backpackers. As if he knows where he's going. One of Bear's many breaks. Considering going down the rock water slide? Finally we're here. First things first of course. Next, lets catch fish! Bear is shown here guarding the loot. Getting ready for dinner. Bear is calling it a day. Next morning, Bear is still tired. Where better to have a seat than in the water? Bear has been banished from leading the pack; he almost sprained his leg twice by falling through melting snow. So at this point, I kept him behind me so I could navigate his path. Finale - waterfalls!!

11  BPO General Forum / General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Re: Information on Newfies « on: November 12, 2006, 02:45:25 PM » Fur tumbleweeds! lolol.. Newflvr is right on all accounts. Newfoundlands shed all year, the only change is twice a year when they REALLY shed, and thats known as blowing coat. We had carpet at our last place and we broke 3 vacuums I believe. Now we live in a loft with concrete floors and sweep just about every day; it's all fur! Our Bear drools quite a bit, primarily when eating, drinking, or hot. Those times alone are enough to make some pretty uncomfortable, and then others love it. We've only had experience with one newf, but I can say anything over 80 degrees is starting to get warm for Bear. A wooden stove, he'll start panting and showing obvious discomfort. During the summers - the air conditioning is usually on full 24 hours a day. The winter, we warm the place just enough, or just let him out. If you can get past all of that, he or she will be the greatest companion. We will likely always have a newf around.
