hmmm.. I think I definitely need more pictures to make an accurate determination.

Also, it's possible the litter can have 2 daddies.

5  BPO Working Dog Forum / Big Dogs with Jobs / War Dogs - an excellent MSNBC article and an idea!
« on: March 29, 2009, 05:10:41 AM »

This is a great article on war dogs deployed to Iraq, the benefits they have on the soldiers and the war and also the noticeable affects it has on the dogs.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29941206//

It mentions in the article how one dog is pushing for a war dog memorial in Washington D.C. I think this is such a great idea. Maybe BPO could start a drive to help assist with this, or is it too political?

Just a thought. I'd love to find a way to get our name out there more and help a cause related to animals in a big way.

6  BPO Training Forum / Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Housebreaking regression - when good dogs go bad
« on: March 26, 2009, 11:22:08 AM »

For the last week, both Kentucky and Derby have been going to the bathroom in the apartment. This comes after months of no accidents at all.

It started when I found puddles in the living room two days in a row when I got up in the morning.

Then, one morning I took them out to go potty, went and took a shower and came out to find poop and pee in the living room. I wasn't sure who was doing it, but suspected 'Tucky because Derby has only done this two or three times since I've had him.

The other day Derby walked over to where I was sitting and, almost without breaking stride, peed right in front of me.

I borrowed a friend's steam cleaner and cleaned most of the carpets yesterday, thinking they were picking up on the residual smells and thinking it was OK to go in the house now. We've also been kenneling them at night again since they can't seem to wait until I get up.

'Tucky just pooed in the house again.

What can cause this behavioral regression? It's so frustrating. I don't think anything is medically wrong with them. Our schedule hasn't changed at all. Could it be the change of seasons? I'm out of ideas. Has anyone else experienced this?

7  BPO Gear Forum / Collars, crates, & other cool things / Our Favorite Toy - Video Proof
« on: March 24, 2009, 05:19:49 AM »

This is Kentucky and Derby's favorite toy. I can't remember what it's called, but it's a hard plastic tube that you put food or treats in. As they roll it, the treats fall out intermittently . They are obsessed with this toy - so much so that we have to hide it in the closet when it's empty or we want them to stop playing with it (especially Kentucky).

It's very durable and a great buy. However, it's extremely noisy. I can only imagine what the downstairs neighbors must think is going on as the roll it all over the apartment!

By his own gluttony!

Of course, like a good BPO mama, I had to take pictures before restoring his sight. And, this is supposed to be my GOOD dog!  Look for this picture to reappear soon in "Fun With Pictures" so get your captions ready!

11  BPO Training Forum / Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / I've run out of excuses
« on: March 10, 2009, 02:09:52 PM »

I love Kentucky, she makes me smile and can be very cuddly, but I don't know what else to do to keep her from pulling and lunging.

I've tried harnesses, gentle leaders, haltis, The Dog Whisperer's Illusion Leash, and the pinch collar.

I've tried "eh-eh" and touching her neck like Caesar does when she gets excited and starts pulling.

I've tried making her sit until she calms down before going forward again.

I always make sure she comes out and goes in the door behind me.

First, I attributed it to the fact that she was a puppy, then I excused her for being a hard-headed teenager, but the excuses are running out and so is my patience.

She is fine on the leash unless she sees or senses some other life form in the vicinity.

I need professional help! What more can I do??

I live in San Antonio with my 2 lab mixes and the dog parks ALWAYS have dogs in them - even when it's almost too dark to see.

I've heard the longer hair on dogs keeps them cool when the breeze blows through it, but I'm not sold on that theory. I had a collie mix in south Louisiana and started shaving him in the summers. He hated me for the haircut, but was visibly more comfortable without the extra hair.

Welcome to the Texas BPOs!!

Some of you may remember that Derby came from my friend Tracy who was killed. Most likely, Derby witnessed it. After it happened Tracy's mom had Derby until I came to get him. She said for the first few weeks she had Derby, he would have night terrors - literally screaming in his sleep.

I have no other explanation other than, YES, they do dream. Derby still dreams a lot. He makes this "woo, woo, woo" noise now. I say he's dreaming about the three stooges.
