Food Discussion & Information / Re: how much to feed?

Thanks, Patrick.  We just got a pressure cooker for our anniversary (I think my in-laws are trying to tell me something!) and now I'm excited to try it out!

Thanks for the good advice.  Another question:  Like everyone else, I've always heard that chicken bones are very harmful to dogs.  But a friend of mine says her vet told her she could feed whole chicken, including the bones, as long as it has been cooked well.  Says the chicken skin helps coat the intestinal tract from being harmed by the bones.  Anyone else hear this?

Now that's funny!

Food Discussion & Information / how much to feed?
« on: June 29, 2009, 10:15:04 am »
I've started feeding my two lab/golden mixes boiled chicken and brown rice - the hot spot issues have disappeared, and their coats are so shiny and they seem to have renewed energy (they're almost 9 years).  Buddy was about 10 pounds overweight, due mostly to lack of exercise (he's had knee surgery 3 times and broke his leg after the last surgery!  Can't run around like he used to!) I haven't had him weighed again since starting the diet, but he looks like he's lost a few.  My concern is this:  am i not feeding them enough?  I feed about a cup and 1/2 rice plus one piece of chicken (either drumstick or thigh) for breakfast, then about 2-3 cups rice and 1 drumstick and 1 thigh for dinner. They go crazy - Jake actually spins around like a little ballerina!  They gobble it up so quickly and come back to me for more.  I don't know if they're still hungry or if they just love their new food!  Jake weighs about 85 pounds, Buddy is about 95.  Any advice?

My Golden/Lab is having this knee surgery tomorrow.  I'm nervous, even though I've done lots of research.  Can anyone give me some insight?

Thanks,
Amy and Buddy

Just read the whole thread -- God bless you for taking care of that sweet baby!  The before and after pictres are incredible. and seeing him so happy now breaks my heart just thinking about how scared and lost he must have been when he found you!  Sure wish I could take him, but I'll pray he finds a perfect home that will love him as well as you have!

I'll go at this another way - can any of you in the Inland Empire (california) recommend a good yet not too expensive surgeon who can perform an acl repair on my lab?  PLEASE!!!
Thanks.

Medical Conditions & Diseases / torn knee ligament
« on: September 29, 2006, 06:12:09 am »
Over the summer I came to you wise sages for help with a limping buddy.  The vet said beginning stages of hip dysplasia and a torn knee ligament.  Over the summer I tried crating him, giving him daily doses of msm/glucosamine/condroitin, fish oil, and vit. e.  (still doing that every day - can't hurt!)  He hasn't improved so I took him for a second opinion yesterday.  Definitely looking like the knee needs surgery.

I was given the name of a vet that is very reasonable, but want to know if anyone has heard anything about this person or has experience with her.  Would love your feedback.  The dr. is Wendy Rangel of Affordable Quality Veterinary in Beaumont, CA.

Thanks guys.

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Re: Help Kiah's licking her paw
« on: August 05, 2006, 08:29:10 am »
My Bear was licking his left paw raw, constantly. Sometimes he really got into it and chewed his pads as well. He also suffers almost constant ear infections in his left ear. To boost his immune system we started giving him a couple tablespoons of yogurt in his kibble at every meal. Although the ear is still a problem, his paw and paw pads are left alone.

I would definitely go to the vet, though, as you just never know the first time around.

Good luck - and please let us know what you find out.

Jennifer

Jennifer, I'm curious to know how you treat the ear infections?  My lab/golden mix Jake has them all the time.  I was keeping them clean and then when the infection would return I'd take him to the vet, start him on antibiotics, it would get better for a little while, then the infection would return and the whole cycle would start over again.  I started checking into some natural cures and I was given a remedy of "vitamins" - something for the immune system, something for fungus, and 1/4 teaspoon olive oil mixed together and dropped into his ear 3x a day.  Not helping at all!!!!  I don't want to be a bad mom and wait too long, but I just don't know what to do.  A friend said she cleans her dog's ears with listerine!  Sounds pretty harsh to me.  Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Amy

wow, thanks for the info.  Sorry your guy has to have another surgery.  Hopefully Buddy will be able to heal on his own - we go back to the vet next week to see how he's doing on the anti inflams.  Thanks for your help.

Medical Conditions & Diseases / vet's diagnosis
« on: August 04, 2006, 01:17:04 pm »
I took my dog Buddy to the vet last week - he has been limping on and off for about 4 weeks.  X-rays showed beginning stages of hip dysplasia and a torn ligament in his knee (both on the same leg.)  I have some experience with hip dysplasia, my chow had it - we opted for surgery for her.  Would like to know if anyone can give advice on the non-surgical approach to the hip dysplasia, (weight management, anti-inflammatory drugs, etc.)  Does this work?  And as far as the torn ligament goes, does that ever heal on it's own or will it need surgery also?  Thanks everyone!

I have a really scary story about metal choke collars.  When Buddy and Jake were puppies I had their choke collars on all the time.  One day they were wrestling and Jake got his front paw twisted in buddy's collar.  It was cutting off Buddy's air supply and he was starting to pass out.  I WAS FREAKING OUT!  while my husband ran downstairs to the garage to find something to try to cut the thing off, I stayed with the boys trying to keep them calm, but they were starting to freak out too.  All I could do was cry and pray!!  When my husband got back upstairs he just twisted Jake's paw a little and it loosened up and slipped out of the collar.  They were both o.k.  Our trainer said not only was it bad for Buddy, but Jake's leg could have been broken.  We were so fortunate it turned out o.k.  From that moment  on we only put those collars on when we go for walks.
